I just encountered the following problem: When the EU came out, I installed it on the computer in my office at work (hey, don´t tell anyone ;)) together with patch 1.01. I played only a short testgame, but it worked. I then forgot about that and played EU on my system at home only. This morning I had a little leftover time and remembered the copy on my system at the office. I upgraded to patch 1.03, started it, but the game returned to Windows after a few seconds loading and not even showing the title screen.

Question: Can I do something about it right now without having access to my CD? Or do I have to have the CD in the drive while updating? Or does the new patch involve, that I have to have the CD in the drive while starting the game? (Probably not, because I didn´t encounter this when playing at home.)

You need the cd in the the cdrom drive while playing or else the game exits after the blackstar logo (or is it before, dont recall)

Huhh? But why then could I play without the CD Rom in my drive before? If this was a bug, it was a nice one! (Of course for my 'work morals' it is much better not to be able to play EU at my office ;))

Edit: I had the game installed with 1.01. It worked definitely without the CD Rom in the drive. I think, I will maybe try to reproduce this 'bug' and inform You about the outcome.

It's before the logo. I felt terrible yesterday when I forgot to put the CD into the drive and this occured :)

man none of you must know how to crack games... look just dl a cd ripper and then you can play any game without the cd. or you change the option to show all hidden files and copy the entire contents of the cd to your hard drive. that would work as well. might i suggest not getting a cd ripper since they are illegal. plus, they can really screw up your system if you dont know how to use them properly...

Due to the blacked out area of the CD it is not possible to copy it and that´s a good antipiracy measure, which I appreciate. But for the sake of playing convenience it should be possible to play the game without the CD in the drive, as it was so nicely done with 1.01. Is there no way to prevent unauthorized copying without resorting to this drastic 'CD has to be in the drive' restriction? Wouldn´t it suffice If one had to insert the CD every other month or so (I remember this from the Chess program 'Fritz')?
