King Gunnarr, House Skala

ZXs3PSa.png

(Historian’s note: The first of House Skala to begin the tradition of autobiographic diaries, the zealous and crusade-like Gunnarr thought of himself as an arm of the greater Damascusite faith, and focused most of his thoughts and energy on these matters.)

King Gunnarr, Part 1

"The Jihad King"

June, 936

Today, I understand my role in the world.

I have spent three months since the death of my father cementing my rule, but now it is time to look outwards. You see, we of Skala reside directly on the border separating the Eastlands from the Westlands – separating the Damascusite believers from the corrupt Jolanists. While our unique faith and culture still thrives in the Damascus Sea, our people have been largely contained for nearly two centuries now, ever since the old Caliphate broke apart. The greatest threat to our people comes from the zealot Mazandarian Empire, which sprawls without end.

Fuyl1Aj.png

TcoYYwR.png

But they are not my concern, for I now reign over the other border – that of the west.

Unlike the zealots to the east, the Jolanist followers are fractured – though a unifying pope far away collects their money, actual lords are bound to no code of honor, and nothing stops them from stabbing each other in the back at a moment’s notice.

This will be our strength.

A8ResQr.png

Nearly thirty years ago, the Jolanist King Iziaslov invaded from the Westlands, humiliating my father in a war that ended with their occupation of Abydos and the spreading of their corrupt faith onto our own lands. Things have changed though; their king grows old and Skala has grown in strength. It shall be my goal to first take back our lands, and help to revitalize our own people in the decades to come. As we are threatened in the East, we must gain strength elsewhere to revive the strength of the Caliphate age and ensure the defense of the Holy City Damascus.

E7nceJZ.png

I plan to assemble an army this autumn.

August

The damned Duchess Helena has forced us to delay the invasion by going to war with Duke Bersi to the south. That foolish woman has been our Crown’s most powerful subject for over seven years now, and yet she still finds reasons to feud with the others.

Z03gtnk.png

In the meantime, I have assembled the armies from my own domain to try and raid the infidels occupying Abydos – at the least, we can get a better sense of how strong they are.

September

I received word last week that Bersi is trying to rally the other vassals to his side – a fact that wouldn’t be surprising given his weak position in the war, were it not for the fact he had proposed a coalition to give my advisory council legal control over decisions in Skala.

I’m not completely surprised by this foolishness; his role as my Spymaster has been purely ceremonial, the only open position on the Council. His idea of intrigue is about as developed as that of a child, so he apparently decided to loudly come up with this scheme instead.

PK7VLYw.png

Though I’m not a fan of Helena – a woman whose only talent seems to be keeping her heart beating after 53 years, Bersi has pushed me onto her side. I sent for a courier to summon her here so I could appoint her a role as Musician (an important role for the Damascusite tradition), he came back today with word that she would have to delay her duties until after the war, for she had actually decided to don the battle helmet and "command" some of the soldiers herself.

MRHwh3o.png

Hopefully not too many, or she might actually find a way to lose her war.

October

The invasion is back on. Despite my own vassals’ distractions, the Anatolian Sultan (as he is colloquially known, given the impossible length of his official title) sent word he would support our invasion.

bEUtkKu.png

My own raiding army has already entered Abydos, but I have sent for them to return home and regroup with all the forces my remaining vassals can muster.

December

The army has been assembled, and Anatolia’s own army is just now entering our own borders to prepare the invasion. From what we know, Iziaslav’s army is equal in strength to my own – but alongside our allies, we will crush them.

hLj9qv5.png

June, 937.

Damn it all.

Rather than meeting up with the Anatolian army and attacking as a single force, the armies were split up and defeated one-by-one.

As our army waited for the Anatolians to arrive, we learned that the Duke of Samos, a vassal of mine, had fully committed his own forces to the war, apparently aiming to take the islands to the west for himself. However, his army was caught in Abydos, and our own nearby forces marched in to assist, assuming our combined numbers would defeat the Westerners early. Instead, the army arrived to find the Samos forces already routing, and despite having a slight advantage in numbers, our own army was defeated. None of the generals seems to be able to explain in any detail why the battle was lost, which almost certainly means their presence was the reason.

ijpThoJ.png

In the meantime, hearing of our plan, the Anatolians had sailed across the Strait to invade from the north. Our army moved to try and help them once Iziaslav attacked, but they were too far away.

Now we are marching East instead – apparently there is another smaller infidel army that somehow made its way into the middle of Duke Bersi’s land. Meanwhile, the nearly full strength army of Iziaslav moves into our own land.

YJbuf7u.png

January, 938

As it turns out, Iziaslav convinced armies from the entire neighboring region to join his war in protection of their heathen faith. As our army approached what had initially been reported as a force of about 1000 men, their numbers turned out to be triple that. Fortunately, my army was able to escape the region without being attacked.

