Das Kaiserreich ! Imperial Germany and the Great War

ww1imperial-flag.jpg

The glorious German Empire was founded out of the various small German states led by Prussia under the Iron Chancellor Otto von Bismarck following the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71, the Chancellor's strategy of realpolitik had kept Germany at peace and prosperous in spite of Europe's other troubles and had also kept France isolated diplomatically...

...but Bismarck is long gone, as is the League of Three Emperors with Russia, while the Austro-Hungarian Empire, our allies, have never been truly unified and various ethnic tensions threaten to rip it apart from the inside out, France has found new allies in both Britain and Russia and has recovered greatly from the losses of the past and is bent on reacquiring what it has lost, Germany is on a unavoidable crash course with the Triple Entente of Britain, France and Russia thanks in no small part due to the diplomatic blunders of Kaiser Wilhelm II's 'New Course' which have damaged relations with many countries, not least of which was the United Kingdom, whose navy the Kaiser was trying to outclass thanks to his own appetite for a first-class navy capable of projecting German influence around the world.

For years the Austro-Hungarian's have wanted to put down Serbia if only to end their interference in their regions with large Serb populations, however Russia had promised to support Serbia in case of war with Austria-Hungary...

State of the Powderkeg: 1st May, 1910

The World is heading for destruction, can the Kaiserreich survive the coming apocalypse?

Table of Contents:

Hello, this is my second AAR here, this time I take the helm of Imperial Germany on the eve of the First World War, taking it on a Alternate Course (And ending the New Course) so as to it can weather the coming storm and come out as the dominant power on the world stage, at our enemies expense of course.

Rules:
No overtly Gamey stuff such as landing on Britain (Or at St. Petersburg or Washington D.C.) on the first day of the war with a massive invasion force to take them out almost-instantly.

Historical wargoals/no war before Franz Ferdinand is assassinated.

I do end up overstacking my fleets in a couple of naval sorties, though as they were Dreadnought/Battlecruiser vs NON-Dreadnought/Battlecruiser fleets (Anyone who has played this mod and/or done their history should know this well) it mattered little in the end (Speaking of fleets, naval warfare is probably my favorite aspect of HoI3, and if you haven't read my Revenge of the Dragon AAR where I turned Nationalist China into the naval power, I promise you there will be plenty of naval carnage and arms races :D)

Gameplay:
Manual control over everything (military, diplomacy, intelligence, politics, production)
Normal Difficulty.

Now, here is the basis for the 'Alternate Course' and a test at writing from a more personal perspective: Kaiser Wilhelm II with a slightly exaggerated accent (For the purpose of humor :p) but will largely stick to a similar writing style as my previous AAR (Mix of gameplay/narrative?)

Prologue: The Kaiser's Epiphany

"No, what am I seeing?! I see, Germany, poor and without an Empire, completely disarmed and no longer with me at ze helm!"

Bread Lines in the so-called Weimar Republic

"Now what is zis? Some Austrian rabblerouser leading a cult of goons on a foolhardy adventure which ends up destroying and dividing our sacred Germany! The crimes these monsters commit just might make me ashamed to be German..."

The Rabblerouser at his cult's gathering (Hopefully no Swastika's are visible)

"Now what?! This city,Dresden, what happened to it?! How could such destruction happen?!?"
Fotothek_df_ps_0000010_Blick_vom_Rathausturm.jpg

The ruins of Dresden, a foreshadowing of things to come?

"Nein! take me out of zis, zis nightmare! Nein..."

"...NEIN-"

"Mein Kaiser! Wake up!"

The Kaiser falls silent, realizing he had made a fool of himself yet again, the seemingly ordinary staff officer had been sent to wake the Kaiser up since he had overslept.

"Soldier"

"Sir!"

"What is ze date, today?"

"Today is the 1st of May, Year of our Lord Nineteen-hundred and ten, sir!"

"Then it's not too late"

"I'm afraid I don't follow, Mein Kaiser"

"No, I'm sure you don't, if I told anyone what I saw in my dreams I'm sure British tabloids would go crazy, much work is to be done, for my sake, your sake and your children's sake"

"Very good, Mein Kaiser"

"Damn straight it is! Now get me a report of ze current situation as soon as possible!"

"Sir!"

Das Kaiserreich ! Imperial Germany and the Great War

Part I - Fortnight

May 1910

The staff officer had compiled a report on the situation for the Kaiser

*Knock Knock*

"Come in"

"Sir"

"What is the state of our military research?"

"Here is the status of our research and development, your Majesty, our infantry, artillery and cavalry weapons designs are up-to-par even if not all our front-line units are equipped with them, as is our capital ship and escort ship research with new designs for dreadnoughts, battlecruisers, destroyers and light cruisers being developed as far ahead of time as is feasible, we are also being careful not to neglect our land doctrines either"
ma2LfDK.jpg

8sm5bzF.jpg
OFM7ars.jpg

"Hmm, zis should work very well for now, any news on the diplomatic front?

