Pray forgive me the use of some star trek shipsets and a few of their species, you may notice mention of the Dominion, the Bajorns and sure enough my pointy eared aliens have Vulcan ships and my Worf looking aliens fly Klingon warbirds........... I may also be abit of Warhammer 40k fan, has the Tor are shaped like the Tau and the Kroot are a free and independant empire..... not a geek at all. I may also draw a few bits from other AAR's i have had to give up due to modding issues causing crashing.

The United Nations of Earth

Earth:

Located in the Sol system, with a single moon commonly referred to as Luna, Earth is a beautiful green and blue jewel floating amid the gentle light of Solaris star. A continental world, the planet is criss-crossed by multiple biomes, with exquisite diversity of flora and fauna, varying widely in temperature from the frozen poles too the searing heat and humidity of the tropical zones and equatorial deserts. Having in the last two centuries undergone severe climatic shifts, the population has put great efforts into repairing the damage their forefathers had done, conservation and the reintroduction of species to the natural world have been key in this process.

The human species has claimed dominance over the planet for the better part of 20,000 years, rising up from out of the continent of Africa, spreading across the “Fertile Crescent” and outward. They have undergone exceptional cultural and technological growth in the years between their genesis and now; from the discovery of fire to breakthroughs in interstellar flight has taken 10,000 years at best, which compared to many species is an extraordinary sprint. But it has not been an easy journey, wars have proliferated the planet, killing millions in the first two global conflicts and costing hundreds of millions in the Third World War, when use of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons decimated the population and planet, climate change too caused horrific damage, with sea’s rising, extreme weather front and mass migrations of people. To add to it all, the ensuing global economic crash that followed on the back of the WW3, alongside a considerable wave of pandemics, left humanity reeling on its knees for nearly a half century.

20230603005231_1.jpg

To this day the planet still bares the scars of humanities long struggle toward unity. A gigantic garbage island floats out in the Pacific, nuclear radiation still causes problems in Scandinavia, Alberta wears the scars of war were a great crater caused by detonations during the last war is visible from space, across the planet slum districts and poverty are still endemic, despite the United Nations extensive efforts to stamp out inequality and injustice.

The current planetary government, has much to do, but it is hoped mining and energy extraction facilities spread out across the Sol system will help extinguish some of these problems and adventures in the surrounding systems may even bring fresh opportunities and prosperity to all off earths citizens to ensure everlasting peace. Physical money is now essentially a thing of the past, abolished along with the notion of profit morphing humanity into a cashless society. Such as it is citizens are awarded a monthly payment of credits, a form of currency perhaps for their work at varying scales, but every citizen receives an essential goods and food allowance, which they can feed themselves, buy furniture, clothing, equipment, miscellaneous items. Healthcare, education, and housing are also now controlled by the planetary government and all citizens have a right to them.

Based in the America’s, the United Nations has taken the place of Earths former political structures, a united global parliament drawing its members from global elections. Elections are held every four to five years, with delegates allocated based on population size from across the world. Political parties are no longer minor national things, they now form huge sweeping coalitions of minor, more national level groups that former together to make global election teams.

Based in New York, the United Nations mission has finally brought peace. Many of the nation states who formerly claimed dominance over the earth have now ceded their military, economic and legal structures to the UN’s control following extensive conflict, thus allowing for a single legal code, army, navy, and economic plan to drive progress forwarded. Whilst some nations are still reluctant to surrender their sovereignty completely, they have nevertheless accepted the authority of the UN’s elected, President and Cabinet Ministers and it is hoped in time the whole planet will accept total centralization of political authority.

The Sol system and its neighbouring stars:

For nearly five centuries now the Human species has gazed up at the stars and planets within the Sol system and beyond, from the basic assumptions of ancient astrologers, to the observations of Galileo, humanity managed early on to map and follow the movements of their neighbouring planets and in recent years space stations have been erected to harness the resources of many of the planetary bodies; mining stations and energy extraction facilities now float gently over Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the rest, solar capture points hover around the Sun, feeding their resources back to earth and a near constant stream of transporters move around the system laden with minerals, metal alloys and chemicals.

Even in ancient times the stars surrounding Solaris were known to mankind and legends even arose as to their origins, like the beautiful Cassiopeia, the bright Sirius and promising Alpha Centauri, later in their history with the deployment of the James Webb telescope, these systems were more clearly mapped, the number of planets and moons held within them, and others, becoming a feature of scientific certainty, although without actually visiting these worlds much was mere theory.

But now the UNS Valiant and the soon to be completed, UNS Discovery will venture out, travelling the hyper-lanes to study these worlds and their potential up close and in details. Not only thanks to incredibly advances in space flight and high-speed travel, but improvements in environmental suits, long range sensors, transport ships and scientific studies will allow teams of scientists to deploy on these worlds and map them in exquisite detail. It is even hoped, some of these worlds will be found to support life, or at the least show the capacity to sustain life with some effort, and currently several worlds are marked for immediate observation, where the conditions appear promising. Sirius and Alpha Centauri already offering a few potential candidates.

The Government of Howard Austin:
Elected via a resounding majority of nearly 73%, Howard Austin of San Francisco is a relatively young and ambitious man to be made First Minister of the United Nations of Earth. With somewhat capitalist leaning views, his election campaign was fought on the grounds of freedom, prosperity, and security for all. Promising to ramp up efforts to clean up the planet whilst boosting economic output, he has presented a positive vision for the future together with his team of Cabinet Ministers. Unfortunately, whilst his own vote share was significant, his actual party received only 56% of the total delegates within the United Nations Council, which may mean at times his more controversial reforms may take some considerable work to pass. Although he has stated he is a true believer and defender of democracy, he has during his election campaign made a number of proposals that may infringe on the current rights of citizens in the name of greater progress, the most controversial of which being the enforcement of eviction laws on slum housing across the planet as work progresses on modernising the housing stock and bringing it up to an accepted standard.

Whilst it is clear the old economic environment is in decline and profit driven business models have now given way to much more philanthropic teams and projects, nevertheless, with a man like Howard Austin, who has firm roots in the world of business it may take a little longer for the economic narrative of Earth to change. The oil giants and hydro-carbon companies have long since been put out of business, and the media whilst not censored, must follow strict lines of verification (no longer is truth allowed to come second to profit), in the America’s private weapons licenses are a thing of the past and the gun-lobby taken into complete government ownership, an international healthcare system controlled by the UN has also seen the fall of mega-pharma industries, the Banking market has also been practically abolished with the death of former currencies.. If Howard Austin, is to get the economy rebooting properly it will no doubt come from opening new forms of industry, new technological advances and perhaps even from new worlds and extra-terrestrial markets.

I'm always down to follow a Stellaris AAR!

Also, they do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Stealing species (and sometimes characters) from sci-fi franchises isn't frowned upon.

It looks like our new leader might have his work cut out for him with that divided government...

Also, I want to know more about this World War III... how bad was it?

Chapter One: A Brave New Start

Howard Austin:- His Private Apartment, New York City, North America, 05.01.2200

“Didn’t I tell you to go to bed?” Jacob walked into the bedroom, a broad smile on his face, “We are hardly going to get a moment over the next few days, you need your rest!” He stood behind Howard, placing his hands lightly on his shoulders, whilst he kept his eyes down on a data-pad, “It’s not every day you become the leader of a whole planet, for heaven’s sake!”

“I promised Caroline, I would look over the speech she has written” he tapped gently at a few keys, adjusting a line of text, “its never going to be perfect, but I really need it to strike the right note.” He sighed gently, taking a sip from his coffee, as Jacob leaned over and kissed him on the cheek, clearly not willing to get into a debate. “You go to bed, and I will come through in a little while, I promise.” Ten years they had been married now, and all things considered, Howard wasn’t sure if he could have ever completed the election campaigns world tour without his ‘better’ half.

