I have not modded the defines file like the one in Rome for some time. Does changing the end date in this file work or is it hardcoded in the exe?

Not sure if this can help you (I'm completely new to this game), but I read in the game manual that the game enddate was hardcoded to be the one imngame.
With the beta patches (v2.35 and later, as you might already know v2.36c is the current one) editing the value in the defines file does change the end date. If you don't have the beta patch it is hardcoded.
