This is the official AAR for the DEG 3 multiplayer game. This is a 1939 campaign, with more or less historical alliances (Germany/Italy/Japan vs USSR/USA/UK). For more info please look at the DEG 3 thread.

I encourage all players to post a short AAR after each session, including pictures and screenshots is even nicer. If you want to host your photos somewhere I suggest using Imageshack, it's quick to use and it's free. Also keep in mind that you may need to censor parts of the photo that don't comply to the Paradox forum rules (no swastikas, no nudity, etc).

During the first session we played 2 months, ending at 1 November 1939. Italy has joined the Axis. Japan is not part of Axis and is waging war in China.

Sunken ships so far:
sunkenships18hy.jpg

The 4 German ships sunk are the ones that start way out in the Atlantic, their hopes of making are generally quite slim. Most of the Allied ships got sunk while the UK evacuated troops from Ghent. The Führer was most pleased at the loss of HMS Queen Elizabeth.

Once again Great Britain was at war!
Air and naval units were sent out to search for German raiders and soon enough 2 packs of uboots and 2 Heavy Cruisers, Graaf Spee and Deutchland were intercepted and sent to the bottom of the ocean.

An early assault on the Maginot line was barely repulsed and the Germans went north to take the way of 1914 instead. At least the forts along the border had saved us some time.

Polish forces repulsed two assualts on Warzaw but fell after the third and Poland was forced to capitulate after only 22 days of fighting.

Soon Germany declared war on Luxembourg and Belgium, both were quickly overrun. UK sent 9 divisions to try to stall the German invasion but was forced to evacuate from Ghent after hard battles. German uboots and air tried to prevent the embarkation and the Battleship Queen Elizbeth, a heavy and a light cruiser were sunk along with 2 Transport flotillas. A heavy loss! On the bright side a single Belgian Transport flotilla managed to save no less than 5 Belgian divisions now stationed at various British beaches, not being suitable for field service with their outdated equipment.

After some see-saw battles along the French Belgian frontier, where at one point General Guderian was encicled by General de Gaulle attacking with French armour, France is now on the defensive defending behind the riverline of Paris. Large German formations sent from the East managed to breal through the maginot line and are advancing in force towards the Italian border without the French being able to do much to stop them. The situation certainly looks bleak in France.

Before long the perfidious Italians joined it's senior member in the Axis and launched an invasion into Egypt. French submarines were sent to chase Italian convoys heading for Tripoli but for 2 months not a single one was found. Fearing a total collapse on the Western Front the French HQ ordered North Africa abandoned and sailed the forces stationed there home to France proper. Italy therefore speedily occupied Tunisia.

In Egypt the going showed tougher. After a failed assault at El-Alamein British forces went on the offensive and are currently pursuing the Italian invasion force towards the border. An army corps was landed outside Tobruk and soon overwhelmed the sleepy and lax garrison there. General Alexander, CiC middle East, now has established a forward HQ in this Italian strongpoint awaiting counterattacks from German reinforcements sent across the mediterranean.

In conclusion UK has lost a valuable ally in Poland and France seems unable to hold out for much longer, if not bad weather saves them throught the winter. Also naval losses have been unexpectedly high for only 2 months of fighting. On the bright side the first Italian invasion of Egypt failed and robbed of the moment of surprise it's hoped that the fluid situation in Africa can be fought to a standstill. Thank's to the allies brave struggle many Europan minor nations are still free from occupation so far.

On the 23rd of September 1939 Italy decided the time had come to expand their glorious nation by joining the Germans in their quest. Since Italy considers itself to be the leading nation in the Mediterranean, the first steps of expansion were taken around Mare Nostrum. It carries this name with a reason after all. Attacks mere made both into Tunesia and Egypt. The French in Tunesia decided they had better things to do, so hardly any opposition was met.

The British, however, decided to make a stand in El Alamein. The reckless Italian High Command tried to get some momentum going by attacking there. Unfortunately it didn't expect that their soldiers would be more occupied with their hair than with their British opponents and no breakthrough was achieved. The British ruthlessly capitalized on this mistake and the Italians are now running back to their mammas. The good news for them is they took their wax with them.

On another front Germany requested the assistance of Italian naval bombers when the BEF and the Belgian forces were being evacuated from Ghent. It looks like some of the doctrineless pilots managed to push the right button at the right time and a couple of ships were sunk.

The workers paradise of the Soviet Union stayed calm while the imperlistic powers in Europe fought. The brilliant military placement organized by Field Marshall Primakov allows the mighty red army to use very little supplies, while our factories work day and night for the glory of the union.

Latvia and Lithuania voted to join the Soviet brotherhood after Poland fell, while the capitalist oppressors in Estonia broke the peoples revolution where they cried out to join the international communist brotherhood.