Tomorrow, the eyes of the whole world would be on him, the weight of that fact resting heavily on his thoughts. He would take his oath of office before the whole General Assembly of the U.N, with delegates from every part of the globe gathered, dignitaries, officials, members of various citizen and military bodies would also be in attendance, it was crucial his speech hit the right chord.

His campaign advisors had encouraged him to plan a second world tour, this time not campaigning for votes but celebrating their victory, and whilst he had yet to make a formal decision it was widely known around his office staff no such tour would be forthcoming, as he planned to get straight to work, there was much to be done.

Howard Austin:- The United Nations General Assembly, NYC, North America, 06.01.2200

The whole assembly rose to its feet in applause as he finished his speech, waving to the crowd, Howard smiled down the dozens of cameras and records that were even now projecting his image to screens across the entire planet, from Time Square, to Beijing and St Petersburg, from Lagos to Sydney and Paris.

Turning momentarily, he waved up to the visitors’ balcony, where Jacob and their daughter, Amy stood beside his wider family, including his campaign team, an officiant of the Assembly handed him the flag of the United Nations of Earth, before the door to the rostrum opened and he was invited down to shake hands with his party members.

“Congratulations Howard” came a voice at the end of an extended arm, “Well done Sir” came another, “Excellent speech Mr Austin”, the faces more blurs than aught else, men and women bedecked in the dress of dozens of cultures, a rainbow assembly of Earths now united people.

“This way First Minister if you please” a security officer called, directing him toward the entrance to the Chamber. The schedule today was hectic, the swearing in was over, his acceptance speech delivered, now the work would begin; their were Cabinet Ministers to appoint, judicial positions needed reviewing, more media appearances to be made, before a ball that evening at the former home of the President of the United States, the White House, now a museum, heavily refurbished following a major drone bombardment during the last global conflict.

Making his way up the long aisle of delegates, shaking endless hands and receiving continuous congratulations, Howard finally left the Assembly Chamber, ushered along by security officers to the temporary office of Abbas Al’adat, newly appointed Governor of Earth, where official command protocols would be put in place. The First Minister was after all to be appointed Commander-and-Chief of Earths armed forces, with final authority over nuclear armaments, the armed forces, and the newly established Space fleet.

Abbas Al’adat:- The Planetary Government Offices, Virginia, North America, 09.01.2200

“Welcome First Minister” Abbas Al’adat extended his hand, waiting as he had been at the bottom steps of the Government building to await his new boss, the two men where long standing acquaintances and they shared a similar vision for the future, “Your team sent me your requirements and your official office has been fitted out for you exactly!”

“Lets not worry about things like that right now Abbas” Howard grasped his hand tightly, a broad smile beaming as they both turned to the expectant media contingent, on the steps behind them the official cabinet stood, applauding their leaders arrival. A few moments passed, some pictures taken, and a couple of questions were answered to the journalists, “Shall we go inside?” Howard offered the Governor, directing that he should lead the way, “We have much to discuss and little time to discuss it in!”

Turning and ascending the steps, Abbas leaned in slightly, “I have scheduled a number of meetings with your team over the next few days, to meet with leaders of the international community” he paused, “I am afraid your immediate schedule will be quite rigorous.”

Howard laughed, “I do hope some of these meetings can coincide with dinner? I have had hardly any time to eat properly this last week!” he offered a cheeky grin, pausing on the step for a moment, “If you could arrange for a meeting with the delegation from Japan, to coincide with lunch, I haven’t had the time to visit a good sushi bar in quite a long time!”

Howard Austin:- The First Ministers Offices, Virginia, North America, 09.01.2200

“Take a seat my friend please” Howard indicated to the main chair, a group of sofas and other chairs littered the office for the cabinet to been seated. The First Minister himself, sat down in the main chair behind the desk, a beautifully carved and ornate piece sent from Versailles as a gift to the First Minister from the European Assembly, a picture of his husband and their daughter from their last vacation was the only piece of personal décor, he had sent ahead.

The office itself was furnished to perfection, the room littered with artworks taken from the various cultures of the world, carefully selected by himself and his team to ensure fair representation of earths various periods and its diverse history; masks from Africa, a jade buddha on a plinth from Thailand, paintings from European masters, a bust of Plato sent from the Deputy Minister of Greece founders of democracy.

“First things first Abbas” Howard took his seat, picking up a data-pad, its facial recognition activating it instantly, “I assume you received the proposals I sent over to your office the other day?”

“Regarding the clearing of the Pacific Garbage Patch?” he was handed his own pad by a waiting attendant, “I did indeed and I have commissioned the Minister for the Environment to invest in waste reclamation machinery, so we can begin operations before the end of the year” he paused, “I read over the U.N’s report on marine ecology, international shipping and how it will be affected by the clearance and it all seems very positive!”

20230603005302_1.jpg

“Perfect” the First Minister sounded incredibly enthusiastic, swiping the page from the pad, “I look forward to the feed-back report in due course” he swiped up another issue, pressing the button that ensured all the pads in the room were on the same page, he looked around momentarily, seeking out the appropriate Minister, “Diana, you were going to look into the mining survey recently done on Titan?”

“Already on the way First Minister” she smiled at him, a stunning women, with dark eyes and darker hair, her faced marked with the ancestral patterns of her Māori tribe, “The previous government already had the equipment in production and the UNS Orinoco received her orders this morning to begin installation of the Triton mineral extraction orbital, the crew I am told will be ready to depart, Monday!” She swiped her own data-pad to the side, bringing up a series of images of Sol’s planetary bodies and resource details, “If you will authorise it, I want to place orders for further orbital extractors to be in production immediately” she smiled at him gently, they had been long time political allies, “I know its not all about stats with you, but the potential impact on employment figures that these could have will be a vote winner for sure!”

Howard burst out into an unexpected laugh, “We have literally only days ago won an election Diana, trust you to have your eyes on the next one!”

“With respect” she short back, amused but focused, “we have a lot of work to do, we need two terms at least to do even half off it, the next election may as well be tomorrow as far as I am concerned, counting votes is everything!”

Admiral Riya Potti:- The Ministry of Defence, Nevada, North America, 14.01.2200

Nearly two centuries ago the massive compound that now formed the Ministry of Defences main base was a word shrouded in myth, used by conspiracy theorist, xeno-enthusiasts, sci-fi lovers the world over; Area 51.

A one-time military research facility, where wreckage from recovered alien vessels had been studied and reverse engineered to help in the war effort of WW3, the base was now at the heart of the international defence web, receiving detailed communications from across the planet and from various sensor arrays fitted to the Sol systems orbital platforms. Nothing moved in the Sol system that the Nevada base and its commanders didn’t know about, and it was here deep down in the vaults that proof off alien life had long been preserved and kept from the view of the public. At the height of the last global conflict it had been a target off serious military strikes; missiles, espionage, drones and all out assaults via paratroopers, it had been considered by many of the opposing powers that if they could access the tech, they suspected was held within perhaps they could swing the conflict in their own favour.

Unlike the reception at the Government offices in Virginia, there would be no fanfare or journalists attending today’s meeting, indeed the Minister for Defence, Riya Potti had insisted that the meeting be known to only the bare minimum and only the most modest delegation had been allowed to follow the First Minister.

The regime has ambitious plans, it seems.

Area 51 actually had aliens? That's actually rare in AAR writing here. What kind of aliens were these? Does the general public know about it?

I enjoy seeing new Stellaris AARs show up, because it's a really fascinating platform.

Also interesting to see the Star Trek stuff thrown in. Looking forward to more!

Chapter One continued.
First Minister Howard Austin:- The Ministry of Defence, Nevada, North America, 14.01.2200

Descending ever deep down, the vaults below Area 51 had been carved over the last two centuries into a huge web-like network off interconnected caverns, strewn with laboratories, vaults and other such rooms, with teams of scientists and security officers employed under the most topic secret terms, anyone found breaching their terms of employment being subject to immediate detention and a private trial. Few if any of those who broke their terms were ever seen again in public and the rare few who did, had their reputations ruined beyond repair and their sanity constantly questioned.

