Well I finally got a chance to try out EIC tonight, and so far I've been having lots of fun, but something FUBAR has just jerked me out of my "happy gameplay trance". I had 3 frigates (and a maxed out combat admiral) intercept a fleet of 3 flutes, as everyone knows flutes are terrible in combat, so not wanting to wait on loading times I hit "autoresolve". All 3 of my frigates were sunk.

Now I know in every game with a choice of autoresolve or manual control you'll get better results with manually fighting your battles, but there's no way, no way at all, that I should have lost this battle. These were my first, and only so far, 3 frigates and I'm at war with 2 companys so this is a major blow to me at the moment.

Was this a freak occurence, or does autoresolve do this a lot? What exactly does autoresolve base its outcomes on?

Must have been their experience. There are other disadvantages in autoresolve as well, see here:

Perhaps a change is required to autoresolve. I would suggest that experience and morale improvements be added to autoresolve to help in gameplay, just like in EU3, Empire total war, Rome Total War, etc. This way experience would be gained in autoresolve just like in real life.
