There are many types of firewalls you can use, they are separated into 2 categories.

Hardware and Software

Hardware firewalls are usually in your routers if you have high speed internet and you share that connection.

Software firewalls like ZoneAlarm, the one from Norton, the one from Mcafee etc are good because they allow you to open ports that specific games need to function etc.

As far as I know (I may be wrong here) the firewall built into Windows does not configure as well as the ones I mentioned above.

A bit of advice, do NOT go without a firewall of somekind (hardware or software) as it will invite LOTS of trouble.

There are some free firewalls out there (I think ZoneAlarm is still free) that are better than no firewall at all.

If you have the chance to have a separate firewall than the one in windows go for it.

In the sticky about routers in this group there is alot of talk about routers/firewalls how to set them up etc. Hats off to teHeath for putting it all together.

i turn my firewall off.

I do advise you for you own safety, never do that. ZoneAlarm works perfectly for me.

Allow Hoi2.exe and microsoft directplay helper as exeptions in the XP firewall. If you can't join games then alt-tab and see if there isn't a dialog asking if you want to unblock HoI2. This should happen if you have set the XP firewall to say when blocking a program.

Windows firewall is crap, use sygate or zonealarm both of which you can leave turned on while playing. :)
