It's 1900. I'm Germany. Germany owns most of South Africa. The British own only two claims in Namibia and one province in the state north of the state of South Africa. Britain declares war on Oranje and Transvaal, even though it has no land border with them and has no way of attacking these two countries. It tries to anyway by sending ships around the Cape of Good Hope which it can't land. Britain has no ports anywhere in Africa. Germany is frantically trying to build a navy which can compete with Britain, and sees an opportunity to level the playing field. Germany sends a fleet of 8 warships (Battleships and Cruisers) as an expeditionary force to Oranje and directs these ships to the Cape of Good Hope where a large fleet of UK clipper transports are milling about. The British ships are quickly destroyed, at which point the German ships disappear off the map. I looked everywhere for my ships, which took years to build, and couldn't find them. So I exited the game, opened the savegame file and put the German ships back in the port of Capetown. Then, I tried it again. Another fleet of British transports and Man-O-Wars were waiting off the coast. I destroyed them, and my fleet again disappeared.
Maybe this is not a bug, but it surely is not WAD. If you lend a navy to a country with no coastal provinces, your navy should not simply disappear when it tries to return to port. It should stay there, move to an adjacent sea zone, or return to the port you sent it out from. The ships are disappearing immediately after I destroy the British transports. There is not even a fraction of a second in which to retake control of the ships before they disappear.
The same thing happened to me in an earlier game, when I lent a navy to Belgium. When they lost control of their last coastal province, my expeditionary navy disappeared. It's not worth using the 'lend expeditionary force' feature when dealing with ships. It only works well for armies.
