I'm playing IGC 2.3 (EU 1.09) and have noticed that Dai Vet has been setting up trading posts and colonies in Siberia (circa 1560). Unless I am greatly mistaken, Dai Vet doesn't get any colonial dynamism from traders.csv or colonists.csv, so where are they coming from? Actually, how did they even get the maps? Not from me, and no one else has been to Siberia that I know of to trade them. Ayuttaya also has a couple of trading posts in SE Asia, does anyone know if they start out with these?

That is a very strange and rare thing indeed. I've never seen or heard anything like it. They probably got maps from Russia (by way of a second party no doubt) and the ai decided the to colonize north.

I'd call this an IGC bug. But there's not much you can do about it. Not much the IGC guys will do either, seeing that everyone is currently focused on EU II. However, you could mention this in the scenario forum.

All right, if they do get colonial dynamism, do you know which abbreviation in the colony/traders.csv file stands for Dai Vet? Or is there another way to get settlers (non-randomly)?

Actually, my guess is that they got the maps from the Portuguese who would have had contact with Dai Vet and whose ships have been loitering around Siberia. I've been in Siberia for over 50 years, and the first Russian explorer to Siberia (that famous Semen fellow, with all of 250 horse) just showed up. In any event, the Russians wouldn't have the sea maps for the Pacific. Here's a question then: if you have the map for a coastal province, but none of the sea zones around it, would you still be able to colonize it?

Answer to last question is yes. It's also a useful trick for exploring islands when you have Land Tech 11: Naval Tech 13 (but not 21) which I used in New Zealand/Australia. Let's assume you've discovered Macquarie. Then you build a colony there and you can send ships with troops there (there should be one route at least). The ships will automatically spot the land provinces in those sea areas that it sails through so you can also build colonies there or land troops. You can then use the troops to march through the rest of Australia allowing you to build a colony in each one even if you do not know the sea region. Once the colony is establish, you'll see the sea region open up.

I even think it may be possible to discover a whole series of islands (like Indonesia) in the same manner: Move ship to sea province bordering island to uncover island - build colony in island to uncover neigbouring sea provinces - move ships to new sea province to uncover more islands etc....

Thanks Coeur de Lion, now get back to work on your delightful Spanish AAR! I'm playing Spain too, and I'm curious to know how things are going for you.

They get maps from China, on the way to China's attempted diploannexations. If this happens early enough, it has some rather strange consequences..............

It's also happened in my last two or three games.:)
