CTD problem - Sent here from Bugs

*this is my origional post in the 1.03 thread about the CTD bug*

I seem to be having a more severe type of crash.

I CTD at random points in the game. I have yet to get into the 1500's in a game before a CTD, and as I continue it seems to happen more often (As the years progress). Sometimes I CTD and the resolution is not changed. At othertimes the CTD causes a resolution change. An example of an event which causes the CTD is the annexation of Hungary by Austria. I remember this specificially because it was in my most recent game. Upon choosing to annex Hungary I CTD'd and my resolution had been changed.

I have a 900 mhz dell inspiron 8000
(GeForce 2GO/Direct X 8)

Do you need anymore information?

I was told to provide information about my memory. I have 256 megs of ram. 32 mb video memory on the GeForce2GO.
Is there anything else that you need to know?

Oh, yes. I also read the before you post thread. It's windows ME. My CD drive is a Sony 700E - CDRW. Direct X tests all passed, and I'm running 1.03. I do not remember having this problem before installing the patch. There was the possibility that I was going to review this game, but I'm not sure how I can do that if I can't play it past 1500, but I guess I'll just have to pass it on to someone else to review. :-/

Oh, just thought of this

I went from 1.0 to 1.03 with the 1.0 -> 1.03 patch. Perhaps this matters, though it seems that should be - if anything - more stable than going to 1.02 in between.

Do you have Direct X 8.1 installed? I had a lot of problems with WinME and DX8.1.

In the sticky thread "Useful tools", there is a link to some tools called "DirectX Buster" and "Nvidia Detonator Destroyer".

Download and use both.

First, the DirectX tool and reinstall DX 8.0a (available on this site).

Then, go for Det. Destr. and follow the instructions to remove your Nvidia drivers and install the latest ones.

Followup

Having gone through all those steps the game is significantly more stable. I have now experienced only 2 CTDs in the game this week, and only 1 changed the screen resolution. Both were still at random points in the game - but 2 is significantly better than what I was getting before - now I've been able to make it to the 1600's =)

Further Followup

I am installing 1.04 now. I will let you know if any further problems crop up.

Hopefully:
- A rare CTD when countries get annexed was fixed.
- Another rare CTD was hunted down and fixed.

the second of those fixes my random CTDs and the first fixes the previous annexation problems