The advances of the Wehrmacht 1 September 1939 - 1 November 1939:
Initial planning by the OKW had called for both a surprise assault against the Maginot line and a blitz to Warsaw. Due to bad weather and bad luck none of these operations succeeded, instead the "Plan B" was forced into action. Warsaw was instead surrounded and fell after fiere fighting, often block by block and street by street.

In the West our forces blitzed through Luxembourg and Belgium, reaching the English Channel and trapping parts of the Belgian Army and the BEF in Ghent. Due to ill fortune these forces were successfully evacuated by the Royal Navy, but at the cost of one battleship and two cruisers. The German forces also succeeded in a second assault against the Maginot, under the skillfull command of von Manstein. The Germans now hold a nice line along the Seine river and are posed to strike against Paris.

German soldiers recieve the Iron Cross after successfully fighting the French.

Says Hauptmann Horst "Lederhosen" Müller, Iron Cross 1st Class (far left): "Yaaa, zee Frensch fight like girly-men, but vatt can you expect from people zatt eat frogs instead of sauerkraut?"

Says Unterfeldwebel Fritz Schmidt (center): "Fighting zee Britisch Expeditionary Force vas never realy zatt hardt, mein grandmother fights better zenn zemm! Besides vee hear zatt zey all have very schmall penises!" (yes, as you can see from the photo the average German soldier is rather well hung).

Haha! Great AAR! And thoose guys got big penises

Well, the guys on the beach photo are tank crew, and as you know the smallest guys always get placed in the tank corp. If you call that big you should see the size of the Waffen SS! (sorry, Paradox rules don't permit showing pictures of this) :D

Diplomacy NEWS

Japan is declared official policy of neutrality toward European Conflict and Axis by promoting the fact that European events are not concerns of Emperor Hirohito and his government. All diplomatic talks about Japan joining axis in the near future have ended as Japan lack of interest.

Trade talks between USA and Japan have also have some set backs when Japan Trade Minister decided to turn down amount of supplies demanded from the raw material in USA offer of trade.

Japan is opening talks with Soviet Union about the deal where Japan claims under Soviet control could be returned to Japanese control.

War NEWS

On the Japan Nationalist China War

Japan troops advance is slowed down on the Nationalist China heavy resistance and counter attacks have forced Japan troops to lose some important territory on the Asia. This has forced Emperor Hirohito to call more reserves on service and be sending against Nationalist China. Heavy infantry based warfare on the rugged terrain is expected to continue at following months.

The start of the German campaign would be haunted by the failure of plan A, here the Führer can be seen explaining the Plan to the People, unfortunately there was ein Vorrater in the crowd, after this it was decided that future plans would be kept to a somewhat more limited group.

PlanA.jpg

Plan B involving the encirclement of Warsaw and a sweep through Belgium would see much greater success, here the Führer is explaining the fine details to the leader of the Hitlerjugend.

PlanB.gif

The french were falling surprisingly fast and there were much curiosity in the German high command about why the French forces were not getting reinforced, die Nadel one of the foremost German spies, provided the answer to the high command, the French had decided to finish their Battlesihps before concerning themselves with something as lowly as Land fighting.

With this in Mind the German High Command began making plans for the disposition of conquered French territories, the population would be put to the Sauerkraut it was decided. This would be the cause of much embitterment amongst the French and would later lead to the formation of ”French resisting the implementation of Sauerkraut to the west of Rhein”, after some consideration this organisation would later be renamed ”Le Resistance”.

German plans for Sauerkraut fast food

Leading the last push against the French during the winter was Heinz Guderian, nicknamed Schnelle Heinz, although if this was because of his war-time abilities or his low success rate with the opposite sex remained to be seen.

USA 1 sept- 1 nov 1939

Once again war broke out in Europe and the american public made it clear that this was not a war they wanted to get dragged into. However some preparations had to be made as shipping and commerce got increasingly difficult. Minor adjustments were made to the cabinet to clear the way for a more appropriate policy. The US trades with almost all the world except the Axis and Japan as they simply do not want to trade. This was considered a hostile move and the US harbours promptly sent out armadas of supplyships to the brits and chinese as a just diplomatic response. The US is watching the developments all over the world and shifts focus according to threatlevel. As of today the threatlevel seems to be neglible and of such low intensity that the brits look capable of handling the situation themselves.....for now.

Session 2: 1 nov 1939 - 29 February 1940

The expansion of the Axis powers continued with the fall of France, followed by Hungary and Bulgaria joining the Axis and the establishment of Vichy France, which after refusing to ally with Germany was quickly subdued. Nationalist Spain was overrun during the winter months, followed by Yugoslavia. Soviet forces annexed Finland. Portugal and Greece are currently under attack by Axis forces. The nations of Flanders and Croatia recieved independence from Germany.