"As it is, we are the leader of the Central Powers and... with only us and the old and stagnant Austro-Hungarian Empire as members, this is partially addressed by our military alliance with the Kingdom of Italy even though their loyalty may waver if we don't fully bring them into our faction, not to fret though, many nations have started to align to us of their own accord, including Bulgaria and Japan!"

iLcAt1Z.jpg

"Correct me if i'm wrong, but ze upstart Japs also have dreadnoughts correct?

"Ja, not even France or Russia seem to even be interested in building any if our spies reports can be considered reliable, if relations can be patched up and our diplomats can pull them out of the United Kingdoms influence, they may forsake their alliance with them and join our cause, but we might have to give them concessions in the Pacific to secure their cooperation"

"That would be embarrassing, but I know Bismarck would do it in a heartbeat if it tipped ze scales in our favor..."

"Did you not force the resignation of the Iron Chancellor many years ago?"

"Of course I did you nimcompoop! But I may be ze real fool, since I'm regretting it now, but moping about it won't win Germany her spot in ze sun, I better check the state of the government and appoint/dismiss some ministers as necessary and maybe change our laws so we can build more with what time and resources we do have"

"I can understand the rationale behind most of these appointments, but reducing our laws like so will only weaken our armed forces and our military buildup!"

"Our army was consuming too much supplies as it was under ze Mixed Industry laws, and I reduced our training laws so as it compensate for that, there is no experience like battle experience after all."

"Very good, sir"

5w3G5Pg.jpg

"Now how about ze state of our production?"

"Here it is, 3 new capital ships along with a light cruiser and destroyer flotilla due to be commissioned over the new few months, we are also selling energy and metal to many other countries and buying rare materials from the United States, Italy and Russia."

lOrMnFm.jpg

"Zis is brilliant! Ze practical experience gain from those vessels will make building newer dreadnoughts and battlecruisers much quicker and less industry-consuming, order 7 new dreadnoughts when these are done, along with a few more light cruisers and destroyers."

"Very well, your Majesty, though I strongly suspect that the most we can manage is 4 with our current industrial capacity."

"Better see what our spies report on ze British."

rri0n8P.jpg

"Their newest ships will be ready later than ours, but they still hold a large numerical advantage over us in all ship types, it would be best to concentrate all our forces at home."

"It would be shameful to just abandon the colonial empire as such, but any British blockade would have to be broken first, or even impose a blockade of our own on their island nation."

July 1911

News breaks out of the crisis in Agadir following the deployment of the SMS Panther to support Morocco, the British and French immediately paint the Germans as the boogeyman in this, news eventually reaches the Kaiser, who immediately enacts War Economy laws and starts producing more forces for the coming storm.

MZofjaq.jpg

"War may have been averted for now, but time is running out, we must begin full-scale armament! Good thing our agents are also raising the threat of our enemies"

"We've just ordered 6 submarine flotillas of the U19 class to be produced, I also highly recommend we build several scout squadrons"

7iBUdSl.jpg

"We could be building 3 more dreadnoughts for the cost of those submarines, but the British seem to underestimate their potential so we could catch them off guard with this new weapon. But the scouts will be a low-priority project"

"Sir, I hear from many in the army that they have been completely neglected in favor of the navy, there's even rumors that Hindenburg may even be planning a coup."

"Ah, yes, we can't forget the army either, I think 15 divisions should make them happy for a while."

fVxKMIa.jpg

"Your Majesty, we are now in a position to continue production of our other dreadnoughts."

"No, for now we'll build 3 additional battlecruisers."

"I wouldn't rely of them if you're looking to build more capital ships than the British, their armor protection is lacking compared to true dreadnoughts..."

"They're still the next best thing and they can be used as high-speed commerce raiders or to hunt down damaged enemy fleets."

"This is true."

UFo9KhC.jpg

Interestingly enough, the British response has been muted thus far.

January 1912

War breaks out between Italy and the Ottoman Empire over the control of Libya, the Ottoman Empire requests lend lease from Germany but they are refused since it was hoped to bring both countries into the Central Powers (And we didn't want to alienate either one too much and force them into the T. Entente) Later that month new elections bring a change in the composition of the cabinet which is eventually switched around by the Kaiser.

Yr6LgMi.jpg

fmaEpdE.jpg

"Democracy? Nonsense, but I need to be careful of ze cult of Hindenburg nonetheless..."

