I was playing Turkey, sitting like a good little boy - focusing on North Africa, diploannexing Wallachia, taking out the Persians and cutting off the Russians at the pass (taking Sibir) ... which turned out to be not necessary, since the Poles militarily annexed all of the Golden Horde, leaving Russia stranded. They fought quite a bit over those territories and Poland seemed pre-occupied putting down rebellions, Russians, Prussia and the Teutonic Knights.

Austria was on bad terms with Bohemia, Venice and Hungary. I wasn't too interested in the Balkans, but I wanted a European conquest, not colonies. So... war? I waited until those 4 started another war and intervened, hoping to snag Venice. Easy enough - Venice, Hungary, Austria - they were weak and couldn't put up resistance. I didn't want to give them any more reason to fight me than necessary, so I just annexed Venice and took money from the other 3.

Before I manage a peace settlement with Hungary, P-L declares war. My front was heavily fortified and guarded... they steamrolled it. I snuck in troops through Bessarabia, and was merrily going along doing some damage until they sent some of the Moscow front armies down to smack me around. While I was busy in Donetsk, they wiped out my entire Balkan force! This is the mid 1600s, I had higher tech than anyone, my forces were in good morale, stood in large groups (60+) and were wiped off the face of the Earth. P-L wasn't stopping and kept taking provinces - all of the Balkans except Thrace, Hellas and the province South of Hellas... I finally had to settle on losing all the mainland Venetian possessions. 5 years later, Hungary, P-L, Austria and some minor allies chased me back to Thrace alone :(

This makes me wonder... do nations get bonuses against enemies they did good against historically? b/c P-L seemed to be having troubles with the Russians, but they crushed me like a bug.

diploannexing Wallachia

??

Is that doable as Turkey ?

I though Wallachia was Christian ...

Do nations get combat bonuses/penalties against others?

Don't think so. They might have had a pretty good leader though.

I thought all you had to do to diploannex someone was have your relation with them at 190+ for 15 years after they become your vassal. And since Wallachia begins as Turkey's vassal, that would explain it.

As for the bonuses, leaders make a huge difference. I just annexed England this afternoon. I had taken over all of their providences...except Bombay. I took my Polish General Smiriticicohichionich, gave him 6 thousand infantry, loaded him up in Eastern Pomerianain, and sent him to Bombay. There, he defeated 55 full morale armies, and since Bombay had no fortification, I took it and quickly annex one of the greatest powers in history.

Perhaps Poland's land tech is considerably higher than your's? Ever think about that?

I'm pretty sure I had the highest tech out there - at least my troops looked the most advanced. But the leader could explain it, and explain why P-L was having trouble with the Russians, while their southern force mopped me up.

I've been having the same problem as Portugal. I had a couple civil wars that turned me Protestant, and now basically almost all of Europe hates me. When I fought Spain, and when I fought France, their troops devasted my more technical troops. Both wars ended ok, but my larger units could not stand up to theirs anywhere. In fact, I haven't won a single battle against a Europian power (fortunetly, I've done slightly better overseas). I'm assuming leaders have a lot to do with it, as does terrain and number of cavalry.