“I cannot stress enough First Minister, the sensitivity of what we have down here” she looked over her shoulder, to the two aides behind them, the elevator began to slow as it reached its destination, “beyond this point your aides will have to stay in the holding area”, the doors to the elevator opened, and a brightly lit and immaculate room opened up, five security officers, armed to the teeth stood to attention.

“As you like Admiral” the First Minister waved his aides away, to a seating area off to the side as he and the Admiral made for the next door, “I have high expectations, I can tell you” he laughed, though his humour fell utterly short.

The Admiral scanned her pass to the door, a female robotic voice demanding finger prints and retinal authentication, “Trust me Minister, you haven’t set your expectations high enough!” And with that another door opened, into another chamber, both stepped inside, and the doors shut. Riya stepped up to a control pad, inputting a brief code, before inserting yet another security clearance card into a wall-reader, as bright red beam of light scanned her facial features.

Moments passed, and the Admiral straightened her uniform, for all the computers ability, the system in place was even now feeding all off her data through the building to a manned control centre, where a site supervisor would check all her data before the doors could open. Huge metallic clangs suddenly rang out, gears whirled, and electronic bleeps covered the room, alarm lights sounding as the doors began to open!

“If Jurassic Park had this tight a security they would have never been able to make a movie” Howard laughed peering through the door, looking vaguely alarmed, a dimly lit room stretching out ahead “Perhaps you have one of the X-men?” the lack of a reply from Admiral Potti, made it clear she had no knowledge of pre-WW3 popular culture.

Lights suddenly burst into life, their beams covering a long ramp down from the door, the chamber was empty off furnishing and staff members, except for four tall cylindric tubes at the centre of the room, they were filled with clear fluids, bubbling away, illuminated from below and in each one what appeared to be humanoid bodies floated. The Admiral gestured toward them, letting the First Minister lead the way.

‘What in the name of God are those things’ his mind raced ahead off itself, ‘this is incredible! It changes everything, absolutely everything!’ He moved down the ramp, coming up close to the first three cylinders, a sudden clicking sound caught his attention and he turned to meet it, mounted weapons platforms suddenly fixed on the cylinders from all over the room.

“Don’t worry they won’t fire, they are just a precaution!” the Admiral came slowly up beside him, gazing upon the floating figures. “You see now why we have the measures that we do?”

The First Minister did not answer for a long while, gazing up at the three bodies, he couldn’t help but run a hand along the thick glass-like surface, looking down at the tubes base, he noticed they must have been nearly a foot thick, he turned to the Admiral stunned, “They are human!”

Floating in these first three tubes, were the bodies of what was very clearly two human males and a human female, their bodies however, heavily augmented by mechanical implants and alterations, two had their eyes replaced with mechanical devices, one had a multi-tooled hand, and all were covered in heavy armoured plates.

“Believe me, they look human, but any trace of that has long since gone!” she pressed a few buttons on a data-pad and handed it to the Minister, files containing all the information they had on the three cyborgs, “their internal organs are off human origin, indeed from DNA sampling we can even trace their ancestral history” she stopped in front one of the tubes, a female, heavily augmented was suspended in the fluids, “She apparently originates from the Middle East, her genetic sequence suggesting her ancestors came from southern Turkey during the late stages of the Ottoman Empire” the Admiral moved along stopping at the next, “his DNA comes from south Africa in the mid-14th century” pointing at the next an last cyborg, “His ancestors were European, and probably were removed around the 12th century!”

“Removed?” the First Minister scanned his eyes over the tablet, “what do you mean removed?”

106882f2e0733a9e29d817bff59135db.jpg

Riya clicked more keys, bringing up a map off the earth, three date-stamps placing themselves upon it, “From what we have gathered and suspect, they have all grown off world, in a separate human population, suggesting their ancestors were abducted over an extended period of time and taken elsewhere!” She clicked another icon, and a tiny, insect looking robot appeared on the screen, “It’s hard to date them effectively” she sighed “their blood is infected with these micro-bots, constantly repairing their implants, regenerating tissue and trying to revive them, these three could be a hundred years old at least!”

“Where were they found?” Howard was baffled, his eyes fixed on them, rather than the data-tab.

“The three of them were the only survivors of a crash, back in late 2154 just south of the Rockys” she brought up the crash site details, “there were eight of them aboard their vessel, but these were the only ones we could preserve, the others were too seriously damaged!” She clicked yet another icon and a fully automated humanoid shape appeared on the screen, with a single eye, “Two off these were found at the crash site” she spun the image, “Our team theorises, that these three are the half-way stage between us and these droids, fully automated, fully integrated and with only the bare minimum of biological matter left behind!”

Howard circled the tubes slowly, looking them up and down, they all stood at least 6 feet in height and their muscles tone was considerable despite the additional mechanics, “Do we know where they came from?”

“No” the Admiral moved to the fourth tube, “what we do know is their ship emitted a long range signal blast, out to the Galactic west” she paused to explain, “we couldn’t break the code, but it was picked up by a number of probes circling Jupiter at the time!”

Admiral Riya Potti:- The Ministry of Defence, Nevada, North America, 14.01.2200

“This little one is even more interesting than the other three” Riya stopped and peered up at the alien suspended in the cylinder before her, “If you think they pose questions” meaning the cyborgs “she poses even more!” The little being floated at less than quarter the size of the other three, her tiny, pixie like shape bobbing gently in the fluids of the tube. The First Minister moved to stand before her, looking ever so curious and inviting the Admiral to continue.

“She was recovered from a Mayan tomb, one dated nearly 3,500 years ago” the Admiral tapped her data-tab, “She was founded by grave robbers in a sarcophagus they had opened inside one of their temples” she clicked more icons, “As you can see, the locals called her Hacamo’eleca and worshiped her as a deity, fallen from the stars!”

“She is alive?” the First Minister’s eyes fixed on the alien’s form, his eyes growing wide. The data-tablet he was looking at, displayed life signs.

bfeb918710bf786f4c62b22981a7e787.jpg

“She was alive when we found her, and still is, she is just heavily sedated” the Admiral walked around the tube cautiously, “the men who disturbed her thankfully didn’t need paying off, as so the story goes, she drove them mad, they thought she was a demon!” The Admiral clicked open a series of stats, “The team we sent to recover her lost thirteen members just trying to sedate her. If you watched the recordings” she clicked the videos open, “She possesses telekinetic and telepathic abilities the like of which you can hardly imagine are possible, and if she had been in that box as long as the tests say, she is nearly 4,000 years old!”

“Surely not? There are tree’s as old as that here, but as if anything so small could live so long!” he seemed to have missed the main point, looking over the video, the scene playing showed her lifting two men up into the air with just a wave off her hands before smashing them against the walls of the ancient temple! Her age was impressive, her “abilities” stunning, but the implication of her interfering with ancient human development, was earth shaking.

“If you consider how long she has been here, it is possible that she helped the Mayans develop in their earliest attempt at civilisation, what their local historians call Gods, could just as likely be more of her kind!”

Matthew Pike:- Presidential Residence, Washington DC, North America, 20.01.2200

Straightening his tie, Matthew waited patiently in the foyer of the First Ministers Office, his hands shook ever so slightly, he had met the Minister previously at the Institute of Engineering but never had he imagined he would be called to a private meeting, nor did he have the faintest idea what it was about. He grabbed a cup of water from the fountain, gazing for a moment on the opposing busts of Sir Isaac Newton, the man who discovered gravity and Galileo Galilei, the father of modern astronomy.

“The First Minister will see you now” the doors of the private office opened, the official leaned in, whispering into his ear “There is no need for formality, it’s not the done thing.” Moments later he was ushered into a beautiful suite, the flag off a united earth hanging from the wall, priceless piece of art, paintings, vases, miniature statues, from around the world placed carefully around the room.

