I installed Rome on my new comp, win7 ultimate 64 bit (the ultimate faildows) and at the moment I'm getting rather pissed off.. Whenever I start the game it just shows an error "d3dx9_41.dll is missing, reinstalling the program may help."

I just can't stop loving how windows lies to itself, reinstalling anything doesn't give me .dll files, downloading .dll files might help. So that's what I did, downloaded the required missing file and put it into right place. Still not working. Okay, let's believe in this crapdows, reinstall the game as it doesn't take a long time.
Let's test: "d3dx9_41.dll is missing, reinstalling the program may help."

Unfortunately dropping computer down from the balcony rather rarely helps so I'm not very soon going to do it (especially as I bought this comp 2 weeks ago) but is there something that might help?

And yes, it might be appropriate to post into tech support but as this whole Rome subforum isn't very active I guess I'd be still waiting for an answer at christmas if I post this to tech support..

I did the same thing. I have WIN7 Pro and I tried downloading the right .dll files and putting them in the right folder. Still didn't help, so I ended up installing DirectX 9.0c. Even though WIN7 Pro comes with DirectX11 already, I still had to install 9.0c to get the right files. I guess they are old files and don't come with DX11? Not sure but it worked for me. Give it a try. Good luck :)

See the top sticky thread in this forum. Just getting the dll itself is not enough, you need to install the entirety of the very latest DX 9.0c version from MS.

As someone said in the sticky about this, it only happens with patched vae victis, after dozens of reinstallations I didn't patch the game and it works well enough for me, only thing that bothers me is half of the custom decisions in my mod doesn't work and mass army of heavy infantry is totally invincible, nothing stops Romans as they bring 20 000 heavy infantry men on your face, they just go and destroy everything on their way.

Well, after losing 50 cavalry units and some archers to 13 heavy infantries I decided to patch the game. And here I am at the beginning, nothing works.

I will try downloading the DX9 and see if it helps, hopefully I'm not doomed to play this unpatched forever even if it's a lot more comfortable without cascading alliances..

EDIT: Works nicely now, thanks for help :)
