I edited the unitnames.csv a little bit but this results in it not being used by the program and all units only getting generic names. I edited the USA unit names, but loading up as Germany shows that her units, too, only get generic names, so I suspect this to be a general problem.

I was using libreoffice, my guess would be that despite saving as a csv file again, someone was changed so that the file does not register with the program anymore. Uploading the original unitnames.csv causes new units to get their proper names.

Anyone know what I have to look out for when editing the file? Any program recommended to do the editing?

Thanks in advance.

If you edit any of the files you need to take care that you add only those changes you want and do not unintentionally change e.g. the fileformat (e.g. when editing with Excel and being offered a different file ending) and do not change how the content is saved. I usually simply use the Editor that came with Windows or Notepad++.

Be aware, that all changes you do to those files only become active once you start a new game. After you have started a game the content of those files is stored in the games savegame and will not change despite what you edit in e.g. unitnames.csv

Apologis, but this conflicts with my recent observations. I have a savegame, when I use the edited unitnames.csv, everyone's new units get generic names. When I replace it with the original unitnames.csv, everyone's new units seem to have the appropriate names. I didn't wait for the units to be built, I just ordered a bunch of one-unit parallel builds and looked in the production menu, but it would seem unlikely that the name is changed only there and not in the finished unit?

Solved it, I opened and saved with Libre Office and it turned the semicolons into commas. Solved it by opening the original file again and deselecting all boxes regarding separations except semi-colons,

I noticed the difference when opening the original and the edited file with WordPad. Seems to be that WordPad is best to check the formatting, though for altering data, I still prefer an excel clone.
