This is an issue that has not affected me before. I just decided to use my old EU2 disc on my somewhat new computer (in reality I just replaced my old computer's hard drive with a newer one). Everytime I run EU2, the screen goes black and I have to end the program with task manager. The Bink video player would come on, but after the intro clip, it goes back to windows. I tried compatibility and Windows troubleshooting, but it has only made the bink video player non-responsive as well.

Rename the AVI directory to AVI-old and reboot.

What do you mean, your CD? Are you trying to run the game from there rather than installing it to your hard disk and then running it?

So you have successfully installed it, yes or no? It's still not clear to me.

If you have, then I'm suggesting you renaming the AVI directory (under the Eu2 directory) on your hard disk, not on your CD.

Ah, so you don't know about Windows file systems and directories or folders ... this is going to be tricky.

In Windows go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - Windows Explorer. This allows you to see the file system, including folders/directories and files. In the left pane of that application go to My Computer - Local Disk C: - Program Files - Paradox Interactive - Europa Universalis II. You should see in the right pane the list of sub-directories under the EU2 folder, one of which will be AVI. Right-click on AVI and choose Rename from that menu, and rename it to AVI-old . Then you can run the game without the movies and bink player running beforehand, which I think will solve your problem.

The autorun icon is there presumably because you still have the CD in the drive. If you've applied the last patch, 1.09 you don't need it. But that doesn't matter, either way. But if you haven't applied 1.09 you should as it fixes huge numbers of bugs and problem in previous versions. http://www.paradoxplaza.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=39&Itemid=120

I know AVI is not the disc. It is the name of a folder on your hard disk, that the EU2 install process put there. Do not try to rename anything else!

Maybe I'm still misunderstanding you. Are you having this problem while installing Eu2, or while running it?

If while running it, and you have installed it successfully, then my procedure above will work.If you can't follow it, I'm not really going to be able to help you any further ... do you know someone with more PC knowledge who can help you do it?

You say in your OP the Bink player is running, so the AVI directory IS there. can you see the EU2 directory? What directories do you see underneath it?

Okay. When I explore the disc. I see a Setup icon, a EU2 icon (which just leads to paint), a folder leading to DirectX, and EU2 autorun icon. I think there is another that just contains the autorun option bars in paint.

That is the CD you are exploring. If you have patch 1.09 applied you do not need the CD in the drive, it has nothing to do with your problem or playing the game. I'm talking about your hard disk, your C: drive.

I don't care whether you have the CD in the drive or not, I was just saying you don't need it.

Focus back on your actual problem. In post #8 I gave specific instructions on how to rename the AVI directory on your hard disk ( C: drive). Can you please rename that directory, or get help from someone there who can do it for you.
