I've always wanted to make an AAR and well I figured the 1st day of a year is a pretty good time :).

This will be my 1st AAR so don't be harsh on me :).
(My English sucks , I know)

Every update will be about one ruler. What he did, who he was and so on..
A little bit like Veldmarschalks AARs( I loved them :) ) but the quality won't be as high :p

I'll start as Janislaw z Czarnkowa (Latin: Iohannes de Charnekow), count of Lubusz in the Kingdom of Poland.

my goals for this aar:

to update at least once in a few days :)

In game:
-Become a duke ASAP
-Become King of Poland
-from then on just try to survive and expand :)

ooh and I'll be playing Deus Vult expansion with the DVIPv8 + COA.
and no cheating :) (or it will be noted)

-----------

Janislaw (1039-1060-1096) Duke of Pomeralia
Bartosz I (1078-1096-1109) King of Poland
Bolko I (1096-1109-1142) King of Poland and King of Bohemia(1116-)
Konrad I (1121-1142-1145) King of Poland and Bohemia

Good luck with your first AAR :)

I once planned on making an AAR about this count, but since I become duke and king of Poland withing one generation (Polands AI switched to elective law) I didn't continue

Dynasty de Charnekow

Janislaw z Czarnkowa
(Latin: Iohannes de Charnekow)
Born: ?.?.1039, Czarnkow, Kingdom of Poland
Died: 23.2.1096, Danzig, Kingdom of Poland

Janislaw1066.jpg

There is no information in the chronicles about Janislaws parents.
The legend goes that his father was a Frank, a son of a Duke.
And his mother a relative to the Kings of Poland.
But that was probably fabricated later by Bartosz to help claim the Polish throne.
Most historians today think that he probably was just from an minor Noble family.

Janislaw was born in the year 1039 in a rather small Polish town Czarnkow in County of Lubusz in Poland.
He became the Count of Lubusz around the year 1060, probably after the death of his father.

Janislaw was known as a merciful and temperate man, although he was also known to be trickish, often misleading people.

He was married twice. His first wife was Katarzyna (1049-1077), a commoner.
She was assassinated by the Janislaws order, because she couldn't provide an healthy heir.
Janislaws second wife was Adela von Holland(b:1061). She was the sister of Albrecht, the Duke of Holland.

Janislaw had many children. With Katarzyna he had 5 children. Two of them died early.
Zwinislawa (b:1067) was his first daughter who later married Mieszko Wlostowic, Duke of Greater Poland. Swietoslawa (b:1068) died when she was only 4 years old.
His third child Adelajda (b:1070) married a commoner.
Zygmunt (b:1071) his first son and the first heir to Janislaw lived only 17 years, he died suddenly in 1088 due to illness.
His second son Boleslaw (b:1074) died when he was only 3 years old.

With Adela he had 6 children. Bartosz (b:1078) his third son and eventually his heir. Wladislaw (b:1080) who also died young.
He also had three daughters with Adela, who all married men from his court: Anna (b: 1080), Dobrawa (b:1082) and Blanca (b:1085).
His last child was Lambert (b:1094) second heir to Janislaw.

Situation at the start:

Janislaw was a vassal to Archbishop Bogumil Jankowskie, who in his turn was a vassal to King of Poland Boleslaw II Piast

Titles:
Count of Lubusz (Polish, Catholic) income of 1 gold.

Poland1066.jpg

Lubusz was the most north-western county of the kingdom. To the north there ware pagans and in the west the
duchy of Brandenburg of the Holy Roman Empire.

His deeds:

In 1075 he convinced Archbishop Bogumil and his liege King Boleslaw II to attack the Wendish Pagans to the North.
He let the King battle the Wends and take Slupsk, while he took Stettin without even fighting the enemy.*

In 1077 The Pope called a Crusade to liberate Jerusalem from the Muslim joke. Poland did not participate in the early stages of the Crusade but joined in later.

Janislaw waited for a good opportunity to attack the pagans again. In 1082 when the Prussian HighChief died and his 7-year old son came to power was the perfect moment.
Again he convinced his liege and the King to the just of the war. He mislead the King again. Janislaw took Danzig fast while the King took Marienburg after he had to fight the Prussians.(The King gave Marienburg in 1087 to the Teutonic Order).

