I've been trying to find a way to add a bit more flavor to tributaries, but I've been thwarted by the fact that there appears to be absolutely no way to detect who is a tributary of who. All I can find is tribute=yes, num_of_vassals=x. None of overlord, is_vassal etc from eu3 work.

Does anyone know of a way to detect overlord or tributary, even if it's a roundabout way? This is really frustrating me since I have a whole event chain that just won't work.

Tributaries should only be able to ally with their suzerain which means you can use the trigger alliance_with and the scope ally together with tribute to make the connection between the two.

To see how it is done have a look at Cheexsta's Total Conquest mod.

Doesn't work if the tributary is not allied though, which is a fairly frequent occurance.

If there's no other way, I guess I'll have to put together some kind of frankenstein variable tracking event.

And done, wrote a tribute tracker that keeps track of overlord/tribute pairings with flags (tributary_0 corresponds to overlord_0 etc).

What a mess though, wish they'd port more of EU3's functionality to Rome's engine.
