Dear all,

Since I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of events, leaders etc. for Friesland, and also because the period 1419 - 1520 was a very important and interesting period in Dutch history, I decided to make some quite extensive modifications.

These modifications deal mostly with the affairs of Friesland, which also have impact on it's neighbouring countries. The events deal with the Frisian Civil War (1392-1498), the historical rulers of Friesland: Albrecht , Hendrik and Georg of Saxony, and ultimately the sale of Friesland to Karl V of Habsburg in 1515.

The changes include:
- new monarchs for Friesland
- new leaders for Friesland and Gelre
- new events for Friesland, Gelre, Oldenburg and Habsburg.
- changes to the country, province and the scenario files for Friesland.

Note: EU2 version 1.02 must be installed, v1.03 is preferred.
To make the post not too long, I cut it in different posts, each covering an aspect or file.

Historical Background:

Between 1392 and 1498, civil war raged in Friesland (Fryslân in Frisian). The two warring parties were called the Schieringers and the Vetkopers. The causes for the struggle became increasingly unclear, but it may originally have been a dispute between two monastic orders, or a struggle between social classes.

In 1498, the Schieringer party was fighting a losing battle against the Vetkopers, who had allied themselves with Gelre and Ost-Friesland (Oldenburg). In a desperate attempt to still win the struggle, the Schieringer party asked the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg to intervene (in that time, the northern Durch provinces were part of the HRE). Emperor Maximilian responds by sending Albrecht, Duke of Saxony to Friesland.

Albrecht was at that time Duke of Saxony, (although in EU2 a different line rules in Saxony) and had two sons, Georg and Hendrik. Georg was destined to succeed his father as duke of Saxony, while Hendrik was to become a monk. Albrecht believed that ruling Friesland was a better occupation for Hendrik, so when Emperor Maximilian offered Albrecht to rule Friesland is his heriditairy "Governor", Albrecht accepted.

When Albrecht arrived in Friesland, he began establishing a centralised , feudal state after the German example in Friesland. The Frisians, used to freedom (hence the Frisian saying: Every man is a King on his own Land), didn't accept that, and united themselves against Albrecht. Because Gelre saw Albrecht as an exponent of unwanted Habsburg influence in the region, Gelre entered the war as an ally of the Frisian people. Ost-Friesland (Oldenburg), still allied with the Vetkopers, also invaded Friesland.

In 1501, Hendrik succeeds his father as Governor. But he proves totally unfit to rule, much less over such a rebellious people. In 1505, his brother Georg takes over power in Friesland. He also is not capable of restoring peace to the country, so in 1515 he decides to sell Friesland to Karl V of Habsburg.

This doesn't quell the unrest in Friesland, especially since the many mercenary bands who fought the wars between 1498 and 1515 are still roaming the countryside looking for plunder.

In 1515, a farmer from Kimswerd becomes one of the most famous Frisian leaders in history. His name is Greate Pier Donia (Greate meaning large in Frisian). In 1515 his farm was plundered by Habsburg mercenaries. After that, he gathered a group of men who have met a similar fate and took to piracy on the Zuiderzee. (now IJsselmeer). He also attacked cities around the Zuiderzee (he sacked the well-fortified town of Medemblik in 1517).

After 5 years of fighting he was disappointed to see that his Gelderian allies were only interested in their own welfare, after which Greate Pier turned over the command of his forces to his nephew Wierd, and went back to spend the remainder of his life peacefully in Sneek. His sword (2.13 meters long and weighing 6.6 kilo's) is being kept in the Fries Museum. The location of his grave is kept secret.

Changed the domestic policies for Friesland drastically. In 1419, Friesland was perhaps the only free and (more or less) democratic nation in the world. I changed the domestic policies to represent that.

Friesland was very much a seafaring country, so I added a port. I also changed the terraintype to match Holland, which has more or less the same landscape. The city in Friesland has been changed from Groningen to Ljouwert (Leeuwarden), because Ljouwert has always been the capital of Friesland. Groningen is Saxon, not Frisian.

- Added Greate Pier as a leader. I made him both a general and an admiral, because he fought both on the sea as well as on shore. If anyone doesn't like that, I would suggest keeping him as an admiral, since he fought most of his battles on the Zuiderzee. Because he fought for the freedom of Friesland, he will appear on the side of Gelre in case Albrecht of Saxony becomes monarch in Friesland.
- Added Frisian names for random generals.
- Added Karel II van Egmont, duke of Gelre as well as Maarten van Rossem. They were already in the game, but as leaders for the Netherlands, not for Gelre .

Added the appropriate Frisian monarchs / councils. Historically (until 1498), Friesland was "ruled" by a (non-permanent) council of representatives from the different towns and villages.

- Changed initial stability to -3 to represent the civil unrest.
- Added national provinces, Holland (West-Friesland), Oldenburg (East-Friesland), Bremen (East-Friesland) and Holstein (North-Friesland). These provinces (or parts of these provinces. In Bremen and Holstein, the only Frisian parts were the coastal area's and the islands. So it might be overdone to mark them as Frisian national provinces.) were part of the original Frisian kingdom, as well as the Frisian "Opstalboom" treaty (+/- 1000AD to 1327AD) for mutual defence by all Frisian countries.
- Added German as a Frisian national culture, to make Frisian (diplo-) annexation of Frisian national provinces more feasible.