“Matthew, Good to see you” the First Minister strode across the room, his hand out stretched, a huge smile on his face “I hope you weren’t waiting too long” he turned, giving a nod to his officials to leave by another door, “Please take a seat” he moved towards his own seat behind the desk as the room emptied. “Sorry I had to send the chopper for you, but I have a busy day scheduled, and I couldn’t risk you getting delayed in traffic!”

“To be honest Minister the chopper was less off a shock than the invite to speak with you” he smiled, “Though I am glad to be here” he added, not wanting to sound ungrateful.

“You didn’t expect to be called?” Howard laughed, “I take it you don’t keep a keen eye on your mail then?” He reached across the table and picked up a data-tablet, pressing his thumb against the reader, “Perhaps give that a glance” Howard smiled, “You may wish you had read it sooner!”

‘CAPTAIN! THEY ARE MAKING ME A CAPTAIN! HOLY FUCK!’ Nausea rose in his stomach, his hands shaking more, tears forming in his eyes and his heart began pounding, “Your making me fucking captain?”… He stalled, whipping the tears, “You’re making me the captain of a spaceship? Is this some sort of joke!”

281990_20230806202543_1.png

“Did you have someone else in mind?” Howard smiled again, he was famous for his warmth an generous nature, reaching across the table to take his pad back, “You helped design her and you have overseen her construction from the start, even when she was just sketches on a pad, I can’t think of anyone who knows that ship and is capabilities better!”

Matthews eyes welled even more, “I don’t know what to say!” a stunned silence came, “I didn’t even vote for you” he chuckled.

“I am after a scientist Captain Pike, not a politician so who you voted for is no concern off mine or anyone else” he reached into his desk and pulled out a small box, sliding it across the desk, inside a small lapel badge, with the insignia of a United Earth, “Your mum, I am told helped to develop the FLT tech!”

“She did yeah, Annette Pike” he picked up the box, running his fingers gently over the badge, he thought a moment, “I assume a crew is being selected and we have our mission brief!”

“Ha! That’s the spirit” Howard slapped his hands together, getting up from his chair, an moving to shake the Captains hand, the Scientific Institutes and the Admiralty are haggling over the crew details as we speak” with that the Captain stood, aware the meeting was ending. “I will have your mission details sent to you, obviously we will arrange for you a secure contact box and all your security codes will need up grading” the door opened and the next off the day’s audiences stood waiting, “I think before you go home and pack, a trip to Nevada is going to be necessary” the Captain looked a little puzzled, and Howard nodded to his waiting guests making it clear he couldn’t explain to much, “Speak with reception and they will arrange your transport, I think when you get there you will see with abundant clarity why going there first is a must!”

It looks like there are far more things in Heaven and Earth... Does this mean that aliens were abducting humans for years (possibly decades or even centuries?) without any government's knowledge? How should humanity respond to that?

Also, the other alien raises... many possibilities. Successful negotiations with her could gain Earth allies... and failed negotiations could have horrific consequences. She's psionic, right? I wonder if any humans will begin to develop skills like hers...

Chapter 2; Noises in the Void

Howard Austin: The Presidential Suit at the Elysee Palace, France, Europe, 27.01.2200

Howard lay on the bed in his room, it was a gigantic thing if there ever was one, he was told it was antique, dating back nearly 500 years and was once used by one of the dozen King Louis’ who had sat on the French throne before the revolutionary era. He was catching up on reading the reports that had come through from his main office earlier that day; there was a positive update on the Pacific Garbage clearance project, another report had focused on the orbital mining stations currently being installed of Titan and the one he was currently skimming over, was a brief scientific paper on the sub-glacial oceans of Jupiter’s moon, Ganymede.

There was a brief nock at the door, before the First Minister could sit up and answer, his aide Justine was already in the room, “You need to see this boss, it just came through the communications office!” The excitement in Justine’s voice, someone known for his cool-headed approach, made Howard jump up off the bed, a data-tablet being handed to him.

281990_20230812164239_1.png

He took a moment to flick through the pages. “Do we have any idea what they are?” The report read, that a series of sub-space communications had been intercepted by a construction crew working on the edge of the Alpha Centauri hyper-lane entry point. In the hours following the signal two more transmissions had been intercepted emitting from the Sirius Star and Epsilon Eradani systems, it was assumed they were in response to the initial call.

“Not a clue, they say the signal was on a constant loop, faint at first but traceable” the aide, stood beside Howard, sweeping the pads pages down to another report, “Long range sensors have noted they come from objects in orbit of various moons and planets, rather than originating for them.”

The First Minister pondered a moment, glancing over the brief intel, this added serious complications to his plans, “Get me a line to Admiral Potti as soon as possible” he paused, looking at the clock on the wall, estimating the time difference, “She maybe at dinner, but I want to speak to her as soon as is physically possible” he paused again, looking out the window over the beautiful lights of Paris at night, “We will need to contact Captain Pike also, the Valiant was scheduled to leave for the Alpha Centauri system at the weeks end, but that may be unwise.”

Howard Austin: The Department of Science sub-branch , France, Europe, 29.01.2200

Having sat listening to each of the members around the table, the First Ministers attention was drifting off slightly and he gazed out through the window. On the skyline the Eiffel Tower, damaged during the Third World War rose up over all Paris once again, huge scaffolds and cranes flocked around it, as the repair work was on going.

The attendee’s were discussing the best ways to investigate the recent signals picked up from the surrounding systems without endangering a whole ships crew or potentially starting a war with an unknown alien species, at present the plan was most favoured was to send a specially commissioned scout jet, fitted with the most basic FLT-drive possible into the Alpha Centauri system to get a visual on the objects and potentially open communications.

Andre Laurent, one of the most gifted pilots in the new fighter program had been flown in this morning from his home in Toulouse, his time off cancelled in order to attend the meeting. It was considered that the size of the objects that had been picked up, would allow a small object like a scout ship to hopefully pass unnoticed.

“If your happy Minister” the Head of Engineering at the Department suddenly interrupted, Howards wandering mind, “all we need is your thumb print and we can get the order in place, the proto-type jet is already in storage!”

The First Minister looked around the room, his eyes focusing on Lieutenant Laurent, “Who knows what your going to see up their my friend” he smiled, though it was a cold grin, “Be careful and get yourself back home soon!” And with that, Howard pressed his thumb firm against the reader.

Admiral Riya Potti:- The Ministry of Defence, Nevada, North America, 03.02.2200
The Admiral peered closely at the holo-projection floating before her, an aide twisting the blue-print around on his pad and causing the holo-design to pivot around in the projector. The ship on display was the new Beta class, Corvette, submitted to the Admiralty over the last few days.

“It’s a decent design” the Admiral paced gently around the projector, “It should make the perfect partner to the Alpha class” she tapped on her own pad, bringing up the ships schematics and fire-power onto the projection, “Austin has given us permission to put them into immediate production!”

281990_20230812164327_1.png

“I will send the production orders up to the construction stations before the end off the day, but my main concern is do we have the crews available to man them?” the aide, Yin Lee Tao, was always thinking of the difficulties, planning ahead and looking at long term complications. “I assume you have someone in mind also to command the fleet?”

The Admiral moved from the door, “You get those orders sent and I will deal with the problem of finding people to crew them.” The electronic doors fired open, “As for who’s going to command them, lets first hope they are not going to be needed” she turned back to Yin Lee, “but if worst comes to worse, I will be commanding them myself” and with that she exited the room.

Andre Laurent, Scout Jet, In orbit of Proxima Centauri B, Alpha Centauri System, 15.02.2200

Laurent disengaged the main thrusters, inputting a series off commands to bring his little ship back into the orbit of Proxima Centauri B, he had to compensate momentarily for a spike in the gravity well of the Proxima star. Over the course of the last few days, he had guided the little ship out of its orbit and allowed it to float in the clouds of dust and gas between Proxima and the systems main binary stars, using the erratic readings put out by these clouds to mask his own presence.

