If their area of influence overlaps they can share outside facilities.

This means mines, polymer plants, fungi farms - anything outside that is overlapped. This way you can have some workers from one dome and some from another.
 
If you are in dire need (e.g. an injured person needs a clinic), you can re-assign colonists between those domes, but they will not use the other dome's internal facilities by themselves.

I assume that is mostly a gameplay related design decision. If it wasn't the case, larger domes would be significantly less useful.
 
I mean, it kinda makes sense, conceptually. A spacesuit is (and probably always will be) more cumbersome to wear than your usual jacket, and there's plenty of safety protocol for going outside.

Tunnels would be nice, though. Make them expensive and maybe having to cross one would have a comfort penalty or something.

Just make large enough and with limited range, like a full triangle and you will use the larger domes when available, but you won't get stuck with problems, if you miss them for long.
 
I would love a Tech and a maintenance cost with tunnels you can soon balance them out as a large dome would be convenient and take less space where you will need lots of space for smaller domes, i dont see any less use for other types of domes if they can be connected as it feels like rival colonies with the current setup which your trying to govern them all but not as a whole

But it makes it hard to creat "Susie & Niki's People Management" Dome, cause old people retire and stop working...so when you shift them in to a "Retirememt Dome" they can work in the food store to survive and killing them brings a penalty...
