AFAIK there is a wish to use as much local variants as possible, where these are known. I'm pretty sure you'll see the Árpáds in :)

The Arpad dynasty is called just that in English, the Arpad. At worst the accents may get lost, but even that would be unlikely.

BTW, I haven't seen "Hapsburg" in any recent English text - it has almost always been "Habsburg" for pretty much the last century or so...

What have you been reading? I don't remember reading that anywhere...well maybe I have, but not enough to remember.

Sounds like somewhere someone made a spelling mistake that stuck.

My sophomore year in Highschool, my World Civ back referred to them as the Hapsburgs. When I saw the Habsburg spelling, I thought it was wrong.

I must confess that I had similiar experience, well not in HS but reading a book on my own. I was shocked but when I had another source of history, I found that it is correct.

Heh, we are talking about High School history texts? Yeah, real paragons of accuracy and scholarship those are...

I was talking about real history texts...

Well, neither Portugal nor the Afonsine dynasty existed in 1066 so... ;)

Yes, I really think we need double names for dynasties - one real and one for semi-literate American high school students with dyslexia

Hapsburg is an incorrect form. So is Emporer. Athiest. And Napolean :p