In 1085 Boleslaw went off on the Crusade to the Holy Land. Janislaw took his chance while the King was gone and went to war with the Prussian Pagans.
Janislaw took Sambia and Chelminskie and so ended the Prussian Chiefdom.

In 1089 Janislaw could finally claim the title of a Duke with help of the Pope**. He became the Duke of Pomeralia.

Janislaw1089.jpg

In 1091 war broke out with Yatvingians, lithuanian pagans. Janislaw managed to claim Scalovia for his own.

His high piety and the friendship with the Pope resulted in the excommunication of his rival, the King of Bohemia in 1094.***

In 1095 a year before his death he got into a big argument with King Boleslaw II about the excommunication of the King of Bohemia who was
one of the best friends of Boleslaw II. He died in 1096 due to illness in Danzig.
In the aftermath of death, his son and heir Bartosz claimed that he was killed by the King and claimed the Kingdom for his own!

-----------
* I got lucky there, I could start the siege and take Stettin while my King was fighting in Slupsk :)
** I was the Papal Controller :D
*** I ofcourse also claimed the title :)

Tnx Veldmarschalk :) well I wasn't as successful so far :)

A good beginning to be sure. Hope you enjoy AAR writing.

A good start to this one. Bartosz sounds very ambitious. It will be interesting to see whether his ambitions will be realised or whether he will fall. I'll definitely be cheering for him.

Dynasty de Charnekow

Bartosz I z Czarnkowa
(Latin: Bartolomaeus I de Charnekow)
King of Poland 1104-1109

Born: 9.8.1078, Lubusz, Kingdom of Poland
Died: 19.11.1109, Lubusz, Kingdom of Poland

Bartosz1100.jpg

Bartosz inherited his fathers Dukedom when he was 17 years old, soon to be 18.
He was Janislaws third son. His mother was Adela von Holland, sister of the Duke of Holland.

Bartosz was born in 1078 in Lubusz, at the time a small hill fort.
He was raised mostly by his mother and nannies as his father was constantly fighting Pagans.
When he was five years old he was sent as a fosterling to the King of Poland, there he learned the art of trade.
In 1088 his older brother Zygmunt died due to illness and Bartosz became the heir to the Duke of Pomeralia.

Bartosz was known at the time as an chaste and vengeful men. He claimed that the King of Poland Boleslaw II
killed his father and claimed the Polish throne. He was very ambitious but never happy and often depressed.

He was married twice, just like his father. His first wife was Gwenhwyfur Marthruful (b:1097), who died in labor.
His second wife was Donada Dunkeld (b:1080), a niece of Duncan King of Scotland.
Bartosz had two children, both sons. Bolko (b:1096) his heir with his first wife and Czcibor (b:1097) a bastard.

Situation at the start:

Vassal to the King of Poland, Boleslaw II Piast.

Poland1100.jpg

Titles:
Duke of Pomeralia
Count of: Stettin (Catholic,Wend,1), Danzig (Catholic,Wend,3), Chelminskie (Pagan,Prussian,2),
Sambia (Pagan,Prussian,2), Scalovia (Pagan,Lithuanian,0) and Lubusz (Catholic,Polish,2)

His deeds:

In 1095 Bartosz returned to Danzig from Krakow where he was a fosterling.

When his father died and he succeeded him in 1096, he promised he would avenge his father and blamed Boleslaw II as the responsible
for the death of Janislaw. He claimed that the King went mad and that he assassinated Janislaw.
He also fabricated an connection to the Piast family and claimed that the throne should be his!

But Bartosz knew that he couldn't take the King head-on. He would lose. So he waited for an opportunity and gathered friends.
He knew that delay in vengeance gives a heavier blow.

In 1098 Boleslaw was either unaware about the situation or he underestimated Bartosz and thought he couldn't pull off a Civil War.
He went on a 2nd Crusade to liberate Jerusalem.

6 years later when Boleslaw was in Syria fighting Muslims, Bartosz finally found help: the Duke of Mazovia, Wanko Bodzeta.
They both declared independence and war with the King. It was a Civil War.
The King, shocked by the events rushed back with his army to Poland. When he arrived at Krakow in August, most of his land was already conquered by the Rebels.
Bartosz defeated and killed the old King at Krakow in September. Vengeance was sweet but it had a price. After the Battle of Krakow, Bartosz's lover, Marshal Msciwoj Pomian died from battle wounds.

