From the Logs of the Dasarian Enclave; Species Study: Shree’ka, Experimental Species XB-34-QA-5

EXPERIMENTAL GALAXY 3085b-24905.3

GALAXY TYPE: Four Arm Spiral, 1000 stars, multiple celestial bodies per star

KNOWN SPECIES: As of study commencement, 40 species have reached space travel. Multiple pre-space travel and pre-sentient species. Interestingly, many species reached Stellaris within 10 years of each other. However, 10 of these species are far more advanced than the others. A Study Branch of our own Species is in the galaxy, at the discretion of Emperor Galaxy Grants Knowledge and Power. As well, our "Fallen Empire" Rivals are also maintaining presence in this experimental galaxy, despite our many insistences that they leave.

PRIMARY STUDY SPECIES

The Shree’ka take to the skies today, to the stars beyond, to fulfill our destiny. The Great Liberator, Xo’cha, has chosen his Vessel. He has commanded us to find those in the galaxy who oppress others, and work to free the enslaved. We will seek them out, with Xo’cha to guide us, and we will break the chains, free our brethren, and welcome them among us. They many never follow Xo’cha, but that is acceptable, for that is not His will. Xo’cha cares not who believes in His Truth. He only cares that we destroy the Chains, wherever they may be. And He warns that we must be ever ready, for the Telka will return. He warns that we must be prepared to fight once more, and this time, to eliminate the Telka once and for all. We are ready. We will fight, and if necessary, we will wipe out the Enslavers so that their Evil will never taint the galaxy again.”

- Speech made to the first space flight; Xa, 11th Vessel of Xo’cha (2200.01.01 T.C)

THE SHREE’KAAN STELLAR SOVREIGNCY

Primary Species: Shree’ka (plural: Shree; adjective: Shree’kaan)

- A note on pronunciation: The symbol ‘ in Ses' (the primary language of the Shree’ka) represents a hard “k” sound, similar to a glottal click. This does not change the pronunciation of the species name overly from the spelling, but is more present in other words.

Species Class: Insectoid, Omnivore

- The Shree’ka evolved from small, eight-legged arachnid analogues. The eight segmented legs are radially positioned around the bottom of the Shree’kaan body, which is spherical and monopartite. Two of these legs are thinner, darker in color, non weight-bearing and end in a tri-lobed claw able to manipulate tools. Each Shree’ka has four small, multifaceted eyes clustered on the front of the body. Below these eyes is a maw that opens into a tripartite mouth, each jaw ending in a thin, extremely sharp fang. The top of the Shree’kaan body is covered in sensory antennae similar to those of Saturniid moths of Earth. These antennae are used for communication as well as to gather sensory information, and are very mobile.

Species Traits:

- Talented, Quick Learners

o Shree’kaan individuals are very intuitive. They are able to rapidly assess situations and glean knowledge or wisdom from almost any situation. While not naturally intelligent, they certainly seem so due to their uncanny ability to pick up on information at an almost alarming rate.

- Natural Leaders

o The Shree’kaan past lends itself to powerful leaders rising amongst the populous. Rather than quashing these individuals, the Shree’kaan instead embrace them, giving them prominent positions with society and freedom to apply whatever information they may have absorbed to the betterment of the species.

- Combative

o While a very merciful species historically, the entire Shree’kaan space mission is to cleanse the galaxy of slavers. The message they believe given to them by their god is that they may have to purge the galaxy of the slavers if they do not cooperate or if they resist to the loss of their slaves.

Homeworld: Seska’h (Arid)

- Much of Seska’haan life is centered around deep canyons and rifts in the surface, which seem to have been made when a large asteroid impacted the planet before any major sentient life evolved. These deep canyons are networked by deep, well ventilated caves, which house the majority of water upon the planet. Underground river systems are well guarded resources, and it is around these cavern waterways that the main Shree’kaan cities are clustered.

Governing Ethics: Spiritualist, Individualist

- Much of the Shree’kaan nation follow the teachings of Xo’cha. Xo’cha was the Shree’ka who led the race to freedom, and the religion is young, but strong. The species believes that their elected leaders become the vessels for Xo’cha, and take their word as the will of their god. The past slavery of the Shree’kaan is the main reason for the strong individualist movements within the general population, but this is amplified by the vast differences between Shree’kaan individuals. Each Shree’ka is shaped by what it learns, so the species varies wildly in mindset, belief, and personality.