March 1912

The Balkan League of Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro is formed inspired in part due to failing Ottoman fortunes despite the Italian stalemate in Libya. A few months later the French seize the remainder of independent Morocco.

xvb1YwQ.jpg

Hopefully the League doesn't attack while Italy is still at war lest the war expand..

July 1912

Even though better designs were already available, it was decided to continue building the 3 postponed Konig-class dreadnoughts as the previous 4 were nearing completion and they would in turn accelerate the progress on the Moltke-class battlecruisers, 4 destroyer flotillas were laid down a few months prior to this and the SMS Kolberg and our submarines were also almost ready to be commissioned.

zhJriZN.jpg

All England seems to be building in response are factories upon factories...

September-October 1912

The Kingdom of Italy and the Ottoman Empire have come to terms on September 1st, 1912, the ensuing white peace created by the Treaty of Lausanne comes as Serbia, Greece and Bulgaria begin to mobilize their reserves, with warfare breaking our in the Balkans on October 1st, the Turkish Armies initially putting up a valiant effort before the full weight of the Balkan League's forces are brought to bear on the Sick Man of Europe.

Towards the end of the month Italy is given entry into the Central Powers and efforts are devoted to bring Japan into the fold.

9cntqpB.jpg

The Triple Alliance is complete.

February 1913

On February 4th the Ottoman Empire accept's our invitation to join the Central Powers, thus transforming the Triple Alliance into the Quadruple Alliance, in light of this increased cooperation, all of our members get a boost in leadership and supply throughput.

ff9h9z4.jpg

Our power grows by the day and the Triple Entente knows it.

Das Kaiserreich ! Imperial Germany and the Great War

Part II - The Stage of Apocalypse

1913

Their alliance falling apart due to the division of war spoils, primarily over Macedonia, Bulgaria attacked their former allies Serbia and Greece on June 29th, after their initial offensive was contained the Romanian's and Ottoman's joined the war, eventually forcing the collapse of the Bulgarian war machine within a few weeks and the Treaty of Bucharest being signed, forcing them to cede territories to the coalition.

0kax7ii.jpg

mN5zhkD.jpg

Will the Balkans ever know peace?

The naval arms race continued to gather steam on the German side, 6 new battlecruisers of the Derfflinger-class were laid down in May of 1913, but it eventually became apparent that these would be the last capital ships to be completed in time for any future war since the resources devoted to the naval arms race are resources devoted away from the upgrading of the Imperial Armys increasingly-obsolescent equipment. It also was realized that our industrial laws had to be reverted back to Mixed Industry in order to speed up our armament programmes.

9fYNoyy.jpg

vPilMQi.jpg

"Von Tirpitz?"

"Your Majesty"

"We need more modern zerstörers to escort ze dreadnought-type ships and ensure they can cover their escape should ze British bring their numerical advantage to bear in any engagement."

"Very good, your Majesty, but I wouldn't worry too much about those silly Englishmen, they are only building factories and more factories from what our spies report."

AkVL4wi.jpg

t8cULdj.jpg

"Do you not know what zis means? Zis means that when zey do decide to start building more war materiel, they'll be able to build more than us by a large measure when war breaks out!"

"Even so, I'm confident that if we focus all our resources at home we can break the English Home Fleet"

"We can only hope"

July 1914

The Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand has been assassinated by a Serbian terrorist group known as the Black Hand, news hasn't broke out until July 4th in part due to a suspected cover-up, Austria-Hungary immediately sends an ultimatum to the Serbian government, whose response is still pending but will almost certainly result in war since that is Austro-Hungary's intention anyhow...

ArWWq43.jpg

"Zis a great shame, I had wanted to have tea with him one more time before he had to die, but ze hysterical Austro-Hungarians are massing on Serbia's borders and Russia has promised to support Serbia in case of war."

"Your Majesty, about the Russian Question, I have made arrangements with the Japanese to join our faction, though they have started pestering us about our concessions in China and the Central Pacific, arguing that they would be better defended under their control, those upstarts should feel honored we even invited them!"

"I know how you feel, but we left nothing to defend them with nor built enough convoys to go through the inevitable British blockade."

t5hqrY6.jpg

It is hoped that this would distract both Russian manpower and British dreadnoughts...

On July 16th, any hope for a peaceful resolution to the crisis evaporated when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, with Italy and Greece choosing not to support their respective allies while Germany offered a 'blank cheque' of support to the Austro-Hungarians, albeit reluctantly since it was realized that Germany was going to be attacked if she did not take action herself as Russia had started to mobilize, supposedly against Austria-Hungary but invariably directed against Germany anyhow.

JuO0xvo.jpg

"We are out of time, Bismarck's prophecy has come to pass, what is ze state of our armed forces?"

