Tordesillas and other portuguese matters

Tordesillas:

The treaty of Tordesillas, after it was corrected, gave to Portugal just a little piece of Brazil roughly everything east of the 45°M. So in the game portuguese shields take more colonies then they should.
To be more correct portuguese shields in Brazil should be only the provinces in the line of "Salvador" or eastern.

Amazon
Anyway to turn all of the provinces in this reagion to swamp(waiting for Paradox to create jungle) would be a good step towards reality. Also the provinces in the reagion should be made very poor, there was nothing there to trade at the time, well maybe rubber later on but it is insignificant.

Goods:
The provinces in the Amazonia region should all produce fish
Minas Gerais should produce gold.
Mato Grosso should produce grain.(no gold there)
Salvador and Itaimas should produce coffe.(note: Salvador is in the wrong place it should be 1 province higher, so I'll just assume that Salvador is the province of "Guanabara" with the capitol "Rio de Janeiro")
Curitiba could produce wool or grain.
Araxa could produce copper or grain
All the other provinces in Brazil should produce sugar(no tobacco here). In another note if Paradox introduces wood as a good Diamantina should produce that. After all Brazil is the name of the wood found there that was very in demand in Europe at the time.

Historical discovering of Brazil

Pedro Alvarez Cabral should start in 1499 so he'll have time to discover Brazil in 1500.
I think explorers getting 3 ships, that were surely modeled after's Colombo's Santa Maria, Pinta and Niña is a little hard on Portugal, P.Alvarez Cabral discovered Brazil with 13 ships and Vasco da Gama had a huge fleet when he set sail to India.

Missing Events:

The royal family of Portugal fled it's country to refugiee in Brazil during the Napoleon era, I have to do some research before posting the exact facts but it would be nice.
Stab penalties, maybe vassalization or even the chance if Portugal get's annexed to revolt in Brazil.:)

Early colonization

Also can't we do anything to keep countries from "too" early colonization?

Wow! How do you know so much about Brazil?:)

Anyway, just finished a book about the Portuguese Empire. It was not very helpful, but it did claim that gold was found both in Minas Gerais and Mato Grasso, and documented gold rushes to those areas at different times.

I was also thinking of doing some events for Portugal, after I found a decent reference. I was going to try an event that would trigger the option to move the Portuguese capitol to Brazil (actually, I think it was to Rio, in 1807 ) after a certain time period.

something like this...

#Relocate Capital to Brazil#

NOT = { controlled = { province = 441 data = -1 }}

}
action_b ={ #Stay in Portugal#

}
}

I think Havard is coding an event dealing with marriage of Isabel of Castille and Fernando of Aragon, and Portugals support of Juana afterwards (which led to a battle and defeat)

I have been wanting to simulate Portuguese conflict with Dutch and English in the East. Perhaps tied to the vassalization by Spain event? Any ideas?

I was also toying with the idea of giving Portugal a "Sebastian doesn't die/disappear" option such as Burgundy has, but have not thought about the possibities of alternative monarchs, etc. yet.

If anyone is interested in these things or just has ideas that I may be able to code, that is great:)

Also, I had made these events simply because I thought Enrique the Navigator deserved some mention, and he was alive and sponsoring expeditions until 1460 even if he was not exploring or fighting himself.

These events also most likely give Portugal a jumpstart in Naval tech/research.

the Muslim port of Ceuta. His object was to extend the Holy Faith of Jesus Christ, but he
was also seeking for the kingdom of Prester John, the legendery Christian Priest-King of Africa.
In August 1415, the Portuguese fleet attacked and swiftly took the port. During his time in Ceuta
he saw evidence of the trading riches of the interior - spices, oriental rugs, gold, silver etc.,

son of the cartographer Abraham Cresques, was brought to Sagres to supervise the collation of geographic facts
brought back by Henry's explorers, who were encouraged and later required to keep detailed logs of their voyages.
Muslims and Arabs, Italians from Genoa and Venice, Germans and Scandinavians came to Sagres. This community

One could argue that the King is just a crusading nut who declares war and gets himself killed regardless of your (the players) choices.

and then, historically, Phillipe II's claim to the Portuguese throne occured following the death/disappearance of Sebastio in the battle (battle of three kings? I forget just now). That event just occurs, no trigger, no choice (even if you choose the "lock Sebastiao away" option in the prior event)...

I was proposing that we come up with an alternative to this historical path, i.e., Sebastio survives, and Phillipe therefore has no claim. Then we would have to come up with alternative monarchs during the time period when the Spanish kings ruled. (until approx. 1640?) That is, unless people crawl out of the woodwork screaming about historical vs. ahistorical pathways;)

Anyone have any ideas on possible monarchs or other input?

Researching

[EDITED] Fixed the links that were broken :D

Wow! How do you know so much about Brazil?

