I'm currently trying to figure my way through direct connect with the matchmaking now done through steam, while it was working before it is now no longer able to connect between me and my friend, any ideas on what changed?

the last time we were able to connect was while matchmaking was done through gamespy during the period when it wasn't working and was being transitioned into steams network.

it is now telling us both that the connection failed, host is not responding.

I tried this myself. It is really weird, becuause I got stuck on the connecting to host screen forever. When my friend tried to connect to me he got the host not responding message. Then we tried using VPN software and it said invalid adress (I know LAN is down, but worth a try). We could connect through the lobby normally though, the only problem is that only I can see my friend's game and he can't see mine. Thats a common problem with me, that's why we usually use VPN. I would be great if LAN would be back with the next patch, because it was taken out quite a while ago.

LAN game does work. I'm using openvpn with a friend and direct connect works through that. For some reason steam doesn't work for us (I can't even log into that chat, I always get an error).

The only problem we had was when I was using the windows firewall he couldn't see me (invalid address error I think), once that was down it worked.

So far I have tried using direct connect with hamachi, tunngle and openvpn. Tunngle said invalid address, the rest said "server not responding". All of them were tried while both my and my friend's firewalls were down. I don't have a clue what the problem is.

Okay, and you followed these steps?

HOW-TO: Direct Connect in Sword of the Stars II

HOST
1) Sots2 hosts on port 35000 by default, so you'll need to port forward that through your router (if you're behind one).
2) Players connecting will need your IP address, which you can obtain from http://www.whatismyip.org/.
3) Host the game like normal.

CLIENT
1) Enter the multiplayer lobby like normal-- you can use either LAN or Internet mode.
2) Click the "Direct Connect" button on the bottom bar, and then type in the IP address provided by the host.
3) Press OK.

Enjoy!

Its probably not a problem with the ISP because I have the same problem as Rommel. I'm absolutely sure that we are using the right IP adress when we tried to connect normally, but even if we weren't, using VPN software we can get IP adresses that we can use. And it didn't work with that either. It's also not a problem with the firewalls, since we tested it with them down.

My advice then is to post on the Kerberos tech forums and have them work with you, you'll need to be very specific however as the more info you give them the better they will be able to address it. All I can say is that it works for me. Don't be so sure about the ISP, I know one person who's ISP upgraded to the IPv6 protocals (which steam does not support) and had to get them to allow him a dual side IPv4 protocal to get it to work. But that's something you and Kerberos and or your ISP will need to work out.