Government Type: Indirect Democracy

- Each Shree’ka petitions for the honor of being the Vessel for Xo’cha. The entire society votes upon who should be the next Vessel, and that Vessel rules the society for a surprisingly short period of time. We believe this is because they do not wish any individual to have too much influence over the nation. It could also be assumed that being the Vessel for Xo’cha is extremely tiring and strenuous upon those elected.

Spaceflight Achieved: 2200 T.C. (Telkan Calendar); 152 P.C. (Post Coming of Xo’cha); Experimental Date 50104.00

- Note: Further dates will be posted in T.C. chronology, as it is the most metrically aligned of the dates, and thus easiest to catalogue.

Species History

Evolving in the small tunnels of Seska’h, the Shree’ka fed of whatever sustenance they could find. They were a quick witted, nimble race that learned of new sources of food quickly, able to memorize the path back to new feeding grounds after simply stumbling upon them. At first, the Shree’ka were organized like a simple colony or hive, but without the dominating hive mind or caste system common among insectoid hives. Instead, Shree’ka all had the role of explorer and forager – they would reconvene in the tribe center to share routes to food and deliberate upon the best source for the current time. While sentient, the Shree’ka did not advance technologically, and remained relatively unchanged and primitive for many years.

Roughly 1200 years before the Coming of Xo’cha (approximately 800-900 T.C.), the Telkan (see Experimental Galaxy 3085b-24905.3, Primary Species Study Telkan), a much larger, more technologically advanced insectoid species also residing on Seska’h captured multiple Shree’kaan scouts. Using the naïve nature of the Shree’ka, and the photographic memory of the tunnel networks, the Telkan rounded up every remaining Shree’ka within a few short decades. The Telkan were cruel masters, forcing the Shree’ka to perform grueling slave labor on fungal farms and mineral mining expeditions. They treated their smaller cousins as non-sentient animals, and used them for entertainment and livestock purposes as well as for manual labor.

This continued for approximately a millennia until one individual, the infamous Xo’cha began to lead a resistance. The Telkan were larger, and stronger, but the Shree’ka were many. They could hide in places that their captors could not fit, and could use their memories to lead the Telkan deep into the cavern’s network systems. Guerilla tactics and carefully planned skirmishes, all planned by the indomitable Xo’cha, eventually led to the overthrow of Telkan rule.

The Telkan people had developed a rudimentary form of hyperlane space travel by this point in time, and the Shree’ka, rather than eliminating their enemies through mass genocide, instead banished them from the planet. The Telkan took up residence in a different part of the galaxy (more on them in aforementioned study), and the Shree’ka were left with the remnants of the Telkan civilization. When Xo’cha died, the newly elected leader of the Telkan people claimed that the spirit of Xo’cha had possessed his body, and that he was now speaking in Xo'cha's own voice. A religion sprang up around this prophet, and now each newly elected leader is assumed to be the Vessel of Xo’cha. While his word is not absolute, the entire population looks to this leader for guidance as they once did Xo’cha.

The Shree’kaan people used their adaptability and quick wits to efficiently pick up the pieces of the fallen civilization, and within approximately 100 years, had rebuilt and improved upon Telkan FTL engines. The current Vessel of Xo’cha gave them their spaceflight mission: to seek out all oppression and slavery in the galaxy and end it.

This is a heavily modded AAR, told from the point of view of one of the Fallen Empires, the Dasarian Enclave. I'll be posting the actual gameplay bits soon, just wanted to set up the action!

