CTD With new pope, same controller

I browsed the buglist, and though I found a mention in another thread, it didn't seem to have it's own. If it does, I apologize for adding to the confusion.

I'm playing as Kingdom of Naples (started as Duke of Apulia) in the 1066. At some point I was elected papal controller, and have then used this to my advantage a few times. Now the pope dies and another is elected, and I am again the controller. But here the game crashes every time (first four at least). A few times I have only just seen the messages, whilst at least once the papal realm changed colour to blue (on the realm map), and when I clicked the papal shield it crashed. I´ve been at war at least three of the times it has happened if that makes any difference?

I've investigated the incident further myself, and it seems that it might be linked to the entire "dead pope" issue.

I managed to drop my piety low enough before the old pope died so I wasn't the new controller. Whether due to this or just luck I managed to save the game before it CTD. When I reloaded the papal realm had indeed turned blue (except for one province, get back to that shortly) and though the new Bishop of Rome indeed had the title of pope (he was the one elected) and the "kingdom" picture frame, the papal shield was not displayed on the map, but instead something else (Bishop of Romes shield?). The old popes second demesne province was still red, and had the papal shield, and the old (and very dead) pope as ruler. Then it CTD again