Bartosz1104.jpg

On 25 of October in 1104 Bartosz I was crowned as the King of Poland.
The second Polish dynasty.

Although Bartosz became the King, Poland was in a bad shape. It was torn apart by the war. And many counts ware independent.

On 19th of November 1109 , 5 years after the civil war,
Bartosz committed suicide in his castle in Lubusz.

His 13 year old son Bolko succeeded him.

thanks JMJ and stnylan :D
Well he did pretty well, crusaderknight : :) he never enjoyed his success doh. :(
thanks for posting everyone :D

now it's time for new goals I guess hehe
- Become an Emperor (the new Deus Vult trait)
by becoming the King of Bohemia, Hungary, Croatia and Lithuania (along with Poland of course :) )

-Create Crusader states like Kingdom of Jerusalem and Africa and so on.

-Put as many family members as possible on other thrones :)

ooh and a question : How can I make a screenshot of a character without that annoying half of a head in the left corner? :)

Wow, this is going very fast :)

ooh and a question : How can I make a screenshot of a character without that annoying half of a head in the left corner?

Only by editing the screenshot in Paint or something like that. It is annoying the same goes for the charactername in the red banner, it always looks unclear in a screenshot

Poor Bartosz. He didn't get to enjoy the fruits of his labour. Hopefully Bolko will have a successful reign thanks to Bartosz' efforts.

Well, time now to restore Poland to greatness.

A Very interesting first few decades. Let's hope a child king can hold the Kingdom together. Does the old king have any relatives who might be looking for vengence against you?

A child king straight after all the violence?

Well, good luck! Although sometimes child-kings grow up fantastic when they do grow up.

Thank you everyone for posting :)

I'll be posting Bolko's update today :)

@crusaderknight Indeed poor bartosz, so successful yet so unhappy

@stnylan well yes let's hope so. :D

@thrashing mad tnx, I remember your AAR I really liked it:) especially the videos from TW
you were an inspiration :)

@LeonTrotsky Well not direct relatives, (he died without a son and so did his brother Wladyslaw Herman) but his daughters married.
Of course there are also his cousins in Bohemia, the Premyslids ;)

@RGB Well believe it or not Bolko will have more violence in his life :)

Dynasty de Charnekow

Bolko I z Czarnkowa
(Latin: Boleslas I de Charnekow)
King of Poland 1109-1142
King of Bohemia 1116-1142

Born: 24.1.1096, Gdansk, Kingdom of Poland
Died: 6.1.1142, Krakow, Kingdom of Poland

Bolko1109.jpg

Bolko crowned King of Poland, 13 year old

Bolko was only 13 years old when he inherited the Polish Crown.
He was the only legitimate son of Bartosz.
His mother was Gwenhwyfur Marthruful (1078-1097) who died in labor a year after he was born.

Bolko was born in 1096 in Gdansk, the at the time capital of the Duke of Pomeralia.
Without a mother and his father's only son, he was mostly raised by Bartosz and nannies.

At the age of 13, his father committed suicide and Bolko became on orphan but also the King of Poland.
Raised by his father, Bolko became know in his youthful years to be as vengeful as his father.
And willing to complete what his father started and avenge his forefather. He was also known to be quite lustful for his age.
But most of all he was known to be Pragmatic. As a men with power he didn't have time to deal with social morality.
Just like his father he was ambitious and wanted to expend his family influence.
In his later years he became a Just and Merciful King.

Following the family tradition he married twice and assassinated his first wife.
The day after he became 16 he married Radica Vojislavjevic, a Serbian daughter of a Duke.
10 years later, still no children he ordered his Spy Master to assassinate Radica.
He then married Adele de Montgomery(b:1104), niece of the Duke of Canterbury.
With Adele he had 4 children: Konrad (b:1121) his heir. Mieszko (b:1122) the fierce rival of Konrad.
Katarzyna(B1123) who married Marshal Pomian and Dobieslaw (1128-1144) who died few days after his marriage.
Bolko also had a Bastard son Wladislaw (1119-1140) Who died in battle.

