playing rogue servitor. determined exterminator neighbour declares war, gets wrecked. can't claim their systems cause there is no need to claim when it comes to existential threats. but when they decided on a white peace, it gave me none of the systems i occupied, because i didn't claim them. i also couldn't change my policies mid-war to add claims. normally against a different enemy i could claim their systems in a defensive war even if i'm not allowed to claim if it wasn't a defensive war. so is this because i was on defensive policy? why did i get none of their systems? seems like a bug involving defensive wars and determined exterminators, as anyone else it would allow me to make claims on in a defensive war, even if on defensive policy.

It is worse than I thought! I removed my defensive war policy, and STILL could not take any exterminator systems in my next defensive war! I am not allowed to claim their systems because they are existential threats, but even a victorious peace does not give me any systems or colonies I took! What is going on?

If you occupie a system in a total war you take it imediatly, not in a eventual white peace. White peace in that case will only end the war, and nobody get any systems. Are there planets on those systems you didnt get? Note that to fully ocupie a system with a colonized planet you must also take the planet, not only the starbase. You can do it by making it surrender via orbital bombing or landing troops. So maybe you only took the starbase of those systems but not the planets? In that case its working correctly since you didnt fully ocupied the systems by not taking the planets.

no, it was three systems with no planet, and one system with a planet i fully occupied. NONE of the systems were given to me. none. 4 systems, and nothing at all. it seems it did not recognize it as a total war for some reason.

Looks like a bug with the total war casus belli then. Occupied systems should flip to you instantly as soon as you take them. Definitely worth a bug report.

It's DE and a different machine empire. Are you actually fighting with a total war casus belli at all?
i think they are trying to vassalize me, but even if it's not a total war, I SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO TAKE THEIR SYSTEMS in a defensive war. whether it's by claiming or otherwise. it's just locked me out of anything. does this mean that if i declare war on THEM, then I can declare total war and eat their systems as i go?

either way, even if THEY aren't doing total war on ME, then it should still let me act like it's total war and eat their systems. that would be the logical behaviour with exterminators, that should be their cost of going to war with me and losing the battles. since i'm not allowed to claim their systems, and i consider them an existential threat in game. and they're trying to vassalize me but losing, so i get to trim their wings.

upside is, they are never going to get a better chance. every war they declare will go worse for them from here, as i bloom and they wither, locked behind me in the appendix of this one of six spiral arms in a huge galaxy. i'm saving them as a later meal, when i can get an influx of new machine pops for pampering my biotrophies ;)

at least you've reassured me that i SHOULD be able to eat them if I declare war myself. will test later.

You should be allowed to claim their systems in such a scenario. But one-sided total war would be absurd: you'd take a system, and they would have to occupy it in return. It breaks the fundamental symmetry assumption that makes total war not janky/broken beyond belief.

they're an exterminator, they shouldn't try to vassalize me if they can't exterminate me ;)

but fine, let me claim their systems for the defensive discount at least. being locked out of claiming them because they're an exterminator who decided not to use total war this time is nonsense

Exterminators see other machines as normal empires. That part is WAI.

But, agreed, this would be much better behavior.
