eu2 not starting

win2000, eu2. patch 1.05.NA.
directx8.1

Just installed eu2 on my new win2000 box. As it gets to "Initializing globals" it just hangs. Any ideas?

uninstall the game following these instructions:

install the game, no patch. Does it run?

Yes: install patch 1.05