ERA 1: SPACEFLIGHT ACHIEVED: THE FIRST YEAR: 2200.01-01 – 2201.01.01

Current Leader: Xa, 11th Vessel of Xo’cha (Age: 26)

The fleet leaving Seska’h was a small one, consisting of an Ada-class constructor vessel propelled by early chemical thrusters and equipped with a basic hyperdrive, named the Klis’tar; an Eelix-class science vessel outfitted much the same way but also outfitted with basic scanners and a research station, named the Brusha’ and commanded by the Scientist Sel; and three Lakee-class corvettes, the Kris, Ses’, and Eesa. These corvettes were equipped with basic mass driver cannons, scavenged from the weapons used by the Telkan Kingdom during the planetary wars. Ever cautious, Xa ordered Sel to practice space navigation and using her scanners upon the celestial bodies of their home system, Klis’talah, while sending the more armored corvettes to test the hyperlane jumps. She also commanded construction of a new science vessel, and recruited scientist Xaha to man it. During this time, Xa was petitioned for research alternatives by her three planetary scientists. While her physics scientist Eerek wished to study Quantum Theory to further increase his efficiency in the future, Xa overruled him, demanding he focus first on energy credits, eventually picking Global Energy Management. Akeer, her biosocial specialist, she assigned to New Worlds Protocol, optimistic that her first expeditions would find colonisable planets nearby. Finally, Saateeg, her Chief Engineer, had watched this assignment passively and simply waved his antennae in agreement when she instructed him to research Mining Propagation. Construction was ordered for a Hydroponics Farm upon the surface of Seska’h, preparing to support the growing population that would be needed to colonize future planets. While all of this may seem trivial, it is important to document the leader’s decisions upon the first day of space travel, as often these decisions will make or break a fledging space nation.

It is also important to note at this time the position of the Klis’talah star within the galaxy. Located approximately in the middle of the fourth arm, Klis’talah is on the coreward side of the Dark Hopes Nebula. While not in the nebula itself, any exploration armward will be hampered by this Nebula and it will be interesting to see how the species reacts to the hindering effects.

Only two stars were within reach of the primitive hyperdrive of the Shree’ka – Namenelja and Lorsamtanrisem. One corvette each jumped out of Klis’talah’s gravity well, leaving one corvette behind to act as backup if any sort of trouble arrived. Both exploratory corvettes achieved the jump within one month, and finding no opposition, continued their explorations, calling the third corvette in to help explore the branching hyperlanes. Excitement rippled throughout the Shree’kaan nation. They could barely wait for the science ship to finish constructing so that they could begin surveying the closest star. Xa had agreed that by the time it was finished, enough would be known about the surveying protocol and surrounding area that it would be safe to send Xaha out with the new ship, the Talah.

It was when the Kris entered the Camua system that the Shree’ka first encountered alien life. They were barely able to catch a glimpse of the creature before it warped out of the gravity well, but that glimpse was enough to record its trail signature on their sensors. Excitement flashed through the homeworld, and Akeer was instantly pulled off of duty to begin analyzing the sensor logs to discover what sort of creature this was.

In the third month of space flight, the Talah was completed, and Xaha set out to the Namenelja system to begin surveying. Of the two closest stars, Namenelja’s basic scanner data showed the presence of an Arid planet. Xa was both excited and nervous of this discovery, as another arid system this close could be either a blessing or a great curse – it was possible that the Telkan Kingdom had only fled to the next system. Xaha was ordered to proceed under extreme caution.

Before Xaha could leave though, news came back from the Kris once more, from the Geshtthkiecche system. A secondary life form had been discovered, and this time they were staying put. They were large, however, seemingly organic and the size (if not bigger) than the Kris itself, so the ship only stayed long enough to collect sensory data to forward back to Akeer, and then continued its exploration. By this point, Seska’h was buzzing with excitement over these discoveries – two alien life-forms, and the possibility of either a colonisable planet or the discovery of their greatest foes, all within a few short months of achieving spaceflight!

Amidst the excitement came news from Eesa in Ilan Bulerver. Ships or vessels had been found, sending off soft pings. These transmissions were sent back once more, and Akeer found himself swamped under mountains of sensor data. These mountains were only added to when yet another race jumped into the gravity well of Klis’talah itself! These large organics seemed very passive, however, and swiftly left the gravity well once more. Xa and Akeer were baffled. They had no idea there would be this much life swarming so near to their home. The Kris once more added to the confusion when finding more life in the Nakila system. Growing nervous, Xa ordered the construction of further corvettes, and set about to find an admiral to lead a defensive fleet. It was this overwhelming beginning that would start Xa's spiral into paranoia and mild forms of insanity.