HmxXJqT.png

It seems that Iziaslav has no heart for battle though – as we marched north and finally met up with the surviving Anatolian forces, the two main Jolanist forces did not attack us. The larger of the two was reported to be securing the surrounding territory near Abydos, while the other one had marched straight for the Anatolian Sultan’s court, which they now occupy. In a final effort to shift the balance, we have ferried forces across the strait to invade their northern city, and as I write this the larger enemy army marches towards us. Once we win this battle, we can secure a foothold in the Westlands and march towards Iziaslav’s own court.

79yqJ9C.png

April

The battle was a disaster.

Somehow again, the infidel managed to rout our superior army in battle, and we were driven back into Skala.

However, we were fortunately able to take advantage of Iziaslav’s meek nature and avoid any other damage as of yet. The enemy forces marched straight through our territory into Anatolia, where they are moving to force their Sultan to end the war in humiliation. Though this defeat stings, it could have ended much worse for us. In the meantime, I have sent my armies home – we must grow stronger if we are to fight the Westlanders.

ZQZfU2r.png

I have ordered the construction of some fortifications and such in important locations, to ensure our own lands stay free from invasion. Later, we shall begin expanding the army itself.

August

Bersi is dead.

After all the time and men wasted on the stupid war between Helena and him, his death of cancer ended the war without victory for either of them – being sonless, his lands now fall under my dominion by law. I imagine Helena will not be too happy about this, but the extra land and taxes will go a long way towards growing the army.

IPZ12N9.png

My wife has taken over his role as Spymaster as well, and she is trying to set up a network in the west to learn some of their secrets for the next war.

7zQVa9f.png

October

The expansion goes well, thanks to the extra funds. Forts and castle walls are being developed near the western border, along with my own capital. Any complaints Helena may have had about not gaining any of Bersi’s titles are currently drowned out by internal issues with her own vassals, who have raised up arms against her. Meanwhile, the fighting formally came to an end with the humiliation of the Anatolian Sultan.

lSgmhTW.png

December, 939

The expansion continues at a quicker pace than expected, thanks in part to the Grand Mayor of Skalanon, our great city located on the mouth of the Black Sea. The role that the two houses of Skalanon’s merchant republics plays in our realm is unique – they are masters of trade, both within the city itself and in several coastal outposts across the entire nation. Their skills have brought much wealth to us over the years.

DHqLzMh.png

Earlier this year, he got into conflict with the Infidels on the other side of the strait, and my own soldiers took advantage of the distraction to do some raiding in Abydos, where we managed to secure some good plunder before returning home – most interestingly, a strange chest that the blacksmiths have been unable to break open.

jmX8eMH.png

April, 944

It has now been six years since the war ended, and things have gone very well since then. The army has grown in size and strength by a fair amount, and my own power has expanded after banishing a minor Count who was caught scheming to seize the entire Kingdom.

Great effort has also been made to enhance our army this time around, studying foreign methods and developing our own. I am now confident we are ready to attack Iziaslav on our own and finally remove the heathens from the Eastlands.

(OOC Introduction)

Hello AARland, I’m back after my longer-than-desired hiatus following the completion of the gigantic Baltic Lightning grand campaign. My main idea even as I was writing that one towards the end was to create a more narrative and character-focused CK2 AAR to help develop my character writing skills and actually force myself to commit more to character roleplay in the game. After a failed attempt nearly a year ago, I was inspired by the Random World feature added since, which I’ve only now taken the time to explore – it satisfies my love for alternate history worldbuilding while also creating completely unique strategic situations that make the gameplay much more engaging. This playthrough in particular places the dynasty in a very important location, both in terms of its economic/strategic value and as the crossroads between two rival cultures. I’m very excited to see how this develops.

In terms of the game, I’m trying my best to match both my gameplay and writing to the specific traits and skills of each character, which (if I manage to actually accomplish) should make for varied characters and writing styles across the course of the story, as well as helping balance the gameplay long-term to avoid having a string of intelligent, benevolent leaders as often is the case with your behavior when playing CK2 normally. I’m quite inspired by many of the historical stories I’ve read of the various quirks and serious flaws of many dynastic rulers across many eras, and hope to create similar situations here.

I hope you enjoy this experiment, and please leave any questions or criticisms in the comments (or PMs, if you’re afraid of being rude/negative). The response to Baltic Lightning was extremely encouraging and I had a great time being challenged and forced to expand my lore by the questions, as well as considering the headcanons of the readers throughout the story.