Todays jaunt had been his last, the supplies that his little vessel could carry were running out and its life-support systems where reaching their limit. He had made three runs out into the system and had gathered extensive readings. The signals that had been picked up had now been found to belong to a huge mining ship, that was in orbit in the system, it was supported by a series of smaller drone ships and they together were protecting a station on the far side of the system that was giving off considerable energy readings, scans had been unable to detect any signs of life or biological material, thus it was assumed these ships were completely automated, hence the repetition of the signal received and the failure to receive any response.

281990_20230812164257_1.png

Captain Matthew Pike:- The Bridge of the UNS Valiant, Sol System, 26.03.2200

“CAPTAIN ON THE BRIDGE” an automated female voice engaged, “SHIP COMMAND CODES TRANSFERRED” Captain Pike made for the Captains chair, lights bloomed, control panels flashed into life, “FULL SHIP SYSTEMS ENGAGED AND CHIEF COMMAND CODES INSTALLED” at the computers instigation, the Chiefs of each department were suddenly given full access to the ships controls “ENGINES ENGAGED” a momentary vibration made the ship, shudder as her engines buzzed into life.

Captain Pike, inhaled deeply and straightened his uniform as he took his seat, it was not lost on him that despite the honour bestowed on him by becoming Captain, this was a day that would go down in the history of mankind, every single media screen, news channel and broadcaster was at this very moment, fixed watching the first ever inter-system flight.

“Ensign Jones isn’t it?” the Captain leaned forward, he was unfamiliar with the faces of his crew though he had taken pains to try an learn those of his bridge crew, handpicked as they were by the Institute of Science and the Admiralty. The ensign responded in the affirmative, “I trust your ready for this” he smiled, “since we have the whole planet watching lets try for a smooth departure aye?”

“Yes Sir!” the Ensign turned to face his station. “Engaging the main viewer, impulse engines at the ready, and permission has been granted from main port, awaiting your command, Captain.”

“Disengage docking clamps Ensign and begin full departure protocols” the Captain stood up, his shoulders back and his face beaming, “Take a moment people, today you become part of history” he looked around at his teams excited faces, “You here will be alongside those first people who discovered fire, the sailors who discovered the new world, the founders of the industrial revolution, be proud of what you have achieved and what we are about to do!” He strode down and grip the ensign by the shoulder, “Set course for the Barnard Star system” he turned back to his chair, “Engage when ready!”

And with that, cisterns sounded, docking clamps disengaged and the Valiant gently lurched in reverse, pivoting gently as she responded to her commands, “CO-ORDINATES ACCEPTED, SETTING COURSE TO BARNARD STAR!”

Chapter 3: Noises in the House

Rep. for Kenya, Eva Ologo, The United Nations Chamber, NYC, North America, 06.04.2200

The meeting had been in session for nearly three hours and still there was no clear sign of which side was winning the debate, though passions where high on both sides of the Chamber, the First Minister was expected to address them later that date, though currently one of the Representative for Greece, Izakiel Tsparis was giving an lengthy sermon on the virtue of democracy, his key point seeming to be that no decisions could be made that did not reflect the views of the public with near complete agreement. What he clearly didn’t realise was a global referendum was one thing the security council would not allow, she after all being a currently sitting member of that Council had spent the last few days gauging the mood of her colleagues.

281990_20230812164506_1.png

The proposal put forward was that more resources should be handed over in the coming years budget to the Ministry of Defence in order to expand both earths fleet and land forces, with the funds being moved from Earths health and social projects. The more radical voices claimed that Earth needed a military capable off launching offensive wars beyond its own system meaning more resources to recruit more soldiers and to improve their equipment, others argued faster, stronger and bigger ships would be need, on the opposite side of the Chamber, the Xeno Protection Alliance, had been formed from splintered Xenoist parties, arguing that to take an aggressive stance toward potential alien life stood in contradiction of the Constitution set down after the Third World War.

281990_20230812164507_1.png

Her own grouping, the Freedom Alliance, the largest faction in the United Nations, argued a much more balanced approach, encouraging greater resources to the military but with the clear understanding that use of those forces should be given into the hands of the political class, that the First Minister, as Commander-and-Chief, should have the final decision on the deployment and use of those forces, rather than the military command. In their view, the main cause of WW3 had been the steady drift into militarisation and armament.

Rep Hywel Griffith, The United Nations Chamber, NYC, North America, 07.04.2200

The vote tally screen began ticking, votes in favour or against the resolution suddenly registering as members from across the Chamber, representing the entire planetary community began to cast their electronic ballot.

The First Minister had spoken the previous evening, at some length on the importance of maintaining the separation of powers laid down by the revised global constitution after the last conflict, whilst encouraging members to reflect on the need to protect and defend planet earth itself from potential dangers they may face from unknown quarters, he had claimed to have seen tangible proof that indeed their were dangers to be found in space, who according to intel provided a direct threat to the people of Earth.

Over the past few hours intense negotiations had taken place, led by the First Ministers team of aides, supported by Governor Abbas’ Ministers, inviting dozens of members whose voting intentions where unclear. Concessions had been made and adjustments to the budget had been needed, the European nations had suffered bitterly during the last conflict as had much of North Africa, they were in desperate need of investment and recovery packages which had been promised but never delivered. But now a resolution had been come too, and looking up at the tally, Hywel noted the steady ticking of votes in favour of the more moderate resolution now put before the chamber.

CAPTAINS LOG:- STAR DATE - 01.05.2200, UNS VALIANT, BARNARDS STAR SYSTEM

“History has been made, and our ship and crew have arrived safely in the system named Barnards Star. The jump was a little bumpier than we anticipated, but I have our engineering and navigation teams already at work ensuring our next jump will be smoother, Chief of Engineering, Julian Mavue assures me it is within his team’s ability. I wish my mother could have been here, she after all was one of the leading researchers on the original hyperdrive team.

The crew seems excited to get to work and already we have identified several points of interest, were we hope to focus out attentions, though I have given orders to enter orbit of the first planet in the system. Long range sensors suggested that it was a possible place to seek out life, but long-range scans have yet to show us anything to match that assumption, I do hope some of those who theorised over its potential will not be to be disappointed and perhaps what we find there, will give them more to look over.

My First Officer, one Amelia Leonese, seems a fine choice, though she appears a little to vocal and head-strong for my liking, nevertheless, her credentials are exceptional. If she however, had seen what I saw in Nevada, I doubt she would show the same enthusiasm for wandering amid the void of space as she does currently, I only hope during our studies, we do not encounter the same beings as are held in the vaults on earth.”

Away-team Chief, Loretta Scott, Barnards Star I, Barnard Star System 11.07.2200

“LIFE SUPPORT LEVELS AT 35%” the space suits internal computer sounded, it was pre-programmed to provide a near constant update once its oxygen levels had fallen below 50%.

Loretta checked her other stats on the helmet display, levels of gravity, distance from their shuttle pod, solar wind speed and radiation levels, heart rate etc, and all were at just above expected levels, though she could feel her suit beginning to become increasingly heavy and the air she breathed was beginning to thin as the suit automatically adjusted the amount of oxygen supplied against the missions duration time limit.

She and her small away team, were walking along a shallow ravine, its edges curving up gently and showing signs of erosion, she tapped her comm device, “Marcus make sure you get those samples packed up and sealed properly, I don’t want any chance at contamination” looking out off her visor, she noted the thumbs up off her team mate, squatting a few feet away, scratching samples of the ravines bed into the appropriate tubes and placing them in an sealed box. They had sampled all across the planet over the last few weeks, orbital scans, geometric surveys and the such like, leading them to believe that some three to four thousand years ago perhaps, this rocky world had once supported liquid water, just like Mars did back home.

