With elective succession, is the game over if a non-family member is the strongest vessel and inherits everything upon the ruler's death? As France, I just acquired a bunch of new vassals, some of which are stronger than that of my (until now) heir and son. The first two in the line of succession are now dukes from other dynasties...do I have to make sure to get somebody from my own dynasty in the no. 1 position before the ruler dies?

If you want to keep your king-title then yes. If not then you will continue as your son (with just the titles that your son has).
