I have a problem with the game freezing up. The game loads up and I can start a scenario, but after one or two years of gameplay, the screen freezes on me. [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete] doesn't work for me, so I must hit the reset button.

I downloaded the newest 1.00 to 1.02 patch from the SF site last night, uninstalled EU2, than rebooted. On fresh boot I installed EU2 and than the patch. I turned off music and set graphics to 1024x768, than loaded EU2. I clicked on Grand Campaign and selected Brabant to play. I set the options to Normal/Normal, Fog of War Off (default?), 1 minute = 8 months, and rest of options are default. I start the game and it played fine until mid-1420 and it locked up. I hit reset and reloaded the savegame, made it to 1424 than it locked up again. I hit reset and than set graphics to 800x600. Loaded game and set time to 1 minute = 4 months, than started a new GC as France. Again the game locked up, this time in 1421.

With v1.00 the game played fine. I could play at 1024x768, fog of war on, 1 minute = 2 years (though played like 1 minute = 6 months), and had no problems. It might lock up or crash to Windows after about 50 years of playing (2 hours?). The v1.01 patch played just as fine too. The false v1.02 locked up all the time on me, so I just played v1.00. Than last night saw people talking about the correct v1.02 up, so got that and same lock up problem.

Here is my computer stats:
Celeron 500mhz
128 RAM
Windows ME
Direct X 8.1
8mb ATI All-In-Wonder Rage 128
Sound Blaster Live MP3+
Microsoft Internet Keyboard
Microsoft Intellimouse w/Intellieye

Make sure you have the latest drivers for ALL your hardware. If you have any program running in the background (like something for your Intellimouse) disable it before starting the game. You can use CTRL-ALT-DELETE to kill software before starting, or you can go to MSCONFIG (Start Menu, run, msconfig), Startup and uncheck the boxes for everything not necessary (if something doesn't work, you can always go back there and re-check the box, even in Windows Safe Mode).

It doesn't make sense to me why I would need to disable anything when v1.00 and 1.01 worked fine, but 1.02 (both versions) freezes on me.

PCs dont always make sense!
The patch has added quite a lot and made the game even more resource intensive.
Try Vipers suggestions and see what happens.

Okay, here is a question concerning an error I've been getting during a cold boot (eventually after some resets, it loads up). A blue screen appears just as the Windows ME logo screen pops up. It says there is a problem with system file and gives me the error:

VxD dynamic link call: VMM (01) + 0000C429 to "5500", service 4C2.

It says type 'y' to continue, or 'n' to not. If I do 'y' than it switches to another screen saying error in device 5500, service 74. Something about a problem with "configmg".

So any idea what device is causing this problem?

Yeah!

It's your videocard (or rather, the address your videocard-drivers use via Windows-support to access your videocard).

Windows ME has come a long way from the Win9x-systems; usually, a blue screen would show up every 3 out of 10 sessions, seemingly out of the blue.

Windows ME, however, usually uses the Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD in jargon) when there's a hardware-access problem. (Note, though: Windows ME is full of hardware/software-schizophrenia and should never have been released.)

The thing to do, is:

1) download the latest drivers from your videocard-manufacurer's website;
2)uninstall/unplug your videocard, reboot, let Windows ME sort out where to place it in it's software-environment.

Since by doing this the videocard will be the 'last' hardware-item WinME installs, it will place it somewhere where it is not bothered by other hardware running on your pc.

But if you want - what is in my opinion - the best solution? Buy the best & hardest army-boots from your local dumpstore, kick Windows ME from your system and install Windows 2000 Professional. When that's done, download Service Pack 2 from the Micro$oft-website and install that. Then you will have the most stable OS around - it even kicks XP's ass (because XP suffers from the same problem as ME - 'enforced' game-playability on an OS which wasn't designed for games or media in the first place).

Cheers,
Phelos.

Oh, and if doing all the above (besides swapping ME for Win2K) won't work, run off to your nearest pc hardware-retailer, explain the problem, be nice & kiss the cashier's butt, ask whether they have an up-to-date 2nd-hand videocard lying around (they always do) and if you can just borrow it for an hour or two, replace that with your ATI-videocard and just see what happens. If the game runs and there are no more BSOD's, run back to the retailer (with the borrowed card!) and buy a new videocard, cuz your ATI is probably screwed up.

Regards,
Phelos.

PS
Always noteworthy: check Microsoft's website (Windows ME) to see if any of your hardware is supported by Windows. They have lists called Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).

okay, I uninstalled ATI drivers, which made me pick new drivers upon reboot, so I picked standard VGA, than installed the new ATI drivers. I shutdown completely and than booted up perfectly, so far so good. Later I shall try EU2 and see how it plays now. :)

On another "problem", or I should say hassle of mine. When I login to the internet, the window pops up but the save password and auto connect boxes are greyed out so I cannot check them. It worked fine before, but since I formated the computer a month ago it has been greyed out. I assume something didn't install. Any idea?

you need to have "Client for Microsoft networks" installed in your network protocols. Once done, the box will be available.

Well, the blue screen error has been taken care of as a result of doing what phelos suggested, however EU2 still locks up after a couple years go by. I have removed everything from the system tray, and did [ctrl]+[alt]+[del] and all it shows is "explorer" and "systray". My system says 88% resources free (after fresh boot) too.

EU2 v1.02 just has too high system requirements or my system just doesn't like v1.02. So I have uninstalled EU2 and shall await 1.03 patch to see if that works better.

Strategy First should be sued for falsifying system requirements. Many people, betatesters included, have said 256 RAM is very much a necessity, yet the recommended requirements is 128 RAM - which most EU2 games say they have but their game still runs slow.

Back I return to playing Half-Life multiplayer mods (most being betas) for hours and hours - without freezes or crash problems!!!

Why not just increae your ram to 256mb or more? I understand it's pretty cheap in the US these days.

uh, cheap for whom? I have $90 to my name and $60 be gone this week for car insurance, the rest be for gas so I can drive to university. I am also unemployed, so have no steady income. I am borrowing $200 just to buy books for the semester - my parents cover my tuiton luckily.

Donations of RAM are greatly appreciated though. :D
