Hi,
albeit being a paradox follower, I didnt really bother about this game since it looks like a civ5 rip-off and it seems to be generic fantasy (not my cup of tea).
but jeebus was i WRONG. played the demo on saturday - bought it after 10 minutes, and have been playing 29 hours in a row (3 breaks for sleeping).

personally i think this game is BETTER than civ5, (which may just be cos it caters better to my civ5 playing style :))

how come there is so few people in this forum?
how come this game has an average rating of just 70 something?

a marketing deficit? is this game "big" in russia?

a shame.
ahem. just my monday morning precoffee office blabering.
what? its not monday today?

I have also been a big supporter of Paradox. I have HOI1 and HOI3, EU3, Crusader Kings 2, etc. I also support Matrix Games.

Warlock is a fantastic game. Has the best elements of MoM and Civ5, and cleaner and crisper to boot. All I want is MORE! For example, split off Goblins and make an Orc faction. How about Dwarves? Maybe a aquatic or marine faction. And some water developments... Fish resource, pearls, etc.

Unfortunately this game is not "big" in Russia. People here don't know about it, very few buy games not on disc. I agree with point, that if more people would knew about Warlock - more would happy to have it.

I second that but ... I'm afraid it won't happen considering PI's post yesterday in another thread here on the forums.

Could you enlighten me as to the contents of that post?

Hello guys! I will put some thoughts in here.

We are extremely happy and grateful to have devoted players that care so much about the game, and we will always do our best to deliver good things. When it comes to the future however, we can not discuss everything. When something is done and almost ready for release, we will make an announcement. We are not trying to withhold anything from you, but we do not want to make promises we can not keep (even if that may happen now and then).

How we are working with Warlock at the moment:
We (Paradox Interactive) are continuing discussions with Ino-Co on how Warlock: Master of the Arcane, a game we believe in, can improve. There are however, no new content in the near future as we feel that the game in its current state is quite complete. The game will however continue to be patched, tweaking the game, as well as sorting out issues that we (you) discover.
The game is in no way dead or abandoned. If you experience problems or discover bugs, please keep reporting them and we will try to work them out. And please keep on providing feedback so that we and Ino-Co can continue to gather inspiration for how we want the game to be in the future!

Best Regards
BjornB

Quote from the "What's new for Warlock in 2013" thread.

Warlock is a much better game now than it was when it launched, so the review scores reflect that. Games almost never get re-reviewed.

On top of that, without a large community, it's hard for word of the changed game to spread. If it is good enough, word will get around, but only if it can also pull peoples attention away from the latest shiny new game, strategy or otherwise.

Hi all. I'm a newbie to Paradox games, and after getting a new laptop at xmas, I installed Steam and bought a couple of games. Liked the idea of Warlock, so that was one of the games I bought. Well, blow me, this game is awesome. ;) Have been playing every night, and have completed it twice already on relaxed mode - as I said, a newbie to this game, although I've played civ 3,4 & 5 lol Anyways, have decided to download the dlc's when I get paid, to enhance my experience. As well as increasing difficulty level. What I'd like to know is, should I be playing with all other worlds and mages, or should I restrict myself to say 2-3 of each?

I bet you will like the dlc's, especially Armageddon, which was extremely challenging and tough for me at first. As for worlds/mages, I like playing with max mages and worlds in Armageddon mode but with less mages in a regular game. Why? Because mages are helpful against the Dremer (hint, trading) and are fun to cooperate with. Without Dremer, having max mages is annoying and they never really get big enough to be of any challenge whatsoever. With less mages, they will have bigger empires, more units, and more challenge than when there are a lot of weak mages. I really enjoy clearing out worlds so I always play with max.

Thanks for that, yeah I'm finding it a bit easy, so I'm going to restart on a harder level, with more worlds, but with only 4 mages. See how I go. Any tips for troops/spells, I'm tending towards the healing spells first, but this random spell thing can be a pain lol. As for the buildings, smithy etc. Until I read the forums, I thought the upgrades were automatic - see a noob at this. Anyways, thanks again for the help.

Yeah, ripping of the Civ 5 interface was probably a bad idea. I mean on one hand you end up with a lot of people not buying it because it looks like a bad Civ ripoff, and on the other people buying it and getting mad that it's not. First couple months I remember a lot of people being mad about missing Civ features.

Civ ripped them off, not the other way around.

Do a little research unclean.....Ino-Co have been developing games using the hex-based tactical system in Warlock for years.....long before Civ5 pinched the idea.

The game heavily favors fewer powerful units over swarms of weak units so I usually do one of two things at the beginning of the game: 1) destroy buildings and go straight to advanced units like mages/trolls/vampires or 2) go for smithy/barracks/academy to get the upgraded units asap. I only produce tier 1 units if I absolutely have to but if you make too many, you will not be able to support more powerful units. Making just 2 trolls at the beginning of the game is definitely doable and absolutely worth it. Once you start trying out armageddon mode, you will probably be most successful by going for advanced caster units, especially vampires/mages. Warlocks (koatl village) also make great units and can stun like bowmasters but do much more damage. Once you find a holy grounds, start making divine units asap and forget the weak stuff. Focus your buffs on heroes/tier 3 units and they will make you unstoppable. My best advice is simply to try all units of every faction so you can learn what works and doesn't work. There is no reason to "power game" with Warlock or you will get bored really fast.

As for spells, try to get your research up right away because spells can make or break the game. I usually reserve my mana for casting buffs on key units and try to limit my casting at the beginning of the game. Many people say summoning spells are extremely overpowered and a cheap tactic, so I never summon unless I need to. Experiment with all 8 gods and learn the strengths/weaknesses of all their spells and units. That's what makes Warlock so fun and why I have so many damn hours played. Happy gaming man!

aimson, I was totally confused by your post. I totally agree with the text I have put in bold, above. But all the rest of your post seems to be quite the opposite of those statements.

Part of the fun of strategy games is figuring out the details, game mechanics, and best strategies. This often includes getting information from other people with game experience and reading strategy guides or watching let's plays. The other part is just discovering stuff on your own (and then perhaps looking for other ideas to refine your own). You asked specific strategy questions so I figured I'd give you my opinion; at the same time I offered the alternative opinion that you should just discover stuff on your own without worrying about getting advice so soon. Also, I just bought the game for my girlfriend and was already in the habit of dishing out detailed strategy advice. I sometimes get in those moods... haha.