281990_20230812164605_1.png

This was at least her fourth time on the planets surface and she had to confess to herself, the pride she felt had not lessened with familiarity, after all not only was she one of the first humans to ever leave the Sol system, she was also now one of few humans to have ever set foot on an alien world. As a little girl she had looked up at the night sky, from her home in Michigan, dreaming off what it would be like to walk amongst the stars, her mum and dad, devoted to their religion had always said, if anyone ever ventured beyond their own system, they would no doubt be able to say they had walked with God in the Gardens of Heaven, but right now, on this dusty, dark and empty planet, she had to laugh at how far it seemed, this was from what her mum had described heaven to be like.

Just over the rim off the small ravine, shards of light were beginning to break, “dawn” was coming and where they were stood would soon be basking under the light of Barnards Star.

She tapped her comm badge again, “Come on guys lets wrap it up and make for the shuttle, the Captain will not be impressed if I am late for my morning briefing!”

Howard Austin:- His Private Residence, Virginia, North America, 22.07.2200

Jacob and Howards’ mum were laying the table for dinner, at the end of the garden, a dozen or so members of Howards private team were sipping wine or chatting amongst themselves, Representatives and funders of the First Ministers own party seated all around, kids ran everywhere completely innocent of the powerful men and women who surrounded them.

His own daughter Amy was busy taking charge of her little gang as they tried to corner their dog, a Great Dane named Bo, who had been gifted to them by the Representative of Germany a year ago, he was striking up and making a fine dog, though he certainly did a good impression of being daft.

Diana stood suddenly beside him, a glass of brandy in her hand, she smiled, offering him a cheers, “I never understand how people can drink champagne, to many bubbles and not enough kick!”

“If you ever have my job you will understand” he laughed, nocking his glass against hers, turning to the happy view playing out in his garden, Diana looked at him confused, “At any moment I could get a call to make a decision that will affect the history of humanity” he sipped his drink a little, “Champagne is just nice enough to take the edge away and weak enough too not robbed me off my senses and start a war on a whim!”

She laughed allowed, hardly able to control her chuckles, “Honestly darling, you need to relax!” She stopped a serving passing by grabbing a brandy from the tray and passing it to the Minister, “Live a little, get drunk, take the edge off!” She turned herself to the garden, watching Caroline Healy, the Communications chief pushing her current lover, Jack Monroe into the pool!

“If you knew what I knew” he took a big swig on the brandy she had given him, “Besides I find as much work as I have to do here my mind is almost always on the crew of the Valiant, miles from home, wandering in space and digging on empty worlds” he paused, “I worry for them!”

“Worry about the elections at the end of the year, that’s something worth worrying about” she moved down the steps onto the lawn, “lets eat, spend some time with your family and we will sit down tomorrow an look at the campaign format” Howard looked frustrated but he followed, and she continued, “If we don’t win the seats we need, the First Minister or not you will manage to get nothing done!”

I wonder what these "fairies" are...

Earth is dividing itself into factions. Hopefully that doesn't end in warfare.

A new planet that could be colonized, huh? Let's see how that affects politics.

I wonder if the xenophilic policy will survive First Contact.

Chapter 3 Continued

Caroline Healy: The United Nations Main foyer, NYC, North America, 01.01.2201

Cameras focussed in, journalist crowded round shouting out their questions, security officers trying to keep the public further back.

‘Well this looks like its going to be a lively one’ she thought to herself, stopping to check her hair was tidy in the reflection to her side, a member of her staff fixing a microphone down her inside jacket. It was nearly time to open the session, ‘Let’s hope we don’t have any disasters aye’ she took in a deep breath before striding out up to the waiting lectern. Composing herself, she took a sip of water, scanning the crowd for sympathetic faces.

“Ladies and gentlemen, if we could please have a little quiet, I know many off you have a lot of questions to ask and we all have busy schedules ahead” a dull silence fell across the foyer. “Yesterdays results were an incredible endorsement off our current program, with over 60% off all votes cast being for the Freedom Alliance, we now possess a significant global mandate to push ahead with our plans and I know I speak not only for our Caucus, but also for First Minister Austin when I say, we wish to give a huge thank you to all off those whom have lent us their votes this time around, those who have voted for us consistently and those who may have voted for our parties for the first time.” Suddenly a wave of voices rose as journalists moved to ask their questions, but she rose her hands high, urging quiet, “We promise you; your votes will not be waisted and in the next few weeks you will all see what the benefits are off having an executive branch that is in line with the United Nations Councils leading party.”

Howard Austin: The Government Brief Rooms, Washington, North America, 11.03.2201

Sitting patiently Howard listened to the dozens of different voices filling the room, intel had poured in over the last few hours from various observatories around the planet, all confirming the same general story for days they had been checking and re-checking their sensors.

It would seem the mining crafts detected on long range sensors in the Alpha Centauri, Sirius and Epsilon Erdani systems vanished seemingly without trace, the only thing uniting all occurrences, a single sub-space messages seemingly issuing one command and one only. The message was detected at the very parameters of Earths listening capabilities, suggesting their origin was from a more highly advanced source. Attempts to track a flight pattern or travel route of those same ships had also turned up blank.

281990_20230814094109_1.png

“Have we managed to pin-point the origin of this signal?” Howard was keen to get to grips with the situation, the alien harvesters locked down in the vaults of Nevada at the forefront of his mind, if they were active in the area, the whole planet could be in danger. He had already ordered the guards in Nevada doubled, and Admiral Potti had been given orders to move the small contingent of ships to the Alpha Centauri hyper-lane entry point.

“It seems First Minister, to originate about three to four hyper-jumps away, we have a number of possibilities but presently the Procyon system is our strongest guess.” Dr Sanchez of the Canadian observatory, which had been the first to detect the signal had flown down especially for the meeting and had been co-ordinating with the other stations. “We have instigated a system wide, listening protocol, with all mining and energy harvesting stations setting their receivers at maximum capacity.”

Howard flicked over the details he had before him, “Have we managed to send a message to Captain Pike?” his second thought being, most obviously for the Valiant and her crew, who were defenceless, being nearly a two weeks or more travel from earth.

“We have sent them a message via a relay system in orbit of Pluto, but it will take some hours before it reaches Pluto and then an other three to four hours before it reaches the Barnard Star System!” Despite his lack off an official position, Dr Sanchez had been granted authority to handle the situation as he saw fit, with emergency legislation allowing him security clearances it would usually take many weeks to authorise.

The First Minister turned to his right, Diana and Caroline sat side by side, he looked to his communications chief, “Has this reached the public yet? We need to keep apace of this!” So far they had managed to avoid alerting the general public to the presence of alien vessels so close to earth, but he was sure that that would be a bridge, he would be crossing soon.

281990_20230814093730_1.png

Caroline looked somewhat dumbfounded, “Its on all major media channels and filtering across the web at rapid pace” she flicked through her own notes, “I heard the story breaking on the radio when I was on the way to the airport, that’s why I headed back” she tapped a news article and brought it up on the suddenly engaged, holo-screen, “Initial stories are actually really positive, some 70% of social media comments globally are enthusiastic, the general theme of the news briefings are in favour.”

A news program flashed up on the projector, it was Daniel Eveswater, one of North Americas Prime Time reporters hosting a breaking news story, entitled “A Bright New Day, We are not alone!” She waited for a moment, letting the First Minister watch a few of moments of recording, before she continued, “It would seem a number of amateur and voluntary astronomers in Turkey, who work out of a decommissioned government observation facility caught the signal and broke the story across Europe and the Middle East!”

Jessica Harris: - Chelsea Football Ground, London, United Kingdom, 14.03.2201

A shooting star skimmed across the night sky, visible for moments before it burnt up in the atmosphere, leaving a soft pink and green streak in its wake. Thousands of stars lit up the sky above, sparkling away, gently lighting up the night. She looked to the southeast, searching for the constellation of Ophiuchus, amid its celestial bodies was Barnards Star, where her brother she hoped was safe and well, serving on the Valiant.