Situation at the start:

Poland1109.jpg

Titles:
King of Poland
Duke of Pomeralia
Count of: Stettin (Catholic,Wend,3), Danzig (Catholic,Wend,6), Chelminskie (Pagan,Prussian,3),
Sambia (Catholic,Prussian,5), Scalovia (Pagan,Lithuanian,1), Sudovia (Pagan.Lithuanian,0) and Lubusz (Catholic,Polish,4)

Poland was torn apart by the Civil war. Many counts ware independent. Others like the heir to the Piast, Vgdadu of Atholl
joined his relatives in the Kingdom of Bohemia. To the North The Pagan Kingdom of Finland is expending.
In the west The Holy Roman Empire becomes stronger and bigger with the day and in the East The Russian Princes joined the Byzantine Empire.

His deeds:

In 1110 Bartosz's Small Castles in Danzig and Stettin were finished.

In 1114 the year finally came. Bolko was 18 and ready to avange his forefather and retake the rest of the Kingdom.
He began with the Dukes of Plock and Lesser Poland. Both of them joined the kingdom without a big struggle.
After that he concentrated on the heir to Piast and his rival, Borivoj the King of Bohemia. Relative of the Piasts.
Bolko had a claim on Borivojs throne from his grandfather Janislaw. It was now time to take it!

The war lasted nearly three years, and Bolko got injured in the battle with Bohemians.
But the vengeance was complete. Bolko conquered Krakowskie, Praha and Liberec.
He made all the other independent counts his vassals.
On 25th on January 1116 he was crowned Bolko I King of Bohemia.

Bolko1116.jpg

He made his uncle, brother of Bartosz, Lambert Duke of Pomeralia and gave him land in Chelminskie.

The following years Bolko spent mostly in his bed, ill from the war wound.
He moved his capital to the old Piast capital in Krakow.

He also began to build up the country. In 1119 he build the first War Academy in Poland in Krakow.

In 1120 his trusted ally, the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold managed to excommunicate the King of Hungary.
Bolko convinced Leopold and the Pope that he would punish the Arpads and he claimed the Kingdom.

But Hungary was a strong country and in 1121 Bolko (recovered from illness and wounds) decided to pursue other interests.
Jerusalem was still not conquered, but the Fatimids were too strong. So he decided to go on a Crusade to Africa.
He declared war with Hammadids!
With an army 20,000 men strong he sailed for Tripolitana.

After 1,5 year he arrived with only 17,000 men left.
Bolko did manage to conquer Djerba and Tripolitana. After that he traveled to the Hammadids and conquered Benni Yanni, Bejaija and Biskra.
But his troops were tired after years of war and so he had sigh a peace treaty.
His failed Crusade really hurt his reputation.

Bolko gave all he conquered to the church and made many bishops in Africa.
He returned to Poland after 5 years of absence, again wounded, his reputation destroyed. And the Pope wasn't amused
as well. Bolko didn't conquer Hungary like he promised to him. And so Bolko lost the claim on Kingdom of Hungary.

Bolko didn't really care much and he decided to built up his economy and army again.

In 1126 the year he returned to Krakow, Stettin became a Polish province.
In 1128 Liberec joined the Polish culture and in Sambia a small Castle was finished.
In Stettin and Danzig harbors were built.

In the years 1134-38 Bolko built an Naval Harbor in Danzig and a Medium Castle in Krakow.
Danzig also became officially Polish.
Bolko claimed the Croatian throne in 1135 after Petar, their King insulted Bolko in a tournament.

The pope didnt forgot how Bolko treated him respect-less and excommunicated Bolko in 1140.
Bolko was furious about this and declared war on the Pope!
But after thinking it over he made peace with the pope before any other kings decided that Poland looked nice in the summer.

In 1141 Bolko decided that Galindia and Marienburg would be a good addition to the Kingdom and attacked the vassals to
the pagan King of Finland. Bolko didn't see the end to this war as he
died of old age on 6th of January 1142.

His 21 year old son Konrad succeeded him.

All in all it sounds a reign with its downs as well as its ups!

The relationship with the Pope sure was stormy...