German winter campaign 1939/1940:

After the total collapse of French resistance and the destruction of the traitors of the so called "Vichy France" the eyes of the Führer turned to the Iberian peninsula and the Balkans. With the help of our new Allies in Hungary and Bulgaria, the pathetic kingdom of Yugoslavia was utterly crushed, and the spoils divided between 5 different nations: Italy reieved the coastline with it's long-awaited influx of steel, Hungary recieved Novi Sad and the neighboring province, and Croatia was given independence in a small part. Bulgaria recieved some worthless mountains, something they were greatly pleased with (yes, when one already has mainly worthless mountains and an 19-century army one is content with very little). The remainder went to Germany, to fuel our ever increasing Wehrmacht.

Spain was easily overrun, despite bad weather and severe fighting in the city of Madrid. Portugal and Greece are being assaulted as we speak.

Also the nation of Flanders was granted independence, having long suffered under Belgian and French oppression. The kind and peace-loving people of Flanders are now contributing much more to the greater good of the Reich, and have even started producing a small army. Berlin is most pleased.

The Führer showing his funnier sides at the Nuremberg rally. Unfortunately not many in the audience realized that this was in fact the funniest joke ever told in the Reich.

Many great generals have contributed to the success of our campaigns, and here are a few of the most noteworthy:

Mj General Ringel captures Suez in a daring paradrop!
units13tf.jpg

General Guderian and his mighty combined arms force, the legendary Kampfgruppe Guderian.
units22xe.jpg

Though given only a small command, Lt General Paulus has successfully defended the German-occupied France against hordes of enemy assaults on the beaches of Normandy. These two divisions have alone destroyed or captured well over 100,000 British troops, and destroyed over 250 tanks and self-propelled guns, as well as a full Gurkha Regiment [note: some parts of this text have been slightly altered to better suit the needs of the Ministry of Propaganda, but these parts are only minor details]
units36zz.jpg

The Minister of Armaments is very pleased to inform that many so called "neutral" nations still trade scarse resources like oil, steel and other rare materials with the Reich. In return they recieve small amounts of high-grade German coal, the finest in the world. Hey stop that! What do you mean with "you guys are ripping these poor suckers off!"?? It's a fair trade! It's not like we are forcing them to trade with us you know! Well, OK, we are actually forcing them, but that's because we can force them. If you were in our situation you would do it too. Admit it, you guys are just jelous! :)

The goodlooking Italians started this session on the run for the British in North Africa. Unfortunately the damage was already done and 3 armoured and 2 motorized divisions were encircled and captured. Poor guys, no more pasta for the rest of the war. Both the Italian and German High Commands had already realised that Italy would need German assistance to help them becoming the leading power in the Mediterranean. Von Kluge's Afrika Korps came to the rescue and at least the front was stabilized with unfortunately the British holding Tobruk. While the Germans raged around Europe this front stayed in place, despite attempts to move it.

In the meantime the Italians restored some of their pride by helping the Germans in their conquest of powerful Yugoslavia and by occupying a small part of Southern France. Well...at least the pictures in the newspaper looked impressive. As a result the Italians managed to conquer what is rightfully theirs, like the Yugoslavian coastal provinces and some French provinces including Marseille. The Italian influence in the Mediterranean is getting bigger. The Italian Navy finally showed what they were made of by not only having the guts to leave port, but also by sinking something like 10 enemy ships, mainly submarines, without losing a single one themselves. A cunning and daring plan to take Suez, proposed by the Germans, was accepted and the Italian Navy moved a big German force to Suez after they had already conquered it with paratroopers. The timing was perfect and Suez is now firmly held by Germans.

Propaganda, a weapon of war.

In light of the recent development the German propagandamachine did not have any troubles raising morale at home and abroad, many innovative and catchy slogans were created and could commonly be heard even in conquered territory. Above all military achievements were treasured, and many great leaders got their own propaganda team assigned to them as an integral part of their command.

The most popular ones even got their own action figures made and it was said that both Guderian and Manstein were the most popular.

manstaktion.jpg

The German ministry of Propaganda would also like to deny that the entirety of the German Panzer is now in Warsaw, and even if they were there they would only be there to take a vacation, there is absolutely nothing hostile with them on vacation in Warsaw, even if they aren't there, is it?

Prime minister Churchill and his advisors were in a very gloomy mood. With the threat of a German invasion unto the home isles themselves, although relatively well defended by the Royal navy, assorted UK and Belgian troops and parts of the Free French airforces, things had turned from bad to worse.

First the entire french army had capitulated just as bad weather was setting in. some remnants of +20 divisions managed to flee from the approaching Germans and reassemble in other parts of the world after making their way through neutral nations. Only a few battleworthy units are on its way to the front line to struggle for the liberation of their beloved motherland together with their English allies.

