I have my desktop resolution at 1024x768. I am also playing EU2 at 1024x768. Sometimes when I save and exit the game, my desktop resolution is reset to 800x600?

I have renamed the into movie folder which was suggested in another thread but that has not helped.

I am using the 1.06 patch (I had patched to 1.05 previously)

Win98SE
MSI Geforce3 Ti200 (41.09 drivers)
SB PCI 128 sound

Anyone else run into this problem? Any way to prevent this? Thanks.

We have seen this on very rare occasions with a few people's systems. Although considerable effort has been made to try to track down the problem, it still happens occasionally.

Could you please do me a favour and run dxdiag.exe and then paste the full text report here for us to have a look at (just click the "Save All Information" button, open it with Notepad and then copy & paste it here).

Thanks.

Sorry, I was away for a few days. Here's the info you requested. Also forgot to mention that I have ZoneAlarm 2.6.88 running all the time.

This only happens under win98 and winme, never under NT or 2000 or XP. If it is at all possible to update your OS ....

A couple other suggestions that might help...

Update your video and sound drivers. I know that nVidea has a Decemebr 2002 update that is considerably more stable than the one you've got and I'm betting that there must be a more recent sound driver for that Creative card than a 2000 beta retail release. See the "Self Help Guide" (link in my sig.) towards the bottom for links to nVidea and Creative's websites.

On occasion having a game deviceplugged in can do some odd things. Try unplugging your joystick and/or gamepad before launching the game.

As FrosT37 and AndrewT said, it wouldn't be the worst idea to consider XP... ;) :)

No problem. Let us know how it turns out.

I've got exactly the same problem with a very similar configuration; interestingly, it's been a lot worse with 1.06 than 1.05.

(specs:

Win98SE
TNT2 (41.09 drivers)
SB PCI 64 sound
)

I've basically given up on this one, and if I want to start EU2 again after closing it (it gives an DirectX error if it screws up your resolution, as well as zapping keyboard shortcuts) I use CTRL-ALT-DEL to kill EU2. Messy, but it works.

Out of curiosity, what drivers are you running on those two cards?

Same as RobMC for the NVidia's (I'm pretty sure 41.09 is the latest...) and a bit more recent for the Creative stuff. They don't seem to have been updating it though, and it's tricky because there are multiple versions around under different names on their website (and different ones on the Asia-Pacific site compared to the US ones), and more ones on the Dell site. Annoyingly, the more recent ones which I've installed have worse DOS emulation support than the earlier ones.

Just to add my two cents.

Even after patching with 1.06, I still experience this annoying little problem, though (luckily) not after a CtD. Yes, those still happen on occasion as well.

However, 1.06 has introduced a new variant to the problem. With 1.05, one of two things could go wrong. First, failing to restore desktop resolution and thus retaining the 800x600 from the final EU2 screen. Second (though very rare), a fatal error in DXHELP. Both errors block DirectX from further use without a reboot.

Now the third variant, introduced by version 1.06. The screen remains in 800x600, but goes black. Pressing <ctrl><alt><del> produces a normal Windows mouse pointer and a task list, but the screen remains black. It's as if DirectX is still active. The task manager no longer shows EU2 as a running process.

The only way out of this situation is the hard reset button, which (naturally) prompts a SCANDISK on my 60 GB HDD with the next reboot. Very, very annoying.

I really would like the programmers from Paradox to open up the source code archive, and retrieve the EU2 exit code that was in version 1.00, and paste it into the next patch. 1.00 never failed to exit properly. Only versions 1.04, 1.05 and 1.06 have this annoying habit.

Jan Peter

EDIT: Oh, I forgot. Win98SE, SB Audigy II (latest drivers), GeForce 4 Ti4200 (NVidia reference 41.09), desktop at 1280x960 16bit color, Athlon XP1600+, 512MB RAM, latest DirectX 8.1b, DxDiag shows no problems

I think you may be on to something there.

I played through all of the tutorials using 1.05 and my desktop resolution was never affected. I started my first real game with 1.06 and that's when my problems began.

Again, it doesn't happen all the time - maybe 60% of the time.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions - and the details too. I'll pass them on to Johan for his consideration. :)

IIRC, that was the problem, Johan can't get DX to shut down properly.

Hopefully, he'll come around here...