I have to. You don't get to be the king just because you want to. :D

These events also most likely give Portugal a jumpstart in Naval tech/research.

This is a very relevant point as I think we can end those too early explorations by Portugal.

My sugestion is comment out or make simple admirals both "Diego de Senill" and "Gil Eanes". But using events give all the historical discoveries in the proper date, at least until Vasco da Gama. And even then maybe we could add an event for Portugal financing or not the trip of Vasco da Gama, if they do then in the correct date 1497(I think) Portugal should get Vasco da Gama already in India with all the provinces in this "supposed" trip already discovered.(I know, I know it's a lot...)

I was also thinking of doing some events for Portugal, after I found a decent reference. I was going to try an event that would trigger the option to move the Portuguese capitol to Brazil (actually, I think it was to Rio, in 1807 ) after a certain time period.

That will be very nice indeed if we had an event like that.
Here's my two cents:
Just to make sure, yes the capitol should be Rio and if were're using the language-mod that will be the actual province of "Salvador" wich in the mod get's the name of "Guanabara" and it's capitol "Rio de Janeiro".

The monarchs of Brazil were always the future kings of Portugal, just like there is the Prince of Wales, there was the Prince of Brazil(the heir of the throne of Portugal)
This started in 1645.

When Napoleon declared the all nations should close it's ports to English trade the portuguese didn't follow and Napoleon went on to conquer Portugal keeping his word.
When the court moved to Rio in 1808 the King of Portugal, Dom João chenged the name of it's kingdom to the United Kingdom of Portugal Brasil and Algarve first thing he did was to declare all the ports open the "friendly nations".

Flag of the United Kingdom of Portugal Brazil and Algarve

In game terms I think from this date on(or from the date the event takes place on) if Portugal re-conquer Lisbon then Brazil can and should became independent.

The independence of Brazil was in 7 september 1822, there were revolts but no revolution, no real fight against Portugal, after all the first king of Brazil was Dom Pedro II son of Dom João VI king of Portugal. Dom Pedro in 1827 even went on to be king of Portugal and left the regency of Dom Miguel in control of Brazil until his son Dom Pedro de Alcântara(Dom Pedro II) was major.
(I know the game ends before these dates but I think if you're going to make the event's you should know all this.)

During the "revolts" of independence Brazil's court hired the services of mercenaries(english, french and even portuguese), this could be also emulated in the event.

Flag of the Kingdom of Brazil

To resume all this weird things ;)

The court of Portugal should have an event to move to Rio if Lisbon get's occupied and the name of Portugal should change to "Reino Unido de Portugal"(only in Napoleon's Era of course), something should be done to make sure Rio is a big colonial city. In RL Rio had around 50K population and the court of Portugal added another 15K(that is sure a big court)

Linked to this event we could have:

An event giving portugal money for commerce(Open ports to friendly nations), maybe money too, worse relations to France and allies and better relations to england and allies.

From this event on Brazil can revolt! Well not really revolt, one way to do this is a few months after the revolt make them vassals of Portugal and make relations around +100 again.

If Portugal re-conquer Lisbon then a choice should be made, either move back to Portugal and Brazil is independent(to make things simple)
or stay and loose the provinces in Portugal and the whole Portugal colapse :) (well maybe you shouldn't have a choice here)

First monarch "Dom Pedro I"(very high diplomacy) followed by a fairly good regency by Dom Miguel until 1831 when "Dom Pedro II" turns major.(well the game doesn't go that far...)

When Brazil becames independent it should get it's mercenairies to aid with the revolts. It should also get loads of colons, as the growth experienced after the independence was huge.

Just to remember Brazil at this time was only everything east of the 45° M. if you look at a map there was still 80% of the country to conquer and colonize(mostly colonize)

If you add fictional monarchs, it's a good idea to awoid traditional names for Portuguese kings like Pedro

Not really because spanish names are mostly the same.

Are you sure ? The heir to the throne would be more the Duke of Bragança :) Specially after 1640.

Well of course Brazil in 1645 didn't have monarchs this was just a title the given to the heirs of the throne.(maybe not all of them), just like the Prince of Wales is the heir of the English throne.

One could easily be Duke of Bragança and also Prince of Brazil if the so called Duke was the heir to the throne:)

Annibale: In the sequence of D. Sebastio death, one descendent of D. Manuel I and therefore a pretendent to the portuguese throne fought against the spanish (although he was defeated and forced to the exhile in France). He was D. Antonio, the Prior of Crato. Another pretendent to the portuguese crown was D. Joao duke of Braganca who was a descendent of D. Joao I (the king when the game starts), although he prefered not to fight against spain, staying neutral in the fight that D. Antonio made against Philipe. Note that in 1640 when Portugal broke its ties with Spain it was the duke of Braganca (obviously an descendent since D. Joao was long dead) who became king.