"Mein Kaiser, here is the state of the Imperial Army and that of our allies, our army is ze largest by far, but most of our equipment is antiquated at this point, especially as far as our artillery is concerned, but research is being continued on naval doctrines across the board and infantry weapons and doctrines, and as you directed the Western Front has the highest priority for upgrades since it is expected that it will be easier to break the Ivan menace between us and our expanded alliance and then focus on the Western Allies, it is expected that our allies for the most part are worse off than our enemies barring the Japanese with their small but modernized army."

NmauvR6.jpg

"Very well, we'll do what we can until we can train more troops, now about the Fronts..."

"Here you go, Mein Kaiser."

meauA6H.jpg

TdFLrCL.jpg

"Are we not to follow the Schlieffen Plan at all?"

"Nein, it would eventually backfire one way or another even if we tried to actually implement it, and we'll get bogged down with ze French anyway! sad to say, but you will not be home before the leaves have fallen from the trees, this will be a long fight and many men from both sides will perish and that's not even mentioning all the aftereffects and indirect effects."

"As for going with Russia first, the corrupt, rotten and stagnant empire of Imperator Nikolai will be a easier house of cards to bring crashing down, their national unity has been reduced by our agents promoting anti-tsarist and pro-boshevik propaganda and supporting riots and unrest throughout their Empire"

" *Gulp* Very well, Mein Kaiser, may we win our spot in the sun!"

"It will be a hard fought war, but if we play our cards right we can secure our victory while avoiding a second, even more horrible war ,Von Tirpitz!"

"Your Majesty"

"Ze status of ze navy, stat!"

"One second, your Majesty"
hmvIhKz.jpg

"This is our best force, commanded by Grand Admiral Hipper consisting of all our dreadnought-type capital ships and 3 of our fastest armored cruisers,as for the rest of the Hochseeflotte..."
xVcKduk.jpg

"It should be noted that thanks to new industrial technology upgrades, 3 of the new Derfflinger battle-cruisers will be ready in time for war with the remaining 3 scheduled for October."
rt4cbpq.jpg

"Very good, we might have a chance, though I'm questioning the naming schemes of the new ships, for start I'll redub this '1st BC' the SMS Gneisenhorst!"

"A portmanteau of Scharnhorst of Gneisenau?! Have you gone mad, your Majesty?!"

"Silence! I understand the potential insult you may feel aswell as those who sail those ships, but I feel it will be a good propaganda weapon against the Entente..."

"Very well, but I still don't agree with this.."
yVrgVEc.jpg

"To hell with the histories!"

Germany finally starts to mobilize on July 21st, in response to Russian mobilization, France starts to mobilize in support of Russia, meanwhile the Austro-Hungarian armies have made limited headway in Serbia proper, they are moving their forces from other borders to support the invasion.
ywRtUub.jpg

Countdown to Apocalypse starts now.

On July 31st, 6 submarine flotillas and Admiral Scheer's battle-cruiser raiding squadron make a break for the convoy routes to Britain and France, hoping to destroy some convoys before the can respond properly (And maybe send Scheer to hunt down any inferior enemy forces if the chances are favorable)
J0OJPIU.jpg

The Allies will be caught by surprise by this powerful form of warfare.

Eventually, on August 1st it was decided to put the Schlieffen plan into action... on paper at least, since it was hoped to catch the French off guard at their own borders in spite of various fortifications, but the decision was reluctantly made to attack Belgium even though we hadn't the forces to take it and occupy it sufficiently at this moment...

x567Hp3.jpg

And so the end of the old world begins...

Next Part - Schleifenkrieg

Oh I do love me a good Hochseeflotte, this shapes up to be an interesting war indeed! So you intend to go for France first? Lets hope they won't dig in too hard at the Marne then ^^

With the way my armies are focused (More men in the east) I'm expecting that I'll have to take out Russia first before I can bring all my forces to bear on the French and eventually invade the British Isles (After I do a number on their fleet first, or get sunk trying!) The Western Front doesn't go anything like OTL, but not necessarily in a good way... (Not to spoil too much)

Maybe it's the 12-year old in me talking, but I cannot stop thinking about how Derfflinger sounds way too close to "turdflinger."

Maybe it's the 12-year old in me talking, but I cannot stop thinking about how Derfflinger sounds way too close to "turdflinger."

haha, I looked it up and its a 30-Year-War era Prussian field marshal, fighting for the Swedes and Saxon armies, and he drove teh Swedes from Brandenburg 20 years later.
If wiki is correct^^

Maybe it's the 12-year old in me talking, but I cannot stop thinking about how Derfflinger sounds way too close to "turdflinger."
We all have that 12-year old inside of all of us, I think :p Sebas pretty much nailed it on the head, though I might add he did love his Schnapps (Not that it ever stopped him from being a field marshal, or having a battlecruiser named after him...)