(Also, I don’t consider some of the silly joke-symbols for some religions canon, nor the region/city names where not renamed, though I will refer to them as their map names in most cases)

It is so great to see you take up the "AAR keyboard" again, so to speak.

I've had some great fun exploring the Random world feature - though I get so sidetracked exploring the created worlds I barely play. Still, all counts as time well spent right? :D

It's fun to do, haha.

Also I was hoping you would be the first to christen this thread with a reply ;)

It's goof to see you back!

I've had a few casual random world runs, but I got bored of them after a bit of conquering. The potential of alternate history (more so than than vanilla) is pretty fun indeed. I just wish that when you randomized the world that the province names also randomized, but that's a lot of work on the devs parts. Still makes for ripe fantasy settings, and hopefully CK3 will have such features eventually. In any case, on the AAR side of things, this is throwing us into the thick of the action, with war and failed wars. Looks like our king is tenacious, so I doubt his enemies will hear the last of him ;).

Good to see you back! :)

huh not bad I tried a few random worlds myself with the fantastical kingdoms mod with after the end mod the does work you just have to ignore the check sum message......if you'd like I could send you the mod if ever feel like giving it a whirl

King Gunnarr, Part 2

"The Era of Jihad Reborn"

April, 945

The first year of campaigning has gone well – Abydos is now in our hands, and the ever-cowardly Iziaslav has refused to commit his army to battle yet. We will now march west.

Meanwhile, I have been dealing with the rumors that some of my vassals were conspiring for the crown – after confronting Helena directly, she agreed to avoid involvement with such schemes, which should neuter the threat of any armed revolt.

vxJ4qh0.png

July, 947

Somehow, my generals managed to lose a battle against yet another smaller infidel army after they were reinforced last year, ending our invasion early. This time, I decided to remove several of them from command, installing a new non-nobleman general named Ingemar who seems to show vastly more promise. Right now, Iziaslav’s army is finishing their recapture of Abydos, while we invade the north from Skalanon. I have been amassing a serious war chest in order to hire some mercenaries after this siege is completed, who shall help us to drive the Jolanist army out of our lands for good.

kACElfe.png

Fmt3EFw.png

April, 949

Finally, we have done it! Combining our army with a hired mercenary force gave General Ingemar the strength needed to defeat the enemy in open battle, where they were then driven back across the strait over the next year. Iziaslav rather suddenly decided to sue for peace as we advanced, surrendering our rightful lands!

t9JDfyW.png

NrZXiiZ.png

Though we initially suspected he was afraid of a counter-invasion deeper into his lands, it seems the internal arguments that have always plagued those corrupt heathens were responsible, as just weeks later half of the entire kingdom revolted against Iziaslav. This is what has always weakened them, and why we as a people will ultimately prevail: the Jolanists never lived under a central rule like our great Caliphate, and their weak Pope has never been capable of uniting his people – the office is simply a corrupt seat of ceremonial power that cares little of internal fighting among its own men.

AZ84hiO.png

The Damascusite people are different – we unite against a common foe with ease, we avoid destroying each other’s kingdoms, and we are completely devoted to our cause. With Abydos now free, we have room to breathe, and we shall be patient while our enemies destroy each other.

This confidence is increased tenfold by news from the East – it seems that the single greatest threat to our people as a whole, the Mazandarian Empire, is in the middle of complete collapse. It was learning of the sheer extent of their empire that first convinced me of my purpose as a King, and with its end now, we may indeed be living in the beginning of a new Damascusite age, where our people may dominate and thrive once again as they did under the Caliph 300 years ago.

jaNaGIt.png

May

Following our success, other Damascusite rulers have become more aggressive in their own pursuits. The Tayyurtid Sultan, steward of the Holy City itself, has been fighting to expand his control over the western Damascus Sea, while fighting continues between the Skalanon families and various Westlander armies.

Ru1pEuG.png

Meanwhile, I have been trying to deal with my vassal in Samos, who has been been working to convince Helena to support a claim to my own throne. Given that I have only managed to produce a single son, this is concerning close to being possible, so I decided instead to gather his support by granting him Abydos. We cannot afford to fight among ourselves as the Jolanists do, and despite his ambition I believe Alfgeir will be satisfied enough after this to focus on the true enemy.

pzAgdkR.png

July

Riding the wave of Jihad, the Anatolians have once again assembled their armies to march west, just as the rebellion against Iziaslav came to a conclusion. It has been under three months since the end of our last war, but both the army and our coffers are in great shape after the rather sudden conclusion to the last war, so I once again have ordered our men to assemble and join the fighting.

dJa1BCJ.png

As it turns out, Iziaslav was killed by one of his vassals, which now places the Radivic lands in the hands of his son.

