Hello all, I recently got Crusader Kings and.. well id like to know what to do.

Ive played a bit of a game as England, and I did have fun trying to take all the provinces in the UK area, it felt as if it was missing something.

What do I do other then take over enemy kingdoms?

What can I do to take other provinces without grabbing titles and destroying them?

Do the lords and ladies I have at my service do anything other then sit and wait for orders?

They are kind of weird questions, but I just kind of need to know what to do in the game other then conquer.

Inherit through marriage, spread your dynasty to other realms (I have a Carcassone game where my main line is Duke of Toulouse and I have a cadet line that's King of Spain. And I mean Spain, as in the previous dynasty conquered the whole peninsula), fight off civil wars... I guess that's a good start to a list.

crusading, expand your religion ; expand your culture ; expand your dynasty
try to begin as a little count or duke and success to become a king or a specific king title

What can I do to take other provinces without grabbing titles and destroying them?

try to inherit these lands it is much more random but so far satisfying

if you speak about your advisors :
your spymaster is the person you send for assassinations
your marshal leads one of your armies during war...here about "real" action.
through their competences the advisiors reinforce the power of your ruler in different ways. they also influence the educations of children in court (any children).
they also interfer in many events as modifiers or protagonist (for good or evil ! : f.e. an heretic chaplain may expand heresy in your demesne)

You can inherit other realms through marriage. But it is kinda difficult to pull off.

First off, the other realm needs to have semi-salic inheritance law (most AI nations do by default). Then you need to marry your ruler or a future heir to the oldest daughter of the ruler of that realm. Then that ruler cannot have any sons (ever). If he does get any male children, you might need to "take steps" to make sure they are not around (and neither are their male offspring) when the old ruler croaks.

Now if you married your son and heir to the daugther, they have to produce a male heir before the ruler dies. If that happens, then the son of your heir will inherit the realm. The male who marry the daughter will never inherit it. So in the example above, your grandson would inherit.

You might want to keep a close eye on the ruler's succession line, and make sure no males are in front of your grandson :)

It sounds complex ha ha.

Also ive played a game as Apulia now, I got a pretty good thing going other then my debt thats hit me because of previous wars, but then everyone starts betraying me and going independent, what do you do to stop that?

Another question, does any of the other nations crusade?

That probably is because your reputation is to bad, hover your mouse over the loyalty rating of your vassals, it will then give a breakdown of what is effecting it. If their monthly loyalty goes down then you need to improve your reputation, see the FAQ-section on that.

They can also break free because you are considered 'to far away' from them and you don't hold the kingtitle of that particular area (like f.e. Northern Africa or Palestine)

Another question, does any of the other nations crusade?

Yes, the AI can also go Crusading and sometimes they do that.

The annoying thing is when you crusade and take the Levant and Templar goons want you to just give them the damn land. Not as your vassal and unless the Muslims are crumbling, the dumb@sses lose the land in a few years. I just stopped giving it to them. One day I may search for the event and comment it out.

So, when you say "sometimes" does that mean that most countries wont actually honor a crusade and go to it?

No, I just say that sometimes they will go Crusading and sometimes not. Why the AI acts that way is unknown (though probably related to strength of the controller of the Crusade target)

So, the AI goes crusading but not 100% of the time

Another question, should I have a member of my court in control of every single territory I have? Or should i have 5 or 6 in control of my entire kingdom.

That depends, both options have there negative and positive sides.

- Many, small vassals makes it easier to crush a rebellion. But more vassals also means a higher risk of realm duress.
- A limited number of powerfull vassals make rebellions harder to crush, but makes it also easier to manage your realm and keep them happy.

When you are a king you only get monthly prestige from having dukes as vassals, having counts as vassals don't give you monthly prestige.

CK is a really open game, you can try all kinds of strategies and still have success.

Hmm alright cool.

Youve been a great help to me by the way ha ha, its hard to find video game forums that give such a good responses and have so little griefers, So far ive gotten all the help ive needed for every Paradox game i have gotten, good stuff.

Im sure ill have more questions in the very near future, but at this moment I dont have any I can think of, ill just edit this post with the questions when they come to me.

-Edit

Thought of some,

1. Are crusades every successful? Does anyone actually take the specific county or region and get rewarded with something?

2. I seem to see some of.. my vassals armies moving around on their own, ive even seen them pass through armies of my enemies, whats going on here? Am i seeing this wrong?

1) Yes Crusades can be successfull. When you conquer the Crusade target you get a piety and prestige.

2) If you are at war with someone, that doesn't automatically mean that your vassals are also at war with your enemy. So in this case it might be that your vassal is at war with someone else.
