Right so while we're waiting for October and November to come around and get actual info on the games I thought we'd talk about something tangentially related.

Namely about maps and directions in space. On earth we use North/South East/West but what sort of dynamic would we use in Space? Well in Traveler and other sci-fi settings they use the following dynamic. The first sets of direction and coreward and rimward. Coreward is the direction towards the galactic core and rimward is the direction towards the galactic rim i.e away from the core. The second set of directions is spinward/(Trailing or anti-spinward). Spinward is the direction in which the galaxy is spinning and the other one is the opposite direction. These would be fairly universal and easy to establish direction in space.

To me this seems like a fairly elegant system of directions but it does have some problems. Problem number one is that it's two dimensional and there is no discernible way to establish an up and a down, unlike the other points. How ever to the nature of FTL travel in Stellaris, this wouldn't a big thing. The other problem is pinpointing the location of the galactic core and where exactly that is.

Now you may ask, why use all these words for direction, why not designate them as North/South, East/West, instead of using the new words? Well that's a legitimate point but in my mind it would be nice to have separate "directions" in space and on the planet.

Now this is very tangential to Stellaris itself as determining what the directions are precisely in game would likely not matter all that much. Still though I think it would a nice touch to think about the directions that way. So what do you guys think, is this the system of directions you think that interstellar empires should use or do you have a better idea?

Saying "north" side of the galaxy, and north side of the planet doesn't really conflict with each other. I think it works fine.
The map might not even be a spiral galaxy at all. All things considered, even though I like stuff like this being used in fictional universes, I think it's probably best, and simplest, if we just stick to the usual North/South/East/West system. :)

I'm struggling to think of an EU or CK2 instance of the cardinal directions being mentioned outside of flavor text.

Good point... Though I do mention it a lot in my head, and the names of armies.

Which is why I said this is very tangential. Still I think that this is an interesting topic to discuss.

It is interesting. I just can't think of much to say on the topic. Every species would likely use different culturally specific names for cardinal directions and may well have different cardinal directions entirely. North and south are pretty objective for people on earth and important for weather and travel reasons, but will the citizens of Yondarim see the galactic core as relevant? Maybe homeward and outward will be the most important distinction to make.

You can define a North and South side of the galaxy.
From that, you get West and East relative to them.
And you also have up (away from the center) and down (towards the center)
6 directions, all in familiar terms.

Even today we are able to create top-down views of the galaxy (not perfectly accurate, of course), so there really is no problem in putting them in an arbitrary coordinate system and assigning N-S-E-W directions. But there's just something to the coreward-rimward-spinward system that rings 'space'... that vast sea of lights, waiting to be explored... and I like it.

I agree with Coreward, Rimward and Spinward... but the fourth direction should be Widdershins instead of Anti-Spinward.

Widdershins means "moving sideways like a crab".
