I'm confused about a few things and I wonder if someone could help me out. First off, are ships restricted to ports with colonies only? If so, does that mean it's necessary to establish little colonies all over the place if I don't want to lose all my ships through attrition?

Second, I recieved a mission from the monarch to capture a province held by a rival empire. I've built my armies and supposedly I have a CB. How do I start the war or invade the province?

If I get a mission to "get China out of Japan" from the monarch what's the best way to get over to the opposite side of the world? Do I have to build an enormous navy so that I'll have something left after the attrition?

I've got a million more, but these will do for a start. BTW, I am enjoying the game very much even though I haven't quite figured out what I'm doing.

1. yes or have an explorer at the head of your fleet (they have attrition modifiers)

2. Send a diplomate to that country and declare war

3. Nope, because attrition is in percentage, so chances are you'll loose the same number of ships. The best way is to either trade for maps (diplomacy->exchange discoveries) or sack an ennemy capital that you know will have visited the far east. Other ways to get maps: random events and sometime when you sink an ennemy ship.

Note: You seem to have gotten yourself in a weird situation with the monarch dictating all of your actions. This is because you have dynamic missions on in your options. you might want to turn them off so that you can concentrate on learning the game.
 
Thanks for the tips. The missions from the monarch were, frankly, starting to piss me off. Do you turn them off under the missions menu? My daughter straightened up my room and I can't find my EU manual anymore.

I think I've got a great empire going in France and Central America and then I get some mission to get Ukraine out of Central Europe. Bizzare. Especially, since just getting there in the first place is almost impossible at the stage of the game I'm in now.

How do I get explorers or are they randomly generated? (I got a conquistador once)

I didn't let the monarch dictate my actions and that's the problem. I'm the dominant economic and military power but by I'm losing mission points like crazy.

I'm also getting creamed in diplomacy. I, obviously, still have a lot to learn in that area, too.
 
France should get quite a few historical ones (set the message for new leaders as pop up with pause)

I always set missions of before the gam, in options. Dunno if u can change them midgame. But next time u load up try setting dynamic missions off before u load ur save.

It seems you have to choose the dynamic missions at the start of the game. If there's a way to turn it off in the scenario, I can't figure it out. This isn't too much of a problem for me since I'm still just learning the interface, etc. I'll just start again.

Even with the frustrations, this is easily the best game I've played since Civ II.
 
Well, actually, you have three choices :


-Trying to succeed in the missions given by your monarch...But as you already noticed, a lot of them are ridiculous and/or impossible to achieve...

-Turn off completely the missions (but you'll lack the mission points)

-Choose to pick your own missions in a list. But in this case you'll end up choosing the very easy "keep Artois" for 10 points and certainly not "discovering (some japanese region) before 1500", vassalize (your worst ennemy's name) /conquer (your best friend's name). And you'll get mission points way too easily.


Missions are somewhat (very) flawed. Not sure what I'll do in my next game.
 
Turning Off Dynamic Missions

You can turn off dynamic missions the next time you go to load the savegame. From the scenarios screen, click on the savefile & hit "Options". Turn dynamic missions to "OFF". You'll also be able to toggle through some other choices like game speed (which can also be done ingame with the + & - keys), victory conditions, whether minors can be annexed or not, & the like.

Most people on these boards find the missions an unnecessary distraction & turn them off. Even with the option turned off, you can choose to do the missions. But since no AI nation will then be doing any, this results in a bunch of free VP for you, which will make you feel a little cheap. ;) Some posters on these boards actually like the dynamic missions, as they simulate the often bizarre demands of the monarchs of the period. I haven't gotten that jaded yet - I just turn 'em off, & focus on my own objectives. Whatever makes you boat float, as they say. :)
 
Best way to deal with missions:

When you start the game immediately press the pause button. Then pick the "Keep xxx" missions from the missions list yourself. Exactly 5 years later there will be a pop up menu that says something like "Success! You have kept xxx......". When you see that box, IMMEDIATELY pause the game, and pick the "Keep xxx" missions from the mission list again. This way, you will earn 20 easy victory points every 5 years. Think about it, 100 years and you will get 400 points. 300 years and you will get 1200.

Never ever let your monarch pick the missions for you. Most of them are impossible or not worth the effort.

Yes, Monoriu...But what's the point in gaining VP for doing nothing? You could as well find some cheat code which add 1200 points to your score. What's the difference? Perhaps you could even find a way to score 5000 points from the very beginning, and you wouldn't have to play at all. I fail to understand this game concept....
 
The CONCEPT is good - if the missions are to keep CB provinces (Franche Comte, Naples, and Kent are the ones I`ve been asked to keep, as Spain) and if it asks you to vassalize someone who is (a) same religion and (b) not already a vassal of somebody else. "Vassalize Papal States" is annoying because it's flatly impossible to get a royal marriage with them.

I also repeatedly got offered "Conquer Cuzco" when I was already in Inca territory, and also "Conquer Orania/Tunisia" both of which are doable as Spain, except I didn't feel like it. Those made a lot of sense, I thought. Had to decide whether the extra VPs were worth the badboy hit for annexing the incas now, or wait another 5 years and do it in two chunks.

"Royal marriage to xxx" - this should never request a marriage that you already have, which won't expire for more than 5 years.

"No France/England in Caribbean" -This is a good mission, achievable but risky. (War with anybody and you could lose a trading post, which the French immediately rebuild...) On the other hand, "No Turkey in South Europe?" Their CAPITAL is in South Europe, and they can't be annexed....


The problem is that it needs so much more work to ensure the missions are sensible ones, but the principle I think is a good one. The second problem is getting the AI to take missions, so that it's not just the human player getting freebie points. (In MP games, they're probably an important part of gameplay - or do you all turn them off to start with?)
