Single player game situations can make good starting points for multiplayer, and vice versa. Is that supported in Stellaris?

Thanks

You can load a save game, from single player, howerver Ironman saves still can't be manually saved. Not sure if others can join in that one. The problem is other players only have the option to join, not create their own race/ethos, etc. However, if you are going for a theme based game, pre-making all the races and force them in when making the save might be a good idea.

Thanks, yes, the idea would be to have other players join in progress as existing empires. Would the original player empire have to be host?

From past Paradox experience with HOI, I'd expect anyone can use the file and anyone can pick any existing empire when loading up BUT there are a lot of things in previous titles that were not picked up in Stellaris. Really a dev question as to how it was designed. A test might look OK at first and then go haywire.

Tried it for a short time - SP save loaded in MP had hotjoin work and the game played as usual, but that is not proof it always will.