The German army then crushed its fascist brotherland Spain to occupy the important British naval base at Gibraltar. Great Britain had no forces to spare for this campaign. The garrison was evacuated by sea at the same time as German assault engineers were approaching the city.

Then fell Yugoslavia without being able to offer much resistance. Portugal is under invasion and have no means to defend themselves.

German troops have made a daring landing at Suez to cut of trafic into the mediterranean luckily the Allies already have quite a few naval forces available here already. What will never be understood is how the entire Italian navy could slip through unnoticed whit such an amount of scouting vessels dispersed in this area? Many of them were of course sunk before they could signal the approaching navy's location. Still it is hoped that the Royal navy will be able to take a heavy toll from the supply vessels that must feed the recently landed troops.

Also Britain's ally Greece is still fighting. Although large parts of the nation is already occupied by the Germans the Greek army is known for its tenacity and superb elan. We hail our ally's courage!

With most of the Europan continent under the fascist yoke the Great Democray in the West must surely awake and answer the lamentation of the oppressed millions in the old world. Once this happens the opressors will regret their crimes! For this day we fight...

March 1940 to August 1940

The UK is losing on every front.

Mainland Greece fell as expected but the entire Greek army was successfully evacuated to Creete. unfortunately the idiotic AI killed the small Greek fleet by repeatedly sending it out to sea to be bombed to pieces. The unability to turn off the AI is very annoying, now as well as in HOI1!

Turkey was a lost cause from start. With no means of sending reinforcements the Turkish army was chanceless against the invaders.

A small UK expeditionary force made it's best to postpone the annexation of Sweden by landing in Gothenburg and temporarily liberating the city. But to no avail. The entire Swedish fleet was sunk by the German fleet thanks to the Canadian commander in the theatre. The BEF was then sent to Narvik in an attempt to stem the German advance in Norway but once again had to evacuate. All of Western Europe except the Netherlands is now in German hands.

Tobruk had to be evacuated by sea when some +40 axis divisions made a thrust towards Alexandria. The Desert force now holds El Alamein.

The Canadian army made a landing on the Sinai and almost annihilated von rundstedt and 5 German infantry divisions. If it wasn't for some extreme Axis naval manouvers they would be captured for sure! Total sea domination showed unable to prevent their evacuation.

Churchill was furious when reports of 3 carriers sunk in the port of Alexandria finally reached him to late to do anything about it. Although 12 squadrons of improved interceptors under able command tried to prevent this along with reinforced AA defences the Axis could pull this one off. The only good news is that 3 Italian naval squadrons were totally annihilated in the raids.

Germany once again secured the Suez channel, effectively blocking of the mediterranean, making Alexandria no more than a useless graveyard for shipping tonnage.

Large but inefficient allied forces were sent to Iraq to stem the Axis advance from Turkey but is retreating in disorder unable to stop the high quality German Panzer forces spearheading the advance. With the med closed and Iraq secured what will be the Axis next objective? Persia? India? With UK standing alone there will be nothing stopping them from going there. The only positive thing is that losses have been relatively light so far but so has the axis ones.

Germany continued to rage around Europe and surroundings with Italy as a support act. Strangely enough it has been something of a quiet session for Italy. Our territory has been expanded a lot, but our great soldiers could sit back, keep an eye on our enemies in the North African desert and discuss about women, cars and football. In the meantime German divisions did most of the dirty work in the Middle East. Greece and Turkey are among the countries conquered and Italy decided to give the suppressed people of Tunesia and Algeria back their freedom, so the ideal of reconstructing Mare Nostrum is nearing completion. Ninety percent of the coastline is controlled by either Italy or by one of its allies.

There was some fighting involving Italians though. The most important land battle was the retaking of Tobruk and the march to El Alamein that followed. The UK has put up fortifications there, so the Italians would rather take England on in a football match than in a military battle the way things are now. We have won the last two World Cups after all. The most important provinces of Ethiopia were lost, but on the 1st of September 1939 Mussolini had changed his mind and decided not to make East Africa a priority and therefore didn't send any reinforcements after that date.

The Italian sailors had less time to think of women, cars and football. Our navy has been active and patrolled the Red Sea in an attempt to delay UK reinforcements reaching Egypt scaring off some CW transport fleets, but not sinking anything. After the loss of the Italian ports in the Red Sea, the fleet returned to the Mediterranean where it served as an important means of transport for the Wehrmacht. Italian naval bombers assisted the Luftwaffe in the historic attack of Alexandria, where all three carriers were sunk by Axis planes. We lost a lot of planes and pilots, but their heroic efforts have not been in vain. The efforts of the fallen pilots will be remembered forever and construction of a monument in their honour has already started. In Italy itself the people are full of praise and convinced that a daring attack like this could never happen in Tarento.
