Oooops, I posted this on Marnault's thread since it's the same topic, and then read the thread "READ THIS BEFORE POSTING"....Sorry....Anyhoo here it is again as a new thread....

Hello to all,

I am new to the forum and relatively new to HOI in general. My friend has been exstoling its virtues for a couple of years and I finally got around to buying it when I saw the Doomsday edition released, and just in the last month got around to playing it...AND I LOVE IT!!!!

However, I am having the same crashing to desktop problem as Marnault, and that is a real bummer . I have only played as the Germans thus far, and only the 1936 scenario. But it bumps me out on a seemingly random basis. Sometimes it's when I try to coup a nation, sometimes its when I press the pause button, sometimes when toggling between screens, (mapmode, production, diplomacy...etc) but there does not seem to be a rhyme or reason to it. Is it just as simple as a hardware problem?

Here are my basic system specs.....

Win ME
Pentium 4 2.26 GHz
Direct X 9.0
512 MB RAM
Sound Blaster Live!
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX400 64mb

Do you need all the stuff from the dxdiag file? I can post it all if you need it....

Thanks for any help rendered....

Yeah, we actually do :)

OK...it's a bunch of stuff, but here it is...

Your graphic drivers are old, see here for the newest.

Your sound card drivers is also old.

Do you have the latest updates to WinMe?

Set colour depth to 16 bit.

Rename avi folder to avi.old

Check for newer drivers to your motherboard.

Assuming you had nothing else running when producing the dxdiag report, I find it quite worrying you have 121 MB of your swap file in use on a 512 MB RAM system.

Please go into the BIOS setup, enter advanced chipset setup, and report back what is listed as AGP Aperture size.

Also, use your creative soundblaster tools and reduce the amount of memory used for midi sound banks. The driver, by default, allocates far, far more RAM than it actually uses to store the midi wave table sound banks that are loaded by default after installation. Reserving less RAM for this makes more available to applications and/or Windows.

When using Windows 9x (which includes Windows ME) on a 512 MB system without lots of applications running, typical swap file usage should be zero. As in: everything should fit in main RAM.

Thanks jpd,

I know my system is an antique, but it has worked well with my other games, but I guess it's time to update to the modern era. I will check for updated drivers and will take a look at my Bios. FYI, I do shut everything else down before I play, including McAfee. When I type Control-Alt Delete, nothing is listed as running except for Explorer, then I go into the game. Is it possible other stuff is running even though it does not show up? And if so, how do I shut it down? Or can I even do that?

I no longer have WinME running on my own system, but I do remember that the task manager comes with two tab pages. One for running processes (those things that have at least one window open on your desktop), and one for each individual thread that runs on the system.

That latter one should (typically) have between 16 and 20 threads listed on a system that does nothing more than showing a desktop.

Windows 9x (including ME) also has a nice optional tool to monitor system resources real time. Off the top op my head this little gem is called sysmon (or system monitor). It's not installed by default, so you may have to pull out your original CD to install it.

When you start it, you can select several entities to monitor. Of particular interest are total memory allocated, and locked physical memory. Also, the number of page faults per second is interesting. The higher this number, the more intense Windows is swapping memory to and from your swap file. And, unfortunately, Windows 9x can become unstable when this number gets above a certain value.

Locked physical memory is memory that is claimed and reserved by device drivers and installed hardware. The higher this number, the less memory Windows has to run your applications in, and the sooner it needs to overflow into the swap file.

Thanks jpd,

I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know all of this, especially with me being a newb to the forum and with so many others that need assistance as well. I will look for the sysmon as well as check my bios info, but thanks again.

I checked sysmon and here are the figures:

Locked Memory: 209.9 Mb

Not sure if this is needed but my allocated memory is:

420.1 Mb

Page Faults per second: between 0 and 30 (at least when I checked it- number goes up and down)

I also checked the AGP aperature size in my Bios:

It is 128 Mb
