I always felt appalled at how my motherland left poor Poland to face the might of the Wehrmacht in 1939 while we rushed to drink French wine and diddle the mamoiselles. Especially since, after defeat, the brave Poles, some of whom I had the privilege to know in my youth, flocked to our shores and manned several fighter squadrons which may well have tipped the balance in our own struggle against "Fat Hermann", as well as many army and naval units.
So, my first game in the demo was played as UK, and my first action, after flushing the "Nervous Nellies" from my cabinet, appointing various commanders to formations, and setting tech and production targets (mostly to support future air and naval defence objectives) was to dispatch an expeditionary force to Poland.
This was set up in the "diplomacy" panel. First I had to take "Diplomacy" back from the AI, then "Send Expeditionary Force"....In a fit of optimism I sent EVERYTHING except HQ London.....after all, if we could stop the evil Bosche on the Vistula, then the French should be able to hold The Maginot line against a depleted Wehrmacht. No half measures for our gallant allies!
Hmmm.....now all my units have little Polish flags and I can't do a damned thing with them.....still I can at least direct my transports to load them while I send the assembled Naval might of our glorious allies the Orkney Isles to escort them through the Baltic.
OMG....the entire British land forces, now serving under little Polish flags, will not leave the lovely English....or Scottish, pubs. Seems that their newly acquired Polish accents are having such an effect on the local chavettes as to overcome any desire to leap aboard the palatial troop transports! And to make matters worse some of my Naval units have dashed into Le Havre, run up the Polish Bi-colour and are jabbering away in Polish chit-chat with no desire to obey English recall signals.....I blame calvados and unshaven desmoiselles..:-(
Quickly I fire the Foreign office and seize the only direct line to Poland.....All my attempts to regain control of my Expeditionary Force which won't expedition are met with polite acknowledgement and a happy click telling me that they will return home (to Poland!!!???) after a week or so, but nothing happens!!!! Ooooops, there goes half my military, I guess my concession from the French to send units through their territory ain't going to help a whole lot
, lets see what we can do with just the Navy and some air units.
Well, as the entire British Army dissipates itself in the hostelries of the British Isles while wearing Polish colours Adolf steamrollers into Warsaw and independent Poland goes stripey and disapears into the uniform greyness of Greater Germany......But they STILL don't return to my control...
At least the French are holding well on the Maginot line, and there is no sign of the Grey machine coming on an end-run through the low countries. German submarine and surface ship losses to the Orkney Navy continue to mount and British destroyers are patrolling the convoy lines down as far as Walvis Bay and well out into the Atlantic. The Demo ends: Germany 1 Poland 0.
Having survived a vote of no-confidence in the House of Commons, primarily due to the support of the brewery interests and the baby-carriage manufacturers' coalition I am off to read the manual and try to figure out how to mount a "Proper" Expedition to Poland.
