Often times when fighting a war I will look to see how much tribute I can demand. I find that the options for my demands make no sense. I do not get to set the amount of money, I just am given an up and down button where usually the first choice puts me above a possible war score. I have often seen the first step be in to 70-90% range and the next click up be well over 140% warscore required.

Why not make the amount requested in tribute scale by gold amounts instead of preset guessed amounts? The demand Gold feature works perfectly.

Suggestion: Make the buttons for demand tribute scale by 0.01 gold per month instead of whatever wonky calculation is done for it now. Display to the player the warscore calculated to be required for each step of 0.01 gold per month. That way I can decide to ask for a tribute amount that matches a 40% score and take a province too easily in a peace deal! Right now that situation is impossible because the first click gives a very undesirably high demanded amount.

Note: I am aware you can click up a few times and back down to get an amount that might work, but that is frustrating and not working as designed.

This issue is VERY old and has not been solved:

Edited because I can't read.

I agree, it's very irritating. Ideally it'd just be a sliding bar, but I don't see that happening any time soon...

However, in earlier versions they actually did have tribute increments set at specific values, but that allowed the player to set the tribute absurdly high, to the point where the AI couldn't afford to pay and was forced to break tribute. That'd give the player another CB, so they could attack again and gain more land and get another tribute, etc. The current system is designed to work around the country's monthly income to avoid this, but for some reason it gives a crazy amount of weighting to tribute.

I just tried to ask for tribute from a fairly crippled Egypt and the first click put me at a request of 104% warscore. It just isn't possible to demand tribute like that. The formula for basing off of a country's income is not taking warscore into account, but instead giving arbitrary increments. What I suggest the mechanic should do is calculate what the tribute demand is for 100% warscore, then give the player incremental fractions of that as a choice.
