I'm playing Spain in the IGC and I just hit the "Jean Calvin" event, which sparks the "Dutch Revolt". Now I have five provinces with a Nationalism rating of 39%, which is causing a dozen or so revolts every year in the Low Countries!

How long do these high levels of Nationalism remain? Do they reduce at the same rate as normal Nationalism (about 1% every 10 years)? Am I wasting my time fighting these revolts; should I just let these provinces break away?

It ends with Edict of Tolerance, in about 1600s. Hint: Holland needs only 3 provinces for independence: Holland, Zeeland and errr.. the one with Hague. Let them rebel, control the rest. Take all 3 and demand 2 of them. This way you lose only 1 province.

Fighting it: it's doable, but hard and pointless. You'll loose a lot of troops there and it's wiser to let them go. Naturally, if you have something against dutch, you may crush the rebellions for as long as you like. Just be careful- don't let all 3 above-mentioned provinces fall into rebel hands at once. This way they'll go independant before you can say: booo.

Thanks, hjarg. I have a couple more questions. If I do let Holland-Zeeland-Hague get controlled by the rebels all at once, do the Dutch now suddenly appear as a nation? Are they at war with Spain?

And if I do defeat an independant Dutch nation, and annex some of its provinces, do the annexed provinces still have "Dutch Nationalism" (39% chance of rebellion), forcing me to put down another endless series of rebellions? And what of the provinces of Flanders and Freisen? They have "Dutch Nationalism" now; would they lose it if an independant Dutch nation appeared but didn't include them? Or would they still have it, again forcing me to face an unending series of rebellions?

Yes, if rebels control these 3 provinces, Holland will appear. If they control any extra provinces, like Flanders or Friesen, they will be added to Holland as well. And Holland will be at war with Spain.

As soon as Holland appears, "Dutch nationalism" will stop in all provinces. No more rebellions in Flanders. If you annex some more, you will not get this event again. Just leave at least their capital to Dutch, or rebellions will start again.