It was hard to believe, that less than a hundred years ago, hardly any stars could be seen from London’s skyline due to the light pollution given off from the city. But that was back where her nan was a little girl, a lot had changed in that time, not least the carpet of stars that now covered the heavens. She often came up here to sit and look out over the city, climbing up through the abandoned stands of Chelsea Football Club, up onto the roof, using the same route, Alex, her brother had shown her when they were kids.

Looking south toward the Thames, the lights stretched a few dozen miles before they reached the river bank, the opposite side, which had once been as bright and shining as her own part of town, was now dark, the whole of south London had been flattened during the last world conflict, shelled repeatedly for nearly five long years, towns like Clapham, Southwark, Brixton and Peckham, were dangerous places nowadays. They hadn’t been exactly easily places to live prior to the war, filled as they were with people living in poverty and surrounded by criminal activity, but now, it was worse, far worse, and gang conflict still made those areas dangerous to enter. The national police force tried to keep some sense of order, and check points had been set up along all off the main bridges to the south side, but things looked set to change, and change for the better.

In the recent elections, the Freedom Alliance had won massive votes in the city on a promise of regeneration and investment, more important, over the last few nights she had received radio communications from friends who lived on the opposite side of the river, the news that potential first contact had been made, had led to some very quiet nights, as the locals took in the magnitude of the news.

She looked back up into the sky, watching another shooting star stream down toward the south-side, it was a busy night up there, from the little she knew of space, there must be a sizable dust cloud moving on the solar winds causing the swarm of shooting stars that had been falling over the last couple of nights.

“Stay safe Alex, I love you” she whispered to the night sky.

Captain Ni Zhao:- The UNS Discovery, Earth Orbital Shipyard, 22.03.2201

“Captain Zhao, a pleasure to meet you”, the hand that reached out had a firm grip and the arm it attached to, belong to a lady who enthused confidence and energy, the Captain being ever so slightly taken aback.

“Dolores Alonso I take it? The pleasure is all our” the Captain stepped out of the docking hatch, “Welcome to Discovery, if I had known you would be coming aboard sooner, I would have had rooms set aside for you.”

281990_20230814094028_1.png

Dolores chuckled, striding into the ship and following the captain, she turned for just a moment to hand her bags to a junior officer, “I am sure what ever quarters, you have made available for me will be just fine” she smiled, looking at the Captain for a moment, the Professor knowing all to well, that she had caught them unprepared and no quarters where currently available.

Captain Zhao smiled back, ever the politician, “I am sure the ships Quarter Master will make the necessary arrangements.”

“Perhaps we should arrange a meeting of the senior staff Captain, the intel reports coming from the Procyon system will need looking over before we depart the Sol sector.” Dolores was used to giving orders, and in this situation, as a special envoy of the First Minister dedicated to discovering the origins of the recent signals picked up on earth, her authority against that if the captains was somewhat ambiguous.

The UNS Discovery was the latest science vessel to be commissioned our of the shipyards, destined to join the Valiant on its journey beyond the stars, her specific task being to enter the Alpha Centauri system now that the automated mining ships were said to have vanished, leaving the system now save for entry.

Alexander Harris: Junior Botanist on the UNS Valiant, Barnards Star, 26.06.2201

Gazing out of the windows, Alex mind wander out across the deep, dark void of space, he vaguely knew which direction earth was in and he let his thoughts for a moment linger on his sister, and brothers and their home back in London. It had been months and months since they had managed to get any personal mail through, since comms were restricted currently to purely work based matters. The whole ship had heard about the strange signals picked up from the Galactic north and the apparent vanishing act of several of the automated alien crafts that had come up on long range sensors recently. He hoped that everyone back home was safe, and the news hadn’t caused to much commotion.

The refectory was packed with crew-members, and he had been really lucky to get a seat by the windows, hopefully Loretta, his “friend” would finish her shift soon. Looking out again, his heart swelled, and tears came to his eyes, emotions bubbling up that it was hard to control.

They were in orbit of the second planet in the Barnards Star system, a beautiful shining blue and green jewel, not at all dissimilar to earth in appearance, teaming with life, covered in water, clouds rolling across her skies, they very implication that just out of the window was a planet, only a couple of weeks from earth at current impulse speeds, one hyper jump away, that proved they were not the only life in the universe. Tomorrow, all going to plan, he had been selected to join one of the away teams down to the surface.

Brief look at the away team studies of Barnard Star II, Continental Class Planet

Alexander Harris: Botanist on the UNS Valiant, Barnards Star II, the surface, 03.07.2201

The small transporter skimmed quickly down from orbit, its descent being much smoother than Alex had expected, he and his away team were excitedly peering down our of the open side door, as the ship moved lower, clearing the sky-line, skimming some fifty feet at the most above the sea, its waves still audible despite the hum of the transporters engines.

Loretta pointed down toward to figures, swimming at pace in the shallow sea below, “They are similar to manta rays from back home, but look at the size off them!” she shouted over the comms, Alex looked for a moment down at the two fish, from this hight they didn’t exactly seem huge, but when he consider how far up still they were and how sizable they appeared even at this hight, he realised that from fin tip to fin tip, would be nearly 20 feet or more. And they were swimming at speed, the transporter was cruising a steady pace of thirty miles per hour and the manta were easily matching if not exceeding that speed.

“Professor Macalon it’s the best example he has ever seen of parallel evolution,” she came over closer, point to a huge black mass further out to see, “they don’t just swim in little groups, they are gathering here we suspect before making a crossing over the oceans, waiting for the numbers needed to give them the courage to set off.”

“They are amazing” Alex couldn’t help but be stunned at the sight and wished his sister were here to see it, she had after all a love of the sea and they had many happy memories visiting the aquarium up near Birmingham with their grandparents as kids.

“Be careful with that Harry, for God’s sake” Alex grabbed his support officers hand just in time, stopping him from prodding the most peculiar looking plant they had ever seen with a sample pin. “They seem to release a mix off pheromone clouds, we took samples the other day, but it needs a breathing mask, some are harmless clouds, and some seem to possess hallucinogenic properties, Ensign Cobert ended up in the infirmary after prodding one of those things without the right gear.”

His colleague looked ever so slightly panic struck, noting the tiny wafts of particles coming from the strange, green plants, “I guess I owe you a thanks.”

“No thanks required” Alex laughed little, turning away, “just be careful, plants are every bit as dangerous as animals if not more so!” These green fungus like plants, grew along the edges of the shore, clustering around rock pools, when submerged smaller versions of the plant had been seen, releasing their spore clouds to nock out small crustaceans and fish, stunning them and causing them to die at the plants bases were they were rapidly ingested.

Daniela Viscenza: Biologist, Barnards Star II, The Jungles of the Western continent, 23.07.2201

The forest floor had turned into a thick mush, with pools of mud nearly a foot deep if one was silly enough to step into them, up in the canopy, a small group of mammalian creatures where slowly ambling along, keeping themselves close together and constantly stopping to look down on the strange group of bi-peds tracking them from below. Three of the “adults” were whooping and chirping at each other, in a constant stream of chatter.

Birds fluttered in the distance and heavy footfalls and snapping branches could be heard, the team of biologists suddenly passing hand signals along to one another to keep their eyes open. Over the last few days they had come across several small herds of a animals they had named as the Barnardian bull, nothing at all like the cows off earth, apart from one similarity; having found the corpse of one of these animals, a quick autopsy had shown they possessed multiple stomachs, one design especially for the ingesting of soil and the mulch of the jungle floor, the best theory they could deduce was that this was for the extraction of minerals from the ground and decomposing bio-matter.

Up in the canopy there was sudden screeches, Daniela and her team’s attention drawn back into the canopy, noting another group of the little mammalians had crossed paths with the first group, and despite their apparent sweet appearance and loving family bonds, these meetings though infrequent were incredibly vicious and almost always resulted in the exchange of bites, kicks and attempted infanticide.

