Since the regions in VV are static a lot of considerations are necessary when modding them.

What do you people think should be the deciding factor? Semi-historic like Vanilla or?

And should their size be standardised to a greater extend to take better advantage of the game mechanics linked to them like regional legions and independence seeking governors? And if so what would be a good size; 5, 10, 15 or 20+ provinces?

Personally I prefer them based on historical provinces. I think the number of field armies a nation can have in play should be reduced. This would make the regional armies and their governors more important.

It might be possible to build three region templates, one based on Macedonian Satrapies, one based on the Roman Republic and one based on the Roman Empire. You could then interchange them between games and perhaps save games.

In addition to your question - which I also would like an answer for - I was wondering how and where you can edit the names of regions? :D

The names can be edited in the vae_victus.txt localisation file.

That was actually my goal - severely reducing the number of possible generals to encourage the player to make better use of regional troops. This is unfortunately hampered somewhat by the small and static regions in the game which is why I put the subject up for debate.

I am not the biggest fan of the historical regions because they are historic for specific reasons that often do not apply to games diverging from actual history which most of them tend to do even when you play Rome.

That being said standardised regions would of course draw inspiration from history but I would like to see regions of maybe 10 to 15 provinces each to make the game more interesting particular when a governor declares independence.

It is completely possible to make several different region files (technically that would just be a very small mod) but the number of regions and their names (system names; they could of course have different localisation) would have to be exactly the same if you were to change the files between saves since they are referenced extensively in the save game files.

Could be fun to make a region editor in the .net framework so players could change their regions during game play :)

And Schou; thank you for reviving this thread :)

I to would like to see flexible regions in game but alas it wont happen anytime soon. Historical regions were often inherited from empire to empire (Persian to Hellenic) so they are important. Reorganising them would cause administrative instability for a while. Using the "old" system already in place should be easier for a nation.

In Epigoni I am adding more regions in the east by breaking up Parthia and Mesopotamia, the opposite of what you are suggesting. I am hoping that it will stimulate more problems with the Seleucids.

What would be really nice is if you could appoint a same governor to two or more conjoined regions. This might even be able to be done. I know you can appoint a character the ruler of two nations at the one time.

I think you could use the one big localisation file for all the regions. Where the region names dont exist the are ignored by the game (IIRC).

Wow, could this really be done live in game?

Good point, though I still think that larger regions allows for better use of regional legions and bigger revolts.

Interesting. The idea being that more governors are harder to manage and control than larger regions?

I think that would be possible with some titles and removal of all references to the "has_governor" trigger etc. This would also add the possibility of "rolling" revolts where the region where the governor actually sits revolts first and then the other regions follow by event when he gets more momentum.

However it would not be possible to have regional legions except in the region where he sits.

The problem is that the region tags have to be the same if you want to do this with a save game to change them during a game, so it would have to be interchangeable localisation files for it to work.

No, not live, but save, edit (with a tool) and reload could probably be done without much hassle as long as we keep the same number of regions and their names.

On the main Rome forum I made an expansion suggestion for a new class of proconsular regions made up of two or more current game regions. For example, Hispania would be composed of Terraconensis, Lusitania, and the southern Spanish region (I forget the name). There would be lots of potential benefits to a system like that (all Hispania revolting at once, anyone?).

I'd be impressed if someone could mod that in with the current game. ;)

So, in-game redesignation of provinces into regions [a la the Theatre system in HoI3] would be a feature request for a new expansion...?

Well SF showed it could be done so... one can only hope we get something similar to that.

Would have to be limited by the governor so no more provinces than finesse score and no more cohorts than martial score or something like that to balance it a bit.

In the pre-VV version of MN we did this using the trade route system, so routes from the capital would link to regional capitals, which would link to provincial capitals and from there to provinces.

It worked in theory but it was a pain during a civil war and did not port well to VV.
