The game was running fine until I played with a few things in the editor, after which I started getting "UNKNOWN STRING WANTED" in place of a few leaders and techs and units. It was getting annoying so I decided to uninstall and reinstall a fresh copy.

The uninstaller worked fine, it complained about a few .bmp files but i went and deleted the whole folder manually afterward. I ran ccleaner and got rid of all trace of it from my registry.

But when i put the CD in to reinstall, I get the autoplay screen (the one where it prompts you to Install/uninstall/exit etc), I click install and it just makes a wierd noise and closes the menu.

I'm running vista if that helps o_O

EDIT: I've also restarted a number of times and turned UAC off, so im pretty sure it's neither of those...

maybe when you put the CD in, go to 'My computer' hover over the 'hoi2' icon, right click and press 'explore' and this means you can access the files that are on the CD, this can be useful for you can see if the CD files have been corrupted or if any key files are missing, this sounds like a fault to the CD files, especially if so many links in the game say 'UNKNOWN STRING WANTED'.

Hope this helps the problem. :)

Cheers for the response. When i tried exploring the CD explorer crashed. I guessed it was a scratch on the CD.

Anyway, when i tried someone else's CD, it worked fine, so i think i must have scratched mine somehow.

Cheers again :)
