Edit - how to?

I got my EU copy last week and … well I have decided to edit few things. I have seen few posts here regarding editing leaders and some, EU spy, viewer etc.
My question is (sorry if already answered somewhere!):
Can I just open save file xxx.eug in excel and just play with numbers. expl. change gold, leaders, tech tree, settlers(or whatever we call them) etc.?

I have tried to change gold, but after changes the game would not run (just froze)…
Please help.

Don't use Excel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always edit files in wordpad or equivalent, the only reason they seem to open in Excel is that its' more visually pleasing.

Also, don't open the .eug file. You edit the other one.
