I'm a little mystified as to how battles turn out in EU. Sometimes battle will be going along fine, and then all of the sudden my troops will bolt. Sometimes the other nation's troops will be down to 'breaking' morale, and my morale will be at 'strong', and then all of the sudden their morale will stop dropping and my morale will collapse in a matter of seconds.
Once, I marched into Venice with overwhelming superiority in every category (twice the infantry, three times the cavalry and three times the artillery), WITH a leader (Ferdinand), and the Venetians still schooled my sorry butt. And Venice doesn't even have favorable defensive terrain.
One of my friends was playing as England. The French attacked Calais with 23,000 infantry and 3,000 cavalry. He was defending with 27,000 infantry and 7,000 cavalry. The French mopped the floor with him, destroying his entire army and losing only 2,000 guys. And this was on the defensive.
I'm sure there are some complicated formulas behind all this, but I am absolutely mystified as to what they are. I'd like to have some idea of how battles will likely turn out before I go into them...