Loretta Scott:- Geologist, The Mountains of the Northern Continent, 29.07.2201

They had been hiking for days along the feet of a substantial mountain range, and Loretta and her squad had taken samples at various points, it would seem at one point, some 50,000 years earlier this mountain range had been made up of at least twelve active volcanoes, all but three of which were now extinct, with no chance of reawakening. Whilst this was nothing extraordinary it was nevertheless painted a fascinating picture of how the planets continents had moved. Studies from other geological teams across the planet suggested over the last millennium, the planet had under-gone massive shifts in its tectonic plates, shaping news shallow sea’s, opening up volcanoes and killing others off, the rise of mountain ranges had thrown up huge wind breaks that had allowed deserts to form rapidly and tropical forests to burst into life, the lowlands surrounding this particular range were matted with deciduous forest less than 10,000 years old.

They had diverted slightly from their planned path in order to look for a specimen of a species they had come across on a few occasions which had triggered great excitement in their biologists, a small four legged animal, who seemed to open doors into type of species not found on earth, a higher fungoid, on earth fungus’ were limited to far lower life-forms and it had been theorised for years they may one day evolve into higher beings, but here in these forests an example of that evolutionary path had been found, which would send scientists back on earth into a frenzy.

An informative look at some extraterrestrial lifeforms. Let's hope these spacefaring peoples aren't quite as bad as some of these, though.

As long as a war doesn't begin immediately, Earth isn't under threat. Even so, adapting the art of diplomatic espionage to the stars should be a priority.

Sub-chapter: In the Gaze of Giants

Captain Ni Zhao: UNS Discovery, In orbit of Alpha Centauri III, 01.08.2201

“Steady Ensign” the Captain sat calmly in her chair, the giant blue, cream and turquoise body of the gas giant that was Alpha Centauri III filling the view screen. Her only moon, had promised the most fascinating discoveries, with it being clear from the passing scans that the planet possessed a complex series of biomes, near perfect for advanced life-forms and with a breathable atmosphere.

However, as the Captain had made clear, their ship maybe called Discovery, but that was to be taken as a constant reminder of their mission brief, to discover new worlds and seek out the wonders of the universe, and Alpha Centauri III whilst clearly not offering the chance to discover life, was a phenomena no one back on earth would have expected. Her gaseous body, due to a series of unique qualities appeared to bare closer resemblance to gigantic liquid mass than any previous theories would allow.

Moreover, her team of biologists in the main science labs had begun to theorise over the last few days that this near liquid body offered the potential for gas giants to harbour life in their upper atmospheres, where they had previously been thought of as hot, barren clouds.

The Discovery juddered slightly, turbulence sparking the ships limited deflector buffer.

“I am diverting power to the graviton stabilisers Captain” the main bridge engineer spoke up, “there are huge plumes of methane, boron, argon and neon leaking out of the planet’s atmosphere which is causing the drag we are experiencing!”

Captain Pike: UNS Valiant, In Orbit of Barnards Star IV, 09.10.2201

“DIVERY MAXIMUM POWER TO THE ENGINES, FULL REVERSE” Captain Pike gripped the support rail, nearly losing his footing as the Valiant lurched uneasily on to her port-side, “Can we engage the emergency FLT-jump?” he was looking around for options, the Valiant caught in an ever expanding pockets of vacuous space opening in the planet’s surface.

“If we try to jump now captain we could rip the whole ship to pieces” Ensign Jones called back, the ship sinking ever lower, huge billows of gas pouring over the view screen as they descended through the stratosphere. “Diverting additional power to the stabilisers!”

“If we cant break free we will be consumed by the upper atmosphere and potentially risk being crushed either by the planets of gravity or the intense pressures within the clouds!” the Captain dashed across the bridge, moving one of the crew out off his way, to take over their control panel, “This is the Captain to main Engineering, Chief we need to be ready to divert power from the engines to internal systems” the Captain dashed in a series of commands, hoping the engineering team would act on his order, “We will keep trying to break us free, but if we go down then we need to ensure maximum hull integrity for as long as is possible!”

“Aye captain” came the reply, though who had answered was unclear, internal comms suffering from the sudden series of power drains, criss-crossing the ships systems to enhance the engines, stabilisers and deflectors which were now being pushed to beyond maximum safety levels.

“The is Captain Pike to First Officer Leonese” he waited a moment for the comm to confirm their link had been made, “begin the evacuation off all none essential decks and departments, all crew members are to report to secure sections with immediate effect, crew quarters are to be evacuated, airlocks will be placed under emergency protocols and all external doors will be placed on enhanced lockdown!”

“Captain we must abandon ship” First Officer Leonese replied near immediately, “if we are going down we must evacuate!”

Captain Pike paused a moment running a series of simulations across his control panel, “Negative Officer Leonese, the current projections show if we evacuate now, the fatality rate will be 100%, the escape pods will be sucked down and destroyed near immediately, we must try and strengthen the ship, it is a larger body and will be able to resist the planet internal pressures for far longer!”

The Valiant, lurched heavily forward, her descent increasing rapidly, they had ten minutes at most before the ship would be completely enveloped by the gas giant and her hull integrity would begin to be compromised, her stress levels already beginning to show dangerous thresholds being passed, if internal systems were not engaged soon.

“Don’t fight it any longer ensign” the Captain suddenly finding some clarity, “we will do more damage if we have to be dragged down, let her have her descent” he turned sharply to their comms officer, “send out an emergency distress call, if we cant fight it we can at least try and survive it.”

Captain Ni Zhao: UNS Discovery, In orbit of Alpha Centauri III, 26.10.2201

Zhao strode out off her ready room, a look off alarm on her face, “Ensign set course for Barnards Star at maximum speed” she sat down in her chair, her first officer clearly concerned, “The Valiant has gone missing, believe foundered into a gas giant, we have orders from Earth to make for their last known position!” She turned looking at the ensign who looked even more bewildered, “We have no away teams down on the surface?” she knew they did not, though they had been investigating Alpha Centauri III’s moon for several days, “If we do not have any teams below, break orbit immediately and make for the Sol hyper lane.”

“Aye, aye captain” the ensign turned, the ships engines suddenly firing to maximum power

Captain Pike: UNS Valiant, Beneath the Surface of Barnards Star IV, 18.12.2201

The Captain lay in his bed, scrolling through yet more simulations of how to potentially break free of the planets surface, so far six attempts had been made and all had resulted in serious damage to the engines, this new plan suggested going deeper into the planet and using the increased speed caused by the planets gravitational pull to hurl the ship out off the planets opposite side, the catch being such a plan could see the ship crushed within moments if their calculations were wrong.

It had been weeks now since the Valiant had become stranded, and moral on the ship had begun to ebb away at an alarming rate, sick bay reported a substantial increase in cases of extreme claustrophobia and psychological ailments, with little to be done to alleviate the problem except to offer sedatives to those suffering. But thankfully as only few casualties had been accrued. A number of crew members had had to be confined or temporarily relieved of duty due to mental health crisis, though more crew members were now idol due to the fact their departments had been forcibly closed to preserve energy which was being diverted to hull integrity, deflectors and life support, significant parts of the ship had also been abandoned or had their life-support and lighting diverted, entry to the cargo bays now required space suits, as their atmospheric supplies had been diverted to essential quarters.

Captain Ni Zhao: UNS Discovery, Barnard Star IV, 21.03.2202

“Divert all available power to the tractor beam systems” Ni Zhao was not about to let this attempt fail, “Divert power from all none essential systems, lower supply of power to life-support by 40%, evacuate all none essential decks and boost output to the communications systems!” They had managed to bring the Discovery in orbit above the UNS Valiant and whilst heavy pressures and atmospheric winds were buffering the ship out of alignment, they currently had a solid two way lock between both ships.

The Valiants depth was steadily improving and she was beginning to rise, communications with her bridge had however been haphazard, interrupted by radiation clouds and atmospheric anomaly.
