I knew that AI could not go into negative gold, but I didn't really realize how much of an exploit this could be until the other day. I was DoWed by a duke of 4 German counties, who had 3 times as many troops as me flying towards my kingdom. I look at his ruler and he is at 0 during the entire war, with no penalties except not being able to build buildings. I am sure the upkeep for this army was somewhere in the -300's or higher.

Couldn't there have been a better way to do this?

Apparently not, at least in CK1. Maybe Johan has figured out a better scheme for CK2, but we'll have to wait a couple of months to find out.

If you have enough space and time you may be able to wait out your opponent and let his armies wither from attrition. You can fight defensively in your own territory at zero maintenance most of the time. Admittedly, if you're small and your opponent is big, you'll probably be in a lot of trouble.

The AI is no longer immune from going into the red in CK2 according to the developers.
