Hello and welcome to East vs West Redux!, where we try to give a definitive Cold War experience for the 1953 start date, I am a bit of an amateur when it comes to actually presenting my mods so do forgive me if I forget to mention some things here and there.
Dev Diary 1: 1953 in the CCCP or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Malenkov's Cultural Revolution
Introduction:
With the Korean armistice only a few months away from being signed, the Great Patriotic War still on everybody's mind, the status quo of Soviet politics has been shattered by the death of Premier Stalin. And now the country is ruled by nominal Head of State and war hero Kliment Voroshilov, and close confidant of Stalin and his deputy, Premier Georgy Malenkov, yet the party itself is rule collectively thanks to the 'Organized Chaos' since there was no clear ruler of the entire apparatus.
The start date is the same as NWO2's 1953 one, so news of Stalin's death will only reach international knowledge until on March 6th, when those news went public for the first time on Soviet media:
Now with both the nation and the international community with this knowledge, the cat is out of the bag, and immediately we see the famous power struggle after Stalin's death begin to emmerge:
After we are introduced to both our Head of Government and Head of State and what their positions look like, we take a look at the candidates in the aftermath with the biggest chance of consolidating power, and remaking Soviet society in their image, all of these are people who came close to reaching the status of paramount leader in the USSR:
Now here are our main four candidates, Georgy M. Malenkov, Lavrentiy P. Beria, Nikita S. Khrushchev and last but certainly not least, Georgy K. Zhukov. All of these men with stories, power bases, and most important of all, proposals as to what course the Soviet nation should take.
A Roulette of Favours.
In the Soviet Union there are four big players on who the current leader is, the People, since a very unpopular leader would certainly lead to unrest, the Army, while the Red Army would not want to perpretrate a coup, it's influence extends to all reaches of Soviet society, including the government, the Party, this one is rather obvious, the so called vanguard party of the revolution is the one with a near total control of Soviet politics, and there is also the Intelligence and Secret Police, MVD, MGB, NKVD, KGB, call it whatever you may, these fearful agencies can prove a difficult enemy, yet a priceless ally too.
All of these institutions and masses have different choices depending on the ambitions and favourites of each one. Yet for the purposes of this development diary I will go and try to get Zhukov in power.
The first thing I do is make the People support Zhukov, since he was a very popular figure due to his heroism this shouldn't be hard at all:
And now with Zhukov being given a mandate by the people, the Army now has the choice of non-intervention or supporting Zhukov, rather than the choice of supporting Khrushchev like our timeline, so all I'll do is make the Army backs Zhukov too:
Now we take a look as to who the party supports, since the party didn't have any intention of backing the Marshal I'd just randomly pick someone, like Beria for example:
And now we go to the kingmaker, the MVD and MGB, these two ministries can turn against Beria to precipitate his downfall, and while Beria con consolidate power on these, I will be choosing to contact Sergey Kruglov and Ivan Serov to help Zhukov get enough influence:
And now on September 14th the moment of truth arrives, the position of First Secretary was actually established on that very day, with this post basically being a direct successor to the one of General Secretary, whoever gets it becomes Head of State in-game:
And thankfully we have managed to get enough influence as Zhukov to secure the position!
Now obviously there are other ways to get other candidates in power, each one of them unique by design, but I think you all begin to understand how it plays out to get each one, I'll also note that if no candidate manages to get enough influence a compromise candidate will be elected to the post, which can end in a number of different ways too.
Conclusion:
That is pretty much all the first year content for the Soviet Union, with content planned for both superpowers for at least five years at release, I know it doesn't sound a lot but I'm trying to keep this project quite small and only as a type of expansion.
Any questions would be much appreciated! Since I am obviously not good at laying out most of the stuff in this mod with a dev diary like this.
