Italy jan 36 - dec 40

The year of 1936 started out calm and quiet, apart from the minor colonial war in Ethiopia. But soon the United Kingdom created politically chaos in the Balkans by couping several legal goverments and setting up their own marionet regimes. Il Duce now found himself threatend by the UK puppet nations of Yugoslavia and Greece and when he searched for support only Hitler answered the calls, luring Italy into the German master plan.

When German intelligence sources warned of a near British lead operation to gain control of Albania Il Duce decided to this time act before the UK, and did so with much success. Adding Albania to the Italian realm meant much for both the Italian industry and self esteem.

In 1939 Austria joined Germany and the Italian friends in Germany became a new neighbour in the north. Soon tension started to rise in Europe and eventually France declared war on Germany. France was joined by among others UK and Poland in the war. When UK was busy elsewhere Il Duce saw the possibilty to revenge himself by invading Yugoslavia and Greece. Well timed naval landings and rapid troops movements ensured swift victories against the British puppets and the Italian realm was expanded to include almost half the Balkans. At the same time France was quickly over run by Germany and so was Denmark, Poland and half of Baltikum.

The following year Hitler started to send messages suggesting that Italy should gain control of the natural resources of Bulgaria. No such action was made though as Il Duce feared Old Sam would intervene or assist the allies if so where done. But somehow President Roosevelt persuaded the Congress to join the allies against Germany. Seing that happend Il Duce decided to attack Turkey in order to cut off all attempts of Allied intervention in the Balkans.

Germany sent a small Expedition Force lead by the highly regarded officer Guderian to help the Esercito Italiano and Blu marino Italiano to plan and execute the invasion. With massive landings on both the north and south coast and numerous corps attacking with mobile forces from Greece all important cities was quickly conquered. Italian negotiators asked from the captured Turkish government to sign a treaty where Turkey would remain independant but forced giving up control of Bosporen and certain areas for miltary bases to Italy. While the Turkish Prime Minister refused to do this Italy declared Turkey an Italian protectorate.

Whether Italy will join the Axis and Germany is today unknowed but the actions of the United Kingdom may have stripped Italy of any other options, by forcing Italy into the German net.
