Orthodox leader excommunicated by the Pope!
The Novgorod branch of the Rurikovitch established itself as the Kings of Lithuania in my 1066 game. All their lands are either Orthodox or Pagan. Yet, I recieved this message from the Pope asking me to stop lay nominations (BTW, despite the "ecclesial balance" law, I never got to nominate a singel replacement bishop myself!).
I refused to recognize his authority and didn't comply with his demands (I'm Orthodox, after all) and got excommunicated. Yup. The trait was added to my my character sheet. Bizarre, hey?
The only explanation I can find is that I still have a catholic bishop, inherited from v. 1.01. I upgraded to 1.02 long ago, but I still get catholic replacements in that single bishopric. Maybe that's the cause for papal interventioin, maybe not; perhaps it should be investigated further. But something in the game should have prevented my king from being excommunicated anyway.
BTW, my king died within two years of being excommunicated; do you think he's in Hell, now?