Phwew, that is it. I can finally go to sleep now

I know it is a LOT  :D of reading, but I would appreciate it if you guys looked into it. If you need to email me, of if you want me to send you the files, this is my email account: zius_nl@excite.com

Impressive, but I still feel that giving Friesland german culture is too much. IMO just leave the CB; perhaps leave out the one on Bremen.

Secondly I hope that Gelre will also receive the "works", as now Friesland is clearly much stronger when comparing the two.

Thridly, in 1419 there should be a nation "Duchy of Holland" in The Hague (or whatever it is) province, as it was historically.Sadly, I just knowit existed then, but nothing more. I hope someone could expand on this thought...

Correction on my last post. Duchy of Holland was not a completely free entity. We can choose (if we decide to implement this) between and new country as a vassal of Brabant/Hainaut or transfer it entirely to ownership of Brabant

I hope the stability losses and revoltrisk doesn't doom them.

I would suggest that Oldenburg and Gelre have in their events the opportunity to say "We do not care what happens in Friesland" if they don't want to antagonize Austria.

Does the command sleepleader work for a foreign leader?

but I still feel that giving Friesland german culture is too much.

Well, I agree that Friesland is not large enough to have more than one culture. On the other hand, in 1419 there were still hopes that the ancient Frisian kingdom would be restored. This would mean that Frisians living in would overthrow their feudal overlords, and join Friesland proper. So I feel that that should be (very remotely) possible. Not having German culture would make it very hard, since there is no seperate Frisian culture. And perhaps that is a little too much detail.

Secondly I hope that Gelre will also receive the "works", as now Friesland is clearly much stronger when comparing the two.

I take it you haven't played it yet... :D Please keep in mind that between 1419 and 1498 you have a 10% revolt risk added. This means about 2 revolts per year. This will effectivily reduce the chance of Friesland attacking Gelre to 0.

Thridly, in 1419 there should be a nation "Duchy of Holland"

That is correct, until 1428, the county of Holland and Zeeland was independent. It was ruled by the house of Hainault. After various struggles between Jacoba van Beieren (Jacqueline de Baviere) and various contenders, Holland became a vassal of Burgundy in 1428. Burgundy diplo-annexed Holland in 1433.

Someone should probably make some events for all this, but that is not me for now...:)

BTW. Brabant was not directly involved.

I hope the stability losses and revoltrisk doesn't doom them.

That does happen (not always), but historically Friesland was doomed anyway.

I would suggest that Oldenburg and Gelre have in their events the opportunity to say "We do not care what happens in Friesland"

That would not be historically correct, since they had military alliances with various cities / parties within Friesland. So not helping their allies would be dishonoring their alliance. Besides, they were already fighting for their survival against Austria / Burgundy, so if they are not already at war, they should be :D

Does the command sleepleader work for a foreign leader?

Yes is does. I tested this. :D

Yes is does. I tested this.

And yea there was great rejoicing.

So not helping their allies would be dishonoring their alliance. Besides, they were already fighting for their survival against Austria / Burgundy, so if they are not already at war, they should be

Only in the unlikely event that Burgundy was at peace during the 1470's :D

A possible solution for the Friesland cultures prbolem would be to script a simple event that would give them the german state culture (or change the culutre in Oldenburg to dutch, however I consider this a drag) if Oldenburg would be claimed by Frisia.

Weren't there some Frisian events and leaders in the Western Europe thread. Sorry if that's alrady known.

Looks nice. I have to object to seige level 2 leaders though. Without a STRONG historical reason all leaders ought to have seige 0. If they were known as good at taking cities seige 1. Seige 2 is VERY powerful.

I'd also propose that the Habsburgs get the opportunity to say: I don't care about these tiny Netherlands states rather than get involved and take the relationship hits.

Fantastic news. Still I think the seige values are particularly unbalancing because of how they shorten seiges and assaults. Thanks for the work!

Good suggestion. I'll script this ASAP. I would favour the latter: any captured national provinces annexed by Friesland become Dutch. This would simulate the renaissance of the Frisians in those provinces. (And the replacement of german oriented leaders with Frisian ones.:D )

I don't believe so. I searched for it. I did post the "Frisian Council" idea in the monarchs thread earlier.

I have to object to seige level 2 leaders though.

It is done to model his ability to quickly capture cities using quick raids. I do see your point however. Does anyone else prefer a reduction of siege value to 1?

The Holy Roman Emperor had (being emperor) a resposibility to intervene in the civil war in Friesland when asked.

Besides that, the Netherlands was one of the key areas of Burgundian expansion. The Habsburgs inherited this ambition. In 1498, the Vetkoper party (the party of Habsburgs enemies Gelre and Oldenburg) almost won the civil war. This would result in a strong, anti-Habsburg Friesland.

So, I believe not intervening would not be an option for Habsburg. It would only lead to a strong anti-Habsburg block in the Netherlands, while they don't get anything in return.

Same goes for shock and fire values.

I don't agree. These stats are about the same as the average Napoleontic general. Not too much to ask for a national hero, IMHO. I am interested to see your opinion however.
