Only played through the first two missions so far. But I notice the Dwarves don't make good use of beds I build. Most of them they ignore. Sometimes choosing to just stand, and sleep around the food table instead. And it's especially annoying how they will sometimes ignore the closer beds in favor of going to the other side of the map to sleep in beds over there instead.

I don't know if that IS the case but maybe the dwarves prefer the better beds? Or do they stick to a certain bed they've slept in unless it's really too far away?

The only beds I built were all the straw beds so bed quality wasn't a factor. They did seem to prefer the same bed most of the time. I mainly noticed it because my researcher had beds right nearby his bench but he preferred to go across the map to the military outpost to sleep instead.

Okay, i had different bed qualities available so i thought this might be it. But so it seems that dwarves like to stick to their habits and don't want to sleep in a different bed every time OR those dwarves are too drunk to orient themselves in their own caves...

Only time will tell... or a nice dev maybe? ;)

When you build beds you can see two arrows that shows you were the dwarves can enter them, so you need a one square space on each side of the bed for them to use it. Could the case be that you have them to close together?

Yes that might explain it since I had them close together. Some stuff like this isn't all that obvious or pointed out to the player it seems. Like planting wood trees to get wood.

Does this mean on the other hand that dwarves usually pick the nearest bed for rest? I'm pretty sure i had my beds accessible from at least one side and still some dwarves marched on to other beds that stood further away.

Oh and i just got another idea while typing this: May it be possible that sometimes the dwarves first go off to eat something and then immediately after that become tired and go to the next bed and therefore it only SEEMS like they're walking far away from their initial position even though a bed is near them?

I've been finding that as long as there is at least the one side of the bed that has the green arrows showing then the dwarves will use that bed. In my game so far I do not have to have free space on both sides of the bed, but at least have the free space on one side of the bed. I don't know if it will make any difference in the long run but in my games thus far it's been fine to have only one side of the bed available (like putting a bed up against a wall sideways, or placing another bed right next to the other bed as long as one side is still showing the green arrows).
