Hello all, I installed CK 2 a week ago after buying it on steam, but instantly ran into a problem that makes the game unplayable. Whenever I start an ironman all is well for about a year or three, but then I get a pop up that says:

"Error writing save game" "Failed to save game for unknown reason. Are you using forbidden characters in the file name? Do you have enough free space?"

I naturally went to check my disk space, which has ample left (63 gb) and I never altered the original name of the savegame the game gave to it itself (Ironman_Holland). I tried changing it to (Ironman Holland) to see if the '_' was the problem, but it wasn't. I tried reïnstalling the game and it still persists. Also verified on steam and made sure it had the latest update. I tried looking it up online, but it seems there are no forums discussing this particular issue when ran on Windows 10. A lot of older threads point toward the issue being connected to saving to steam's cloud, but wether I tick or untick the box to save to the cloud, the pop-up occurs in either case. Other ones suggest that it'll sort itself out if you keep playing, but I went on for about 10 in game years still getting this pop-up twice every year. I have autosaves set to monthly, but also tried switching that up, without result.

Like I said, running an ironman is kind of impossible without using saves, so I hope somebody knows how to overcome this.

Thank you for your time,

Are there any non-Latin characters in the name of the directory the game is saving into? That's one thing I know that might cause it.

Ok wait, so the game is installed here D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II - but then there are no savefiles in that folder. They are over here? D:\Users\*username*\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\save games.

So no non-latin to my knowledge, does it matter that they got pulled apart like that? I am able to load the ones it does save before this error starts popping up

Niether does your *username* have any strange letters?

Test creating a txt file in the "save games" folder to see it´s not any limited write access(Which it can be also if you can create files there!)

No, the asterisks and "username" were just to not post my actual name, it's all regular alphabet normal name stuff.
I tried to add a txt and it's possible, I can name it, edit it and save again, so I don't think it's limited... How else would I be able to find out though if it still might be the case?

You are not on a 32 bit OS or a XP 64 bit, right ?
Neither are officially supported anymore..., as far as i know.

By the way, if you register your game, you get access to the tech support subforum.
You can also submit a request at the support page of zendesk directly.

Yes, I am, windows 10 - 32 bit. Ever since that update that automatically installed 32... I have zero experience in installing an operating system, formatting and partitioning disks and what not, so I've been putting it off for forever. But seeing that I do have an active windows license now, I should be able to upgrade it without more trouble than those that come with formatting the disk and losing whatever I don't back-up, right?

32 bit means you will have limited RAM in use for the game.
That's probably why.

I don't know how the license upgrade issue works. Haven't had a 32bit since i left XP behind.

I'll ping tech support... @AndrewT to comment.

Yes, I am, windows 10 - 32 bit.
There's exactly your problem.

Here's your workaround, assuming you have 3gb or more of physical memory installed:

1: Open Command Prompt
2: Set it to be in Admin mode http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947813(v=ws.10).aspx
3: Paste this in: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2560
4: Restart
5: If you ever need to undo: BCDEdit /deletevalue increaseuserva

You need to get on 64bit Windows ASAP; that does require a complete Windows re-install. You may need professional help for that.

Thank you very much for your swift advice to all of you. I implemented Andrew's workaround and so far it does seem to indeed solve the problem, however I've not had a bunch of time to play yet. Usually this error message would pop up after around 3 in-game years. I played for 10 today without seeing it. If there are no more posts after this one, anybody reading this may consider it solved.

Thanks again