So my suggestion would be to give the player three choices:
a) Surrender to spain, becoming its vassal
b) Support D. Antonio, giving spain a casus belli against portugal, or even starting a war between both countries, and in case spain wins the war, making portugal a vassal (is this possible?)
c) Support D. Joao Duke of Braganca, same effects as above and maybe a civil war (don't know how D. Antonio would react???)

Since I don't have Europa Universalis 2 yet :( I can't make the events, but I'm willing to help providing the possible monarchs (or even more historical details) to one of those choices if someone happens to like my ideas :)

It was Dona Catarina Duchess of Bragança in fact. Source : Historia Concisa de Portugal of Pf. José Hermano Saraiva.

I do like the ideas/options you suggested, would appreciate info about alternate monarchs, and would be happy to attempt the coding:)

DuquedeBraganca: Thank you for correcting me, in the research I made I only looked for the male dukes thus forgeting that in fact the pretendent was D. Catarina, also, thanks for pointing out that marvelous book that is the "História Concisa de Portugal" of Pf. José Hermano Saraiva that I took out from one my dusty shelves :)

Annibale: Since you are interested I will present you with the lineage of the dukes of Braganca, (option c) ) which presents a good way to make the lineage of the fourth dinasty intact since their descendent became king of Portugal in 1640. The first monarch would be D. Catarina I , a queen (no problem with the following monarchs since we didn’t have any ruling queens with that name), she would rise to power after the death of D. Henrique. She was born in 18/01/1540 and died in 15/11/1614.
The next monarch would be D. Teodosio I , her first born son (no problem with his name since Portugal didn’t had any king with his name). He was born in 1568 so he would be 48 when he would rise to the throne. He died in 29/11/1630.
The son of D. Teodosio, D. Joao IV would become the next monarch. In reality he was the first Portuguese king since D. Henrique, after Philip IV of Spain, so he would become king ten years earlier than in real life. He was be 16 when his father died so I think a period of regency isn’t necessary.
The good thing of this option is that the next kings would be the same that are scripted so further coding wouldn’t be necessary.

Well I think this already gives something for you to think about, while I research for the other option b), that would require a great job of coding unless we would say that at the time of the death of D. Antonio, the branch of Braganca would revolt and seize power. Note: This suggestion I made is just so that people don’t have to code too much. But if anyone has other suggestion to solve this problem, or is almost insane (in the good way :) ) to create an entire dynasty please say so and I’ll provide with all of the D. Antonio descendents names, but be prepared for me to take some time to gather that kind of information (hey I’m almost insane too :D )

About further information (historic facts) on the problem of succession, feel free to ask.

I thought about an historic background to the problem of the portuguese sucession.

Here it goes:

After D. Seabastio death D. Henrique son of D. Manuel I rose to the throne but he was an old man and would soon die without an heir. (If only he had made a will...)

There were three pretendents to the throne after his death:
D. Philip II of Spain son of D. Isabel (daugther of D. Manuel I) who had a large support of the nobles but lacked peasant support,
D. Antonio despised by the nobles because he was an ilegitimate son of D. Luis (son of D. Manuel I) but with great support from the lower classes and finally
D. Catarina who had more rights, since she was the legitimate daughter of D. Duarte (son of D. Manuel I), who didn't have much support from either side but in my opinion is the one who should have become the monarch.

Some effects for the event could be:

If choosing D. Philip II would increase aristocracy and decreasing people's rights, a larger revolt risk or a decrease in stability.
If choosing D. Antonio would decrease aristocracy, increase people's rights and perhaps increasing centralization
Choosing D. Catarina (hell, I don't know) :D
Note: also consider the other ones I've written in a previous post.

Thanks Ezzezze,

I should be able to get started today.

Regarding D. Antonio's lineage: I had also thought of engineering a change in dynasty to transition back to the Braganza line so that we meshed with the historical monarchs again. Unaware of the descedants of that line, I was thinking of a fictional "royal marriage to only daughter" type of event, or something more peaceful, but I suppose we can work it out soon.

Thanks again

:)

Well, I have never added a country or revolter, which is what we would have to do in order to incorporate independent Brazil.

So, I am going to start with what I know how to do (scripting/coding events) first and then go from there. Many of the changes you proposed regarding Brazil, I am unsure how to accomplish off the top of my head.

I have already changed Senill to an admiral, and hooked my "cape Badajor" event to a wakeleader command for Eannes, so maybe this will help some with the early exploration issue you brought up.

The relocation of capital events are easy enough, but as I said, I haven't worked on establishing independent Brazil yet. I like the idea, I just need to figure out how to do it (the knowledge is readily available, I think, in Havard's web pages and the work of some others here in this forum)

I am just back from vacation as well, so I haven't been around the PC much lately (I do have a job too, so can not devote as much time as I would like...):)
