Which one do you usually start on? I can't remember ever using the 1936 start except one time I played as Ethiopia, I just like the more time to buildup 1933 gives you.
As the USA, there is no "good neighbor policy" which means all of those stupid NAPs don't exist with the America's. That opens up a ton of possibilities. It also gives me time to build realistic ic levels. Remember, in WW2, the USA outbuilt the rest of the world combined. As China, it gives me time to defeat the warlords before Japan comes calling. I can also build limited ic and infrastructure. As Japan, bigger navy for the pacific war. As Brazil, time to build into major status and get in a quick war vs Venezuela before the usa wakes up. As Italy, time to revamp my ic and infra before the main event. I also, sometimes, puppet Spain to make closing the Med easier.I almost exclusively play the 1936 start. Until now, I hadn't even considered the 1933 start. What do people prefer about it? I imagine it's just a long time without any action.

36 Germany is how I start with them. It is my firm belief that the 33 start cannot match the 36 start. Jmo ymmvWhen playing Germany it hadn't occured to me to play anything else than from on 1933... after all that's when the Nazis took over and there are also a lot of events, also a lot of dissent to bring down. Why should anybody consider starting 1936?
It needed @TK3600 or @son of liberty, can't remember, to point out that it is nearly impossible to get manually as much tech, IC and military units from 1933 to 1936 in comparison to as when you start in 1936. Quite the unbeliever I checked, yes, true. No reason for me to start Germany in 1936, completly wrong time.
It also fits to my playstyle of raising infrastructure in certain key regions, building more airports, making a long time plan (the usual German hobby "world take over", tricky but very challenging... it will work, just give me one more try).
Most other countries are even more in need of time: minors often need years to build enough infra to be allowed to build the first additional IC, democracies need years to change policies until they are enabled to act and so on.
Germany is sort of an exception that 1936 often give better result. Most country get stronger in 1936 if start in 1933, especially those behind in techs. When playing Germany it hadn't occured to me to play anything else than from on 1933... after all that's when the Nazis took over and there are also a lot of events, also a lot of dissent to bring down.