On 2200.08.14 Akeer finished his first study. The original species encountered was in fact, the interstellar heralds dubbed “Void Clouds” by the Shree’ka. As a spiritual species, it was evident to the Shree’ka that these beings must be studied. They were shown to be hostile, and Xa warned her fleets to avoid them until Eerek could complete an analysis. Meanwhile, the Ses’, within the Vurul system, sent back more fleeting reports of another stellar object that quickly warped away the moment they were spotted. Akeer longed to get back at his colonization research, but Xa stubbornly insisted that colonization could wait – they needed to know who they were sharing the universe with first. Akeer reluctantly agreed, but asked Xa to task the science vessels to at the very least focus their efforts on finding habitable worlds, so that once he did finish his colonization research, they could take full advantage. Xa agreed. The scientists began to share their misgivings about their leader with one another - although the Vessel of Xo'cha often made decisions for the betterment of the entire race, it was not very often that a Vessel overruled the individuality of any one Shree'ka outright. Often, they were guiding voices, those who listened to options put forth from the individual leaders of the nation, and giving advice, and possible alternatives, but always it was down to the original proposer's decision. For Xa to be ordering her scientists about like this reminded them of their former masters. Resentment began to build, not one year into spaceflight.
On 2200.09.22, Akeer catalogued the second spacefaring creature. He had originally nicknamed the creatures Space Amoebae (interesting how almost all species seem to give this creature this name), and the name, unfortunately, stuck. He was immensely interested in these Amoebae, and gave himself the additional project to study them. Xa was combative about this at first, but Akeer assured her that by studying the creatures from a distance, they risked losing none of their fleet, while at the same time they may be able to learn something from the creatures.

It was less than two weeks later, on 2200.10.09, that Akeer, using his species remarkable capacity to improve quickly at any set task, finished his report on the Ilan Bulerver vessels. They were, he stated, ancient, deep-space mining drones. This time, Xa instantly ordered that the Shree’ka dismantle the drones, attempting to use their technology to advance their own efforts. Akeer used this distraction to slip his second report in – the peaceful creatures that had jumped into their own space were in fact the Tiyanki. The spiritual society of the Shree’ka appreciated such peaceful creatures, and vowed to protect them as divine innocents.

By this point, Xa was growing even more anxious. Her exploratory corvettes were reporting that seemingly the majority of systems contained one of the aforementioned species, and most were hostile. Not only that, but one jump away from the Vurul system, an obvious space station was found orbiting a populated world. The fleets surrounding this world were of similar makeup to the scanner data from the fleeting vessel on Vurul, and Xa knew it would only be a matter of time before communications were established. She ordered the Ses’ return to Klis’talah, and kept a weary eye on her other explorers. Despite this wariness of the leader, the populace was happy. Eerek’s report on the “Void Clouds” revealed what we already knew – that they were heralds of the galaxy, ancient creatures who oversee our experiments with cold eyes. Even we do not understand their enigmatic ways. The Shree’ka were overjoyed to find such spiritual creatures, and overall mood increased upon Seska’h. Xa ordered that the Heralds were to be respected, but did not forbid her fleets from defending themselves against hostile approach.

On 2200.12.28, almost a full year after reaching space, the survey of Klis’talah was finally completed. At the same time, Akeer released his report on the Space Amoeba – they were neutral beings, would defend themselves if attacked. His studies on the movement of the creatures were incorporated into the fleet, adding evasive maneuvers to all training. Klis’talah was found to be incredibly mineral rich, the asteroids surrounding the star containing enough minerals to help jumpstart the Shree’kaan economy. In addition, one of the two planetary bodies, Xaad, was found to be somewhat habitable – a desert class planet. Excited, Xa declared to all that this would be the first colony established within the Shree’kaan Stellar Sovereignty – one close to home, one easily defendable, and most importantly, safe. Excitement reigned on the homeworld and on the eve of 2201, the entire planet rejoiced in a celebration of a successful first exploratory year into space. They celebrated new horizons, they celebrated new opportunities, but they also celebrated the fact that nowhere nearby seemed to be lurking the horrible, evil Telkan overlords that they so feared would one day return.