X0Awa7F.png

September

It seems the Ancestors themselves are on our side – as we prepared our armies to march west, a terrible plague has spread through the west. Though it has begun to spread to our coastal provinces as well, it is mainly contained in the Westlands. An additional plague seems to be ravaging the Tayeia kingdom, which has been in conflict with other Jihad armies.

pxDSbYl.png

General Ingemar has determined that this is the perfect opportunity for us to invade – the enemy armies seems to be distracted elsewhere, and with the plague ravaging the Jolanist coastline, we will be able to besiege their cities much quicker. The army is now led by two great men as well, and as my only son Falki comes of age, I have been told his education in warfare has been extremely successful – the boy seems to have an incredible talent.

6fBr7LT.png

March, 950

I dare not send my only son into a plague-infested land, though he would make an excellent general. Instead, he has been placed in charge of military organization for the time being.

ZLD5OgV.png

June

The plague has spread disastrously fast, and now seems to enter the lands of the kings fighting the Jolanists. Nearly half of my own domain is infected, and travelers from Damascus and Anatolia carry similar news.

Even my poor wife has been infected with this cruel disease.

XQFdgWX.png

August

After working with my steward over the last year, a new barony has been constructed near my court for far less money than such projects often take.

After reflecting over my own writings, I’ve come to truly appreciate the power that a man’s will has when working alongside the Ancestors. Incredible things have been accomplished during my reign – the expansion of the army, general prosperity in our lands, and victory against the Jolanists. There is still much to be done, but with divine backing I shall work tirelessly to create a Great Kingdom.

loEYdz7.png

Unfortunately, the plague has been devastating our nation over the last year. I have commissioned a hospital in the court of Sardis to help our people as much as can be done.

(Historian’s Note: The great plague of 950 continued to spread, killing a tremendous number of people across the entire Damascus sea, Jolanist and Damascusite alike. It is likely that the holy wars contributed to the spread of these diseases, both as a result of the foreign travel and abysmal health conditions among armies of this era.

King Gunnarr’s journal was not updated beyond this point, though he continued to live until May of 951. The writings of his recently hired court physician Ingibjorg have given some insight into the period between this journal and his death, but her accounts were often contradictory and confused. What can be confirmed is that soon after the final journal, Gunnarr contracted Syphilis – at the time, this was considered an erroneous diagnosis, but later writings from his son seem to suggest his wife, who survived the Smallpox outbreak, had also contracted Syphilis. Regardless, Gunnarr was eventually diagnosed with Smallpox as well, and ultimately perished from the disease after a lengthy period of illness.

Nevertheless, this phase of the crusade continued under his son, Falki.)

Agreed on all counts :)

I don't envy the devs of CK3, it's gonna be hard to get people to move over any time soon given how extensive the amount of content in CK2 is, and how great it works. Perhaps it'll attract a lot of new players who were intimidated by the DLC mountain though.

Good to see you back! :)

Thanks :)

huh not bad I tried a few random worlds myself with the fantastical kingdoms mod with after the end mod the does work you just have to ignore the check sum message......if you'd like I could send you the mod if ever feel like giving it a whirl

Both look interesting, though I hardly even play CK2 often enough to even be tired of vanilla haha. One of the main ways I can convince myself to actually get into roleplay is doing these.

Sad that Gunarr seems to have had such a hard few last years with the sicknesses.

One can be victorious on the field, but there are other battles not so easily fought, alas for Gunarr.

Ambitious men seem to live rather short, but we can say his life ended better (in the sense of achievements) than when we were first introduced to him. Falki might be his Alexander.

Lovely writing as usual. The situation is indeed interesting. The one thing I find problematic when creating randomized world are ridiculous names of religions. But this is a great take on otherwise overused area of Anatolia.
Glad to be able to follow another of your AARs.

Hello everyone, apologies for the time it took for me to give this update.

Between migrating computers, a lack of motivation due to the quality of my unposted writing (and the delay between playing the game and writing that part), and finally personal distractions within my own life, I eventually decided to abandon this AAR.

However: I do still love the concept, and particularly as I've been inspired lately by learning all the fun details of the history of the Roman Empire, I want to give it another go using the same style and concept as this AAR. This time, I'll also do a tiny bit of savegame editing to help rationalize the names of the religions and countries around me, since several of them were hard to take seriously this time around and I had to do a lot of gymnastics with the names to make them reasonable compared to their de facto ones in-game.

So sometime in the coming month, I'll get started on another one like this, and I'll post here once it's available. Apologies for the disappointment and the delay in information, but I hope to get back on my feet soon and hope that the ends are satisfying :)

No worries and quite understandable. Will look forward to any future project that emerges :)

No worries, writing needs to be fun to be sustainable. :) Looking forward to whatever you do next.
