Do Colonies Count?

Trying out the Swedes and I've gotten into war with Denmark (there's a shock). I've taken Jamtland earlier and so this war I rollup Trondheim and the other (not Oslo province) falls to me as well. I have a 0 strength unit grab Finnmark and Navrik.

I go to make peace and I've got 3 stars? Huh? Isn't each province worth 2? How is this possible- does taking a colony count against you?

1) Colonies (provinces with a main city of less than 700 people) don't count for stars, since they can't be defended by fortifications.

2) Each province taken doesn't give you two stars, anyway.
